Remove Unknown Z-Wave Device

Same same here… It’s time to look for alternatives for ST

I’m up to 24 “UNKNOWN DEVICES”. System is sometimes very slow to respond to device triggers.

Time was 5:00 PM EST on 12/9/2023. Dumped Hub Logs.

Hello everyone, some updates

  1. The issue has been identified
  2. It will be solved in a new mobile update (It’s dependent on the engineering team)

It appears to be an issue related to the SmartThings App (Android). If anyone has a similar problem with iOS, please let me know

Well, finding this post is a little frustrating. I posted this same issue 28 days ago. I’ve since purchased a new hub and have begun migrating devices since there was no resolution. This after trying to exclude and re-include a bunch of my ZWave devices. At least after moving some of the devices to a new hub they’ve stayed online.

Not to pile on, but I too am having the same issue as above, just one Unknown device. I have a Hub on the 3rd floor, a Zwave Outlet Switch on the 2nd floor and a Schlage Lock on the first floor, all directly above one another about 10 feet apart. For years I went with just the Hub (3rd Floor) and the lock (1st Floor) but would have intermittent issues with the device going “Offline” and then reconnecting a few days later. Someone on a Reddit Forum said to put some other Zwave device inbetween as it will create a mesh network and stop the “Offline” issues that I would get once every few months. It’s an issue because this is a Vacation Rental that I need to constantly change the lock codes for and lose my mind if the Lock is Offline

Don’t want to send anyone down a bad path, just wanted to get more information out there. I did have a failed pairing with a Zwave Outlet Switch (user error). A week later I was able to pair a different Z-Wave Outlet switch successfully and eventually paired the original one with another Smartthings Hub successfully. Wondering if that failed pairing could have caused this. Happy to send Logs to someone if needed.

I am using an Android device if that helps. Would Z-Wave Repair from the Advanced Web App be a better idea?

It probably would be a good idea to resolve the unknown device. If it was “left over” from a previous attempt–in other words, if it is a fourth device (I assume all three devices you mentioned are presently paired successfully)–you can force delete it. Either the app or my.smartthings.com can do that. I think it’s easier from the web than the app.

Either should do the same thing. The app (at least the iOS app I am using) shows nice status messages indicating the start/completion (or failure) of the Z-Wave Repair. It is often thought a good idea to do a repair following addition/removal of a device to assure the network routing is cleaned up.

I only have 2 devices, a lock and an outlet. I failed at pairing a different outlet. Unfortunately I don’t see any unknown/leftover devices in the app or on my.smartthings.com

So, one of the two devices (sorry I mis-counted!) is Unknown? If that’s the case, the problem is the same: resolve the Unknown device and then repair the network.

Hope I’m understanding your issue correctly–if not, my apologies!

That is the issue for me, I can’t figure out where the Unknown Device is coming from. This is what I see in the App:

and this is what I see when I do a Z-Wave repair:

Just not sure where to look to remove the Unknown Device.

I’ve been noticing slow response on Z-wave devices for a few days. It might have started with the upgrade to 51.02 but I’m not really sure.

Anyway, I did a Z-wave repair from the app and got two Unknown Device errors.

Hub V2 51.02 firmware, fewer than 30 Z-wave devices, all mains powered, no devices added or removed in probably a year. Nothing missing and no extra devices showing in the app or advanced web UI.

It would be helpful if there was more info in the error message. As I recall in the old Groovy IDE days we got the network ID in repair error messages.

Going to reboot the hub from the advanced web UI and will try another repair in a couple of hours.

When I moved all of my 30 Zwave devices to a second freshly factory reset V3 hub and ran Zwave repair it showed Unknown Device errors. I think that there is a problem in the firmware and these are phantom messages instead of phantom devices.

Certainly possible.

I went thru some really annoying z-wave issues about 3 years ago. Very slow response and a significant number of lost commands. I only “solved” the issues by replacing about 30% of my z-wave switches with Zigbee.

I’m seeing slow response on Z-wave devices again. For example I have a Scene that turns off lights in the kitchen. It affects a mix of Zigbee and Z-wave switches. When I trigger it using the app or Alexa, the Zigbee switches react instantly but it takes a few seconds for the Z-wave ones.

So there’s something going on with my mesh beyond incorrect error messages. Unfortunately there’s no way to get useful info about the mesh using SmartThings.

Update: some combination of time passing, multiple z-wave repairs, and a hub reboot later and I’m getting a clean run of the repair and good mesh performance.

I’m really hoping they will eventually provide a mesh map like in the old ide. I have my doubts about this actually happening though with the Station having no Zwave. I was thinking about trying to find a better Zwave hub that would integrate with ST for Zwave.

The route information that the old IDE provided was only showing the route that some specific message took. Would be nicer if they provided a topology map like the Silicon Labs tool

Based on my experience with Zooz devices I’d expect their Zbox z-wave hub to be a good device. But, to my knowledge, it can’t be connected to SmartThings. And if it can it would be a cloud-to-cloud link. :disappointed:

Yesterday I took my spare V3 hub that was left over from my hub replace test Here. I factory reset it again to make sure it was completely wiped. I added it back to my setup and didn’t add any devices. I ran a Zwave repair and guess what, a Unknown Device error! Really, with no devices on a freshly factory reset hub!

This proves my theory that these are phantom messages and not any thing else. This is a problem with the firmware. It could be that Zwave repair may not be working at all. Now when I tried it again today, it ran quickly and no error messages.

Where are we with this issue? This is a core functionality of the hub! This needs to be fixed asap.
this thread was started on 8/1/2023 and its still a problem.

@mlchelp The problem was identified some time ago, and the corresponding team is working on it, unfortunately, we do not have an expected date for it.

Thank you.

A post was split to a new topic: All my zwave door locks are offline

Bummer. Still no fix
