Help. First Alert.. I looked, honest

Ok so i have TWO first Alert Smoke detector. The issue is that they do not communicate with smart things. ST shows them, but I am unable to get the units to interact with ST in any meaningful way.

I’ve read every thread on the subject. I’ve excluded and repairs over 30 times in various ways (Most common is to scan the barcode)
I changed the driver to MC

I’m sorry, but I cannot get anywhere. Given my non-existent hearing, it’s crucial that I get these things to turn on the lights in the house. Otherwise, I will be a crispy critter by the time I know something is wrong. I look forward to any help you can provide… (Oh and I am on a V2 Hub)

Show us the Events section from the same page the screenshot is from.

Looks good.

It communicates with ST.

What exactly is the issue here?

Please check out the SmartThings Home Monitor! It’ll automatically recognize any smoke detectors and deep inside its settings, you can define what would happen if the detector detects smoke.

I’d show you how to set it up, but… there seems to be an issue right now.

Right in this moment, while I’m typing this, the fire department showed up here at my neighbors house because a smoker detector went off!

It wasn’t me I swear!! First, thanks for trying… If you’re willing let’s keep at this a bit.
I can do what you’re talking about… I’ve done it before. I set the detector to turn on lights when it goes off. Just ran a test with actual smoke and nothing happened. Very confusiing

So I ran a test with actual smoke. The alarm went off, but none of the automation engaged, and the event history shows nothing.

This is my problem

Take a screenshot from the Events section again. It should look different now after the test. Since you have two detectors connected, make sure to choose the right one.

Some smoke detectors don’t emit an event for the first 30 seconds.

When my Frient smoke detectors sound an alarm, they still need at least 30 seconds until they send an event.

Was a false alarm…

It “feels like” there is no “ongoing” communication between the First Alert and Smarthings… it’s like there is initial communication but after that they talk to each other rarely if at all.

Edit: Z-Wave, not Zigbee…

Confused… What do you want me to do?

There’s not much you can do about it if the device doesn’t send messages.

You could install this on your computer…

… and execute this command:

smartthings edge:drivers:logcat

Select the driver that your smoke detector uses, capture the output while you are testing the device and paste it here.

So a little progress was made… Kind of a two steps forward 8 steps back thing… I remember some saying they paired by a scan nearby, and THEN input the Barcode with success…
So I tried that. In doing so it hosed all my devices and put the number 1 after every name, it also kicked my devices OUT of their respective rooms (That sucks, I have hundreds)

Anyway, NOW the event are actually working
So I will keep on this path

Pretty sure Samsung is considering that as a front runner for their “new” SmartThings motto!

The devices renaming themselves and clustering all to a single room when a new device is added is an ongoing issue that has plagued others, including me:
