How to add additional Hue bulb?

In order to add newly added hue bulbs that are connected to the Hue hub directly you need to go into the Hue (Connect) smartapp and select the new bulb under ‘Select Hue Bulbs’. If you just added the bulb to Hue then it should take a few seconds for SmartThings to scan and see the new bulb.

I had to go through this mess a couple weeks ago, and the information I got from support was two-fold:

  1. They were having issues adding bulbs to existing setups (well noted here, I feel your pain)
  2. (haven’t seen this in the thread yet) Hue Lux wasn’t OFFICIALLY supported (the new bulb I was trying to add), and they can only be pulled in on the FIRST Hue Connect sync.

The only resolve they could give me due to my Lux situation was to completely rip out Connect & all the bulbs and start over (ugghh). The only upside to starting over was using the smart lights app instead of some of the custom ones. I only wish it could replicate the “Brighten Dark Places” app functionality for low light level with motion.

Smartthings please fix this Hue debacle, it’s a real PITA for dealing with a standalone solid platform.

I haven’t seen anything like a Hue (Connect) Smart App. I’ve just received new bulbs, and now I can’t add them to ST.

Do I really have to rip out the bridge and start over? That’s more than just a pain, it’s absurd.

There is a hue connect SmartApp. If this is your first time adding a hue bridge/bulb, start with Adding a hue bulb from connect new devices… It will identify your bridge, ask you to press the button on the bridge and start discovering your bulbs And hue connect will appear in your SmartApps listing.

If you are adding new bulbs later:

This is how I would go… Forget ST. First add it to the hue bridge and confirm that it was added using the hue native app.

Then in ST app, open Hue connect from SmartApp section. It should start discovering your bulbs (I am assuming that you already have hues connected to ST land via Hue bridge). Give it some time and then open the bulbs section and check the new bulbs if found.

That’s just it - it won’t discover the bridge again. It found it the first time I installed the set of bulbs I had, but now it won’t find the bridge so I can add new lights. I tried pushing the Philips hub connect button, but nothing.

Sorry, should have replied to you directly, Ron.

The problem is, the app won’t find the bridge again. It found it the first time I added the bridge and the first set of lights, and it shows in my Things, but it won’t find it now, so I can add lights.

Do I have to uninstall the Bridge first? Will that uninstall the lights?

Is it possible that your IP has changed with router reboot? I use DHCP reservation so that IP doesn’t change with reboot of the router.

No, that’s not it. It lists the Bridge in the Things, so it can “see” the Bridge. But it won’t list it when I try to add new bulbs. And I haven’t re-booted the router, so that shouldn’t be an issue.

Do you see the hue connect though? In fact I am about to add a Lightstrip plus in a few hrs and see how that goes.

Well, don’t I feel sheepish. :flushed:

I was trying to connect via the traditional approach, of going in through the what must have been the direct ST connect, rather than through Hue Connect.

My bad. All is good.

Thank you for your patience and help.

Basically took me five minutes to hook up the new Lighstrip Plus to Hue bridge 2 and ST. Hue integration is now probably the most solid integration in its current state.

It’s pretty much the only integration in its current state

I was having this problem, but it turns out the root cause was that my router reassigned my IP address of the Hue router, and smartthings caches the IP that was first used to set it up in the Hue smartapp. Once I reserved that original IP for the Hue bridge in my router, and rebooted the bridge and router, it worked perfectly - I could finally see the new Hue bulb in the Hue (Connect) smartapp.

I’m thinking I may have the same problem but my issue is that I can’t see the Hue Connect app anywhere in my ST app.

I have 6 bulbs successfully added the first time around but I’m not sure why my Hue Connect app would disappear.

Has anyone else had this issue??

I’ve just bought a new light strip and 3 more bulbs and really don’t want to uninstall my existing bulbs from all my rules.

There’s another thread on this that has some alternate suggestions… Open discussion - Issues with expanding Philips Hue integration (Hue Connect)

I’m not sure what actually fixed mine but here is what I tried:

  1. Rename hue bridge in hue app
  2. Reboot hue bridge and smartthings (unplugged power)
  3. Attempted to add scene in smartthings- finally I saw my new lights

On a side note, I was also having trouble with Google home integration. After following the steps above I was able to relink my hue bridge to Google home
