External Siren? (UK)

Weston, that link is just for the Smartthings developer portal. There is a lack of information for the Popp Outdoor Siren and no-one has yet to write any device types specific to this device. The best option we’ve currently got is the generic device type from Aeon that is already in the Smartthings Universe which you have now assigned to your Siren.

For those interested I have built my own outdoor Zwave siren by using a Z-Wave Vision Wireless Siren - Battery Powered and a Yale dummy Siren enclosure

The process was straight forward as I extended the Siren LED and speaker cables so they are positioned in the right positions.

I then protected the siren electronic board to make it weather proof by using a plastic box and silicon sealant.

It works very nice and it is being detected by Smartthing as an Aeon Siren

Overall cost for an effective siren : £70 (£25 for the Yale dummy box and £45 for the Siren

The alarm looks professional, effective and runs locally in Smartthings.

The closest I’ve found is either:

Z-Wave Fortrezz Outdoor Siren & Strobe Alarm - £65 on Vesternet
Or
Z-Wave Popp Outdoor Siren - Gen5 - £221

I’m sure I’ve seen another one, but I cant find it again. If I find details I will post up

Hi,

Just a thought. If you plug your smart plug into a cheap UPS would that give you the battery backup? I can’t imagine the alarm would draw that much power so it should run for quite some time before it runs out of battery.

Thanks,
Jon.

Just wanted to update this topic. Popp has come out with a new zwave plus outdoor solar powered siren, quite loud (107 dB). Everything looks great about it except the price, which is running around £225. Still, it may meet the needs of some households:

Neo Coolcam has a much less expensive battery-powered model that they are advertising as indoor/outdoor, but I haven’t been able to find any specs on how weatherproof it actually is and the tone is softer, it sounds more like a mobile phone siren ringtone then an actual siren, at least to me. If anyone has one and can say more about the outdoor specs, that would be helpful.

I have the neo coolcam siren from below link. It is not very loud. OK for internal use, but useless for external. Is there a different external version from neo coolcam?

Hmm, My Popp Solar external siren is now showing as offline - last activity 7 hours ago.

Not good. I can’t seem to get it to respond… it doesn’t sound when I arm the alarm and open a door. It Won’t ‘turn on’ from the app.

Any thoughts?

I’m wondering whether it is because it is outside my house - not hugely far from the SmartThings hub (same side of the house).

I have a spare SmartThings outlet - I’m going to set that up and place it in the spare room which will be very close to the siren and may help extend the signal / strengthen the network.

Am I correct in thinking I will have to borrow my neighbour and his ladders again to re-set this thing to get it back on the network or is there anything can be done without actually messing with the siren itself?

First try turning off device health in the IDE and see if that makes any difference.

Then after you’ve turned it off, run a Z wave repair utility.

It may be the next day until you see the full results, but those two steps may just fix the problem without your having to touch the device. At least one can hope. :sunglasses:

Thanks for the advice.

I followed the instructions but no luck - got a message saying something along the lines of “Z Wave repair of Siren failed to update route”. Ran it a second time to make sure it wasn’t being shy… same.

Thanks anyway. Looking like the ladders tomorrow after work :frowning:

Is it battery-operated? If so, that particular message isn’t actually that big a deal.

Try running the repair again in a few hours, then test the siren in the morning. You may still need to go up the ladders, but it might actually be OK now.

Thanks - Yep… battery operated and solar powered.
I can’t check the battery levels as the DTH doesn’t allow for this (It is running on the Aeon Siren DTH) but I have no reason to think it will be dead… It is on the front of the house, has had plenty of sun and is sheltered from excessive rain by the eaves.

I’ll check it tomorrow with the app before I go up there then.

Out of interest… what exactly does the Z-Wave repair utility do - and why is it needed. - I’m new to this and learning.

I’ve just realised - Adding my SmartThings Outlet is going to have zero effect - It is a Zigbee device and my siren is Z wave.
I may purchase a Z Wave outlet if I can find such a thing to act as a repeater to assist the siren if I get it working again.

Its a shame there are no decent and easy to fit external sirens for SmartThings.

It’s not a question of the battery being dead. Battery powered devices sleep most of the time in order to conserve battery life, and it may well have been asleep when the repair request came through. It happens.

TKB home makes a relatively inexpensive pocket socket on the UK zwave plus frequency. It will work fine as a repeater.

Thank you. Just ordered one. :grinning:

Update:

The siren came back on the network intermittently.
I ordered the ZWave outlet (the TKB one from Vesternet) and have that plugged in in the spare bedroom (the siren is on the outside of the bedroom wall)

It seems to be more stable on the network presently. Hopefully it was nothing more that a weak ZWave network and this is improved by the addition of the outlet.

Have you run the Z wave repair utility? That will make sure the siren knows the pocket socket has been added to the network.

I did try -it gets as far as ‘z-Wave repair starting’ - and no further…

Still not perfect this Popp Siren. I walked into my integral garage the other morning having thought the SHM had been disarmed. It hadn’t and the siren duly activated. This is good.

I opened the SmartThings app to stop the siren and disarm the SHM. The Siren wouldn’t cancel and just ignored all communication and continued to ring. It wouldn’t respond to anything I did in the SmartThings SHM app or from ActionTiles. This is not good.

After a period (I think 5 minutes) it stopped ringing.

I know this was an old post but SAMLATER i take my hat off to you, this is a very simple solution that works an absolute treat and the possibilities are endless and there was just enough info in your post to work out the wiring. I have an Aeotec in the house and the AG6 outside, both scream their nuts off when something happens and to make it simple I for the family to disarm I use xiaomi smart buttons to silence the alarms. Brilliant thanks for the inspiration!
