Thanks WB70. This feels like doing a BIOS update… It should go OK, but if it doesn’t a world of pain awaits!
I think waiting on some brave user feedback before pushing the button is the best move in this case!
There may be some kinks experienced, but I know that loss of SmartApps, devices, Routines etc weren’t of any major concern for the beta testers. You can see the list of bugs we did experience which were somewhat minor, although an inconvenience at the time.
Will there be a push notification to let us know, as well as the prompt in the app? I get in the app every day or two, but sometimes it can be a few days between times that the app is open.
We had a banner page show up in the Samsung Classic app (Account Migration Beta testers). Initially you can choose to ignore it when it appears as one of the ST staff members stated earlier.
There is not a push notification, at least initially, but the migration isn’t super time-sensitive so if you don’t migrate for a few days after the banner appears, that’s ok.
Brad, I want to include you in this post I addressed to Vlad because I think it is of the utmost importance that there be a set of procedures post migration. There was some manual intervention that we had to do after migrating over and if there isn’t a documented procedure for those items, it’s going to be an even bigger nightmare, especially for Support:
I know that @slagle said some of these things were addressed during the latter rounds of the Account Migration Beta, but if people don’t know that they need to manually add, change, or adjust specific things, this migration will spin out of control. Just trying to help circumvent a nightmare and help streamline things a little better.
For the procedures, create an Announcement in Announcements, a post migration email that gets sent after they go through migration (If it’s possible) and an FAQ of what a person should check for after they migrate.
So, no need to set up rooms/devices/etc in the Google app and/or IFTTT once the account is migrated from Smartthings to Samsung?
With GITHUB, did you have to go and set up all the smart apps again? Or did the settings retain once you re-linked GITHUB?
Just asking so I have an idea how much time I need to set aside for this. Not complaining, just trying to get a handle on the scope.
I was in the first round of the beta migration. They had a couple more after so things might have changed since. For myself, I did not have any issues with my Alexa and google accounts. They continued working after the migration. But I did see some who had to reauthenticate.
In regards to github, I lost all my github settings but all my SmartApps and device handlers were fine. I did not have to reauthenticate my github account but some users did. I just needed to re-add the github repositories and link them back to the apps/dths, so I would definitely recommend taking a screenshot of your repository links under settings before migrating to make it easier in case they are lost.
I believe there was only one service that I needed to reauthenticate in order to get it working again but overall, it was not much of an issue for me, other than needing to relink the GitHub repositories.
One last question, did you lose any existing custom DTH’s or smart apps? I have all mine copied to text files as a back up, but am hoping those migrate on over.
All my custom apps and dth s were fine.
As jkp eluded to. The worst case scenario that you will deal with:
You will not lose any Devices, DHs, SmartApps, Routines or anything else.
NOTE: I say worst case in that if any of those same issues still exist and weren’t addressed as part of the 3 rounds of beta testing, then these would be the items that you may have to address manually post migration. It was stated though by Tim Slagle that they identified and addressed the GitHub piece. If you had to do all of this, it’s an hour or so worth of time to modify.
What happens if you almost never use the app?
I have my house super automated (and a lot of z-wave switches for light overrides, and we use voice a ton as well) so I only ever open the app to add a new device or add/change an automation. How long can the banner be there before a it is a problem? I think it is odd they are using the app for the migration notification and not email.
This is how it was done in the Account Migration Beta through the Banner as they have to initiate everyone’s email account for the migration to be able to be executed.
You can postpone for a while as the ST staff said yesterday, but at some point you are going to have to cutover to creating the new account. You are better off doing it now or when it starts than waiting so that if any issues arise, you can get things fixed quicker.
Post migration you will still use the same Classic App. You will not cutover to the new app until it is ready and that’s a ways off (months).
Yeah, I don’t plan on using the new SmartThings until they pry the old one out of my cold dead hands (well the day it stops working because they are forcing you over.)
I only use the app every other month or so and since summer doesn’t have many decorating holidays I probably could go all summer without touching it.
With that is there any concerns if that banner sits there for a month or two?
The next time I would even think about having to log in again is when I get a new phone in the fall.
I doubt they will let you postpone it for a couple of months.
I don’t recommend it. The lesser of the two evils is to do it when it is ready and if any issues arise at all, you will be able to get things resolved that much quicker rather than waiting until last minute.
Although we experienced some issues during beta testing, it was pretty painless, other than the fact that we didn’t have any notice about the nuances that needed to be corrected so that was frustrating for us. You guys are all being given a list of things to check for after you migrate so it won’t take much time at all.
Your devices and automations won’t be affected at all. That was the least of the problems experienced.
You can put it off for as long as you want, but it’s not going to help you much as creating the Samsung account and moving everything from ST to that new account is required in moving forward. Something I would get out of the way now, and if you do it now, they will be more prepared to take these issues on to get things corrected quicker versus waiting until the last minute. Your choice of course
Everyone should read the faqs and step by step guide in the following thread…
I got the email a couple of days ago, but no banner on SmartThings to migrate the account. How long does it take for the banner to show up after the email?
They haven’t begun this process yet.
When they do, they are going to be doing it in small batches, not everyone at once.
When you see the banner, then you will know.
