Older v2 hub was offline (unplugged) for a long time, now it won't do much of anything!

Finally got around to start re-using an old v2 hub that I had been using a few years ago (that has been sitting disconnected for quite a while). Initially, it connected and showed-up as active/connected in my phone app and under my account in the my.smartthings.com (advanced) website, but from being offline for so long, it was way back on firmware v.000.034.00011.

I removed devices that the app still thought were connected to the hub, but the firmware never updated, even leaving it alone overnight. Tried multiple power-cycles of the hub (without batteries) then moved to soft-resets (holding in the reset button and plugging-in power until the light starts to fast-flash yellow), then attempts at full resets (holding-in the reset for over 30 seconds after plugging-in the power cable until light goes solid yellow) and pretty much everything else I can think of. Once or twice after trying something, I’d start to get the flashing purple, but the update never seemed to “take”, and the app and website continued to show the old firmware version. After one of the full factory reset cycles, the hub removed itself from the phone app and website, and I was able to onboard it again, but nothing else happened and I didn’t get any flashing purple afterwards. I’ve also attempted to try the port 123 UDP block in one of the routers I use, but I don’t think I ever got the light to turn green afterwards, and on the website, the fields for the local IP address and MAC went blank, so I undid the port blocking and it still won’t turn green (I get flashing blue, then solid blue, and an IP scan of my LAN devices does show the hub.) Have also tried putting in manual DNS addresses in the router (8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4) and further attempts to do full resets and restarts (including restarts of the router), but now no matter where or how I connect it, I can never get it to connect and turn green (always flashing then solid blue after any restart/power-cycle). I even have it connected on the same network and same router and everything as a working v2 hub that does connect and give me a solid green light, so it isn’t (or sure shouldn’t be) a networking/Internet problem.

What else can be done at this point to try to get this hub to connect again (resolve the solid blue light) and then get the firmware updated? Thanks in advance for the assistance!

I think you will need to raise a support ticket with Samsung/SmartThings or tag one of the SmartThings people on this forum. They are very helpful.
I did a search for 34.11 on this forum and found only a mention of a beta release: Release Date: 18 December 2020.
This was back in the Groovy days, pre Edge.
Good luck.

UPDATE: I see that 34.11 was released (not in beta) in Dec 2020 after a problem was found with 34.09

Start by following the troubleshooting guide in the following thread. That thread also applies to V2 hubs in some instances. https://community.smartthings.com/t/troubleshooting-smartthings-hub-2018-and-aeotec-hub/298332

Hi @jwilsonjr

Could you please share the Hub logs with us by following the steps below?

  1. Insert Fat32-formatted USB drive to the USB slot on the back of the hub.
  2. Press and release the reset hole on the back of the hub.
  3. Hub LED will blink magenta while copying logs.
  4. After the Hub LED returns to normal from magenta blinking, extract the USB drive and connect it to a PC.
  5. File name will be “logdump_xxxx.tgz.enc”
  6. Leave a comment in this thread and we’ll send you a direct message (DM).
  7. Then send the package via direct message (DM) to our SmartThings support team.

OK, having the expired certificate problem makes some sense, because the hub was offline for such a long time. Connected the hub back to my Asus router that would allow me to follow the instructions to block UDP port 123, and tried another factory reset. After releasing the reset button, the light went to solid purple and did nothing else. I also noticed that it didn’t seem to bring up the Ethernet interface, since the lights at the port didn’t light-up. Tried a power-cycle of the hub, and it starts off with a red light for a fraction of a second, then goes to a blinking blue light, then a solid blue light for a moment and then flashing purple (as expected, as if it’s trying to download the firmware) then back to solid blue for a moment, then red, then blinking blue (as if it restarted itself) however the flashing purple was not for very long (less than a minute, I think) so I’m not really sure that it got updated. Now it does actually turn green for a moment or so, but then goes back to solid blue for a moment and repeats (solid green for a moment, then solid blue for a moment).

Does the Advanced Web App still show firmware 34.x on the hub or has that changed?

Took a while to find an older USB drive that I could format to FAT-32, however, I’ve tried inserting it into both USB slots on the back and pressing the reset button, and nothing seems to happen. The light on the front doesn’t change color, and when I connect the flash drive back to the PC, it is empty. Do I have to unplug the power and have the reset button pressed while reconnecting power (like what they call a soft reset) with the USB drive attached or something?

I haven’t tried to reclaim (or re-onboard) the hub yet. Have been trying to get the logs onto a USB drive as requested by the other person who responded. It’s weird. It now seems to be in something like a “boot loop” where it will have the light go white for a second, then red for a second, then flash blue, then solid blue, then green for a brief second, and repeats, starting with the brief second of white, then red, etc.

Weird. I finally got the hub to get to a solid green somehow, so I removed the UDP port block from the router and did the re-onboarding process from the phone app. But the Info panel from the phone app and the web interface still show the old 34.x firmware version (although on the website, it has filled-in the MAC address and local IP address fields that had gone blank back when it wouldn’t turn green at all). But, hey, at least SOME progress, since I’m back to having a solid green light again (for the moment).

OK, seems that the hub didn’t like the first flash drive I used, because the process worked with a different flash drive. I have the log file and can upload it as soon as you have time available to send me a DM. Thanks!
