FAQ: How Outlets/SmartPlugs behave after a Power Outage (Brand differences)

As most people are aware, typically LED smart bulbs will come on at full power after a power outage. This is done so that the bulbs will also work if someone just manually throws the switch. Otherwise, if the bulb had been turned off with the app, it might not turn on again if someone flipped the switch a couple of times.

Outlets are different, because you aren’t likely to run into the same confusion, so different manufacturers have handled the situation differently. If this feature will be important to you, make sure you read the model specifications carefully.

In general, GE, Linear/GoControl and Schlage outlets will be in the “off” state after power is restored.

Leviton and Neo Coolcam pocket sockets will all attempt to restore to the previous state from the time the power was cut.

The Zooz Zen15 heavy duty pocket socket is unusual in both form and function. It has a parameter which lets you set it to always come on after a power outage, always stay off after a power outage, or Restore the previous state. It is specifically designed for appliances with motors like freezers and pumps, as long as they are 15 A or lower.

@scodes has tested the following as well:

The Aeotec Smart Switch 5 version 6 restores “previous state”
The Smartthings appliance module restores “previous state”

@abc reports the Monoprice 27481 is a zwave plus single socket plug which can be set to restore to on, off, or previous state.

Are there any zigbee or zwave outlets that default to ON after losing power? - #12 by abc

Please feel free to post other brands if you have confirmed their power outage behavior. :sunglasses:

Also, please do not discuss smart bulb behavior in this thread. Just outlets and pocket sockets. But if you do want to set your smart bulbs up so that they will turn themselves off again when power is restored, see the following:

The Currant smart plug ( integration available through the “smartthings (Samsung connect)“ app) will attempt to restore to the previous state from the time the power was cut.

Ikea Tradfri zigbee pocket sockets restore to previous state. The TP Link WiFi pocket sockets also restore to previous state.

FFR: The Sylvania Smart+ smart plug powers up to the OFF state when power is restored. I found out the hard way :frowning:

is this list still accurate? I need a smart switch that is power off when power is restored

Depends on the switch. While Z-Wave switches need custom manufacturer support to configure the on/off/last state feature after a power failure, many zigbee switches natively support that because it’s part of the zigbee standards (assuming ofcourse the manufacturer implemented the complete standard). In that case the zigbee driver would need to configure the switch.

The list is old, so not sure specific model references are still accurate in all cases. Definitely verify anything you’re considering, but it’s a good place to start.

For smart plugs in 2024, the safest bet is probably Zooz zwave devices. Check specific models, but most have a parameter that lets you define the power restore behavior, and the company does an excellent job of keeping up with SmartThings architecture changes. If a custom edge driver is required, they typically provide one.

For example, the zooz Zen 04 is a single socket smart plug that gives you full control over power restore behavior. (Zooz is the house brand for the specialty retailer The Smartest House. You can purchase their devices from Amazon or directly from their site. Their tech-support is usually very good. The devices are popular in this community because they have excellent engineering and are reasonably priced.)

From their user manual:

On/Off Status Recovery After Power Failure

Parameter 4: Choose the recovery state for your Smart Plug if power outage occurs.

0 – Smart Plug remembers the status prior to power outage and turns back to it (default)

1 – Smart Plug automatically turns OFF once power is restored (it ignores the status prior to power outage)

2 – Smart Plug automatically turns ON once power is restored (it ignores the status prior to the power outage)

Oh, and we should note that if you have a SmartThings/Aeotec hub and if so, which model, as well as which country you live in, Will affect the device selection available.

For example, most zooz models are designed for the North American market, and since they are Zwave, they will require a SmartThings/aeotec hub. They won’t work for you if your only hub is the SmartThings Station or one of the Samsung smart appliances or televisions, as those don’t have a Zwave radio. But if you live in North America and have a SmartThings V2 hub, SmartThings V3 hub, or Aeotec hub, Zooz is a good candidate.

Also, note that this thread is a FAQ for outlets, either in wall or smart plugs. If you are asking about wall switches, we will need to start a new thread for those.
