How to populate the "Dashboard" section

This! At first the dashboard seemed redundant but know I see it’s the only way to have a quick glance at the status of everything!

Maybe a UI enhancement could make this sort of thing easier…

What if at the top of each “room” screen, just to the left of the three dot menu, there was a right facing arrow for “next room”. You could use this to more quickly cycle through each room in the location, rather than needing to go up and down the hierarchy. For the last room on the list, this arrow should take you back to the first room on the list (i.e. the list wraps around).

Still requires a lot of clicking around - Would rather have a single high level overview like dashboard

This discussion would be pointless if there was a widget that would show you the home state, which doors are unlocked and which lights are on.

The software is clearly unfinished, released prematurely for whatever reason, so I assume they have more plans for the dashboard then just SHM. If they didn’t, devoting an entire screen to it would be the dumbest UI blunder ever made. This is another level of SmartApp, and I am reasonably certain we will see more. I just hope it is sooner rather than later.

I’m not sure I would call it prematurely released. I look it as a v1 product. (Yes, I know it’s actually v2) You can definitely see some placeholders for future expansion.

Also, they adhered to the best rule about developing software - “just ship it.” It might be 80-90% done. Get it out there and get feedback.

There are too many obvious bugs for this not to be premature. If there was no deadline, why not take another week or two and fix them, and then there is the migration path they promised which is months away.

Couldn’t help noticing it was released in time for IFA.

You mean, something that opened really quickly on all sort of platforms and showed you the state of all those devices on a single page…something like SmartTiles…yes, if only somebody would write something like SmartTiles

Something like pushbullet - tasker - minimalistic widget, which I killed yesterday because I am tired of doing the maintenance work. But yes, like SmartTiles

Just to understand, I currently have “Lights and Switches” and “Home & Family”. There is no way to add Motion to that, right?
I know if I remove them all I can’t get them back and I can add to the ones that are currently there but what if I want to add a new one.

Thanks,
Scott

Exactly and that’s my biggest problem now because i can’t see my lights on the dashboard so i need to check all my devices to see if one is turn on …

Can’t add new ones at the present time.

I get the loss of v1 artifacts.
I do not get a new setup without SHM…
My openings screen just says, “You don’t have any solutions yet”
How did that happen in a clean install?
How do I at least get SHM?
How do I default to a more useful page?

That IS what happens in a clean install.

Ask support to push it to you, or just wait and hope it shows up.

You don’t (currently).

Best, clearest response to anything I’ve seen

I truly hope I’m misunderstanding all of this because if not, the v2 hub/app is a huge downgrade. Am I to understand that there’s no longer a way to setup “Doors & Locks”, or “Lights and Switches” on the Dashboard? Currently I only have this Smart Home Monitor which seems of little use to me. Other than that my Dashboard is blank after deleting everything per the v2 hub migration instructions.

Furthermore, how do I configure a Garage Door in the new App/Hub. Previously I would setup a door as a type “Garage Door” then pick a tilt sensor and a relay switch. I could then quickly see the state of my garage door, and open/close it. Please tell me this functionality isn’t gone. I am (was?) a huge fan of SmartThings so I hope I’m just overlooking it.

This is correct. Once you have deleted the shortcut groups, they are gone, and you cannot get them back. At least at present, do write to support@smartthings.com and ask the same questions and we can hope they might restore this functionality at some point.

As far as setting up lights, there is a nice new smart app called smart lights which has a lot of features in it although not all of the features that were in the previous shortcut groups. It’s definitely worth taking a look at. But it still won’t show up on the dashboard.

One) tap on asterisk the in the lower right to go to the marketplace

  1. choose smart apps

Three) choose “smart things recommends”

Four) choose smart lights, install it, and you will see the options that it offers.

Thanks for your response. I’ve done the best I can so far with the “Smart Lights” system. I’m not 100% happy with it though. I’ve emailed support and given them my feedback.

Bottom line, it just isn’t as clean as the old solution was. I now need multiple rules to accomplish the same thing as before because you can only select one type of input. (e.g. Motion OR Door open/close). Previously you could create a “Light” comprised of one or more lights, and have it respond to multiple types of input.

Also, I have no idea what rules take precedence when two rules conflict. For example, if one rule says turn the lights off after a door is closed for 5 minutes, and another turns that same group on when there is motion, are they going to inexplicably go out on me after 5 minutes even though I’m moving around? The second rule needs to cancel out the first. Without there being some innate relationship between the two rules I’m not sure how they could reliably accomplish this.

Hopefully things will get better in the coming weeks. If not, I may be in the market for a new solution.

This is just absurb. Nevermind having to manually remove every single smartapp, configuration, device, etc. from the old setup when going from v1 to v2, but after doing all that, spending a good 5-6 hourse removing and getting everything re-added, I’m met with “Oh yea, and your dashboard is gone”??? ARE YOU KIDDING ME?

This is ridiculous. I would have NEVER done that had I know this was outcome. This is just a horrible and useless app to me now. I used to be able to open up to my dashboard and see exactly the information I needed. 5 out of 6 doors locked, oh ok, click, yup this one is unlocked, lock it. Some lights are on, click, see them, done. Now what? I need to either manually go into the “Things” section and look through every item individually, or, as I was told by support, create a “room” which would really be a “door” or a “light switch” or something else, then manually and individually click on every single “room” to see the status of every “door”. Are you kidding me? I can physically walk around my house and do that faster than clicking through this crap. Why am I being forced to use crappy workarounds for functionality that I used to have that was sneakily ripped away from me.

I have already emailed support for a pre-paid RMA label to send this v2 hub back. v1 hub will apparently go into the trash because that’s useless now, and I will have to find another solution like Vera Edge or something. This is crazy. And if their claim that “something else will be coming to replace the old dashboard” is true, then you leave the old damn functionality in place until the new one is ready. You don’t ruin everyone’s experience and just say "yea we might make it better in the future, but for now here’s 10% of what you used to be able to do. They have completely wasted the dashboard screen and honestly, it shouldn’t even be called a dashboard. A dashboard should show an overview of the whole system. This shows me a green dot - gee thanks. Maybe car dashboards should follow suit. You don’t need to know your speed or gas levels or anything. Here’s a checkmark.

This is crap

Seriously ST–just add a “blank tab” in the App … let us name it whatever we want (i.e. REAL DASHBOARD) and then allow us to add shortcuts to any of our “THINGS…”

WE NEED A DASHBOARD!!! This wasn’t a “minor oversight…” it’s like not seeing the Grand Canyon.
