[EDGE] Ring Alarm Keypad (2nd Gen) Edge Driver

Awesome! Hopeful I can get it worked out soon. Managing arming/disarming/garage, etc automations has been one hurdle for our house since setting up ST years ago as we haven’t yet gotten a smart lock as our door is a bit wonky in various weather conditions, so I am hoping to use this keypad to manage guest access and setting up house scenes accordingly.

Would it be possible for you to buy another Ring keypad to try? It seems like you’ve done everything else to get it working.

Also, if it works out the way things always do for me, the moment you get the new device the old one will decide to cooperate. :grinning:

Oh, it has crossed my mind, just I keep getting sideways looks when an amazon package shows up with home automation gear in it

In his case it’s not a keypad issue. It’s an issue with the specific Smartthings server instance that’s communicating with his hub. It’s not downloading the necessary components the hub is requesting. It will likely get fixed when SmartThings refreshes the cache or the server. This happens a few years ago also and was fixed when SmartThings did some sort of a refresh / resync.

Handy to know, thanks.

@RBoy I tried re-adding the Ring keypad to my V2 hub today after getting the 52.11 FW update and it added successfully, so I tried on my V3 hub and it added successfully there as well. Woohoo!

Just a quick shout-out to RBoy and Maddie for this excellent driver. I’ve been working on moving my home security system into ST’s since the announcement of the Nest Secure shutdown. I’m using my old V2 hub as a dedicated ST security system. I bought all the hardware, (Ring Keypads, Ring Motion sensors and a bunch of Ring Contact sensors) but this driver was the missing piece to get ST’s to do everything and more than what my Nest Secure has been doing. I’m using the Yale Assure 2 ZWave locks with another RBoy driver and now this keypad driver has filled the gap in completing my conversion. Last night I moved my good night routine from GH to ST’s. If you’re still using the Nest Secure and looking for a replacement (before April 8), this is the way. RIP Nest Secure.

The functionality is, indeed, fairly similar to nest secure without a cellular plan. SmartThings Will require an active Internet connection to the SmartThings cloud to use the app, arm/disarm the system, or receive any notifications. (this and the lack of a battery backup is the reason the SmartThings system cannot be UL listed as a security system.)

In addition, whether you had the nest secure cellular plan or not, that system had a 12 hour battery backup. Smartthings does not. So you’ll need to consider whether you want to add a UPS option to replace that as well.

If you were using Nest secure with a cellular plan, however, SmartThings is not going to provide the same functionality at all. So in particular, if you want to be able to receive security system notifications if the Internet is out, you should look at alternative candidates like the ring security system or some of the other UL listed security systems in this price range.

A simple solution is a cellular router like a t-mobile/verizon-att internet plan or a usb data stick from a mobile provider connected to a regular router (eg asus) with dual wan. Put in a UPS are you’re sorted.

As long as the SmartThings cloud is available, which is not a guaranteed service. :cloud_with_lightning:

Everybody has to make their own choices about what they want from a security system, it’s just important to note that SmartThings is not UL listed as a security system, and does not have the same level of reliability and offgrid functionality as systems that are, even if you add your own backups and a secondary Internet connection. Many people won’t care about that at this price point, but others will. As long as you know what you’re getting, you can make your own choice. :sunglasses:

Nest Secure goes into a lot of details about how the system needs to be installed and operated in order to meet UL standards:

In order to meet UL requirements for use, Detect must communicate directly with Guard. So if you’re using a Nest Connect to extend the range of your system, you also need to make sure Detect can communicate directly with Guard; this is the only type of connection that meets UL requirements.

So I’m just saying if you’re going from a UL listed system to SmartThings, you should be aware of what you’re giving up, particularly since there are other candidates available, which do have UL listings. Of course, if you weren’t paying for the cellular contract with Nest secure, then, none of this matters, as the two systems are pretty equivalent in those configurations, and neither was UL listed for security.

This is correct, I have T-Mobile Home Internet which is cell based. I also have UPS’s on all of my critical equipment, including my gateway and hubs. I didn’t use the Nest Secure with a monitored plan, so I have essentially the same service. I also have fail-over backup to a cell hotspot incase of an outage. I realize this isn’t for everyone, but it meets my needs.

I kept hearing how this was good and I tried it out and I’m disappointed it’s missing features that the free edge driver has. I can’t get the option to control the volume levels or what sound plays? The only thing this really has going for it is the keycode being integrated into STHM

There’s no settings in the hamburger menu. Am I missing something? It looks like you say there should be things to change but I don’t see anything.

I had to remove the keypad and add it back for all the settings to show up. There are still some issues I have with how it operates but I’m attempting to see if I need to change something or what.

Maybe someone can help me.

When I enter my code and hit the disarm button at the top it starts an entry delay which makes no sense. I would only want an entry delay when one of the sensors activates. I don’t understand why in the settings disarm is available as pressing the check symbol.

I’ve been using the RBoy driver for my keypad for over a year now. If you go into the device and click on the 3 dots (top right) all of the settings you’re looking for are there. Bell tone is the sound that will play, Bell volume is the the loudness and the siren volume is for the alarm. Lower is the announcement volume for messages (these are canned announcements).

You have to setup routines for the keypad functions, what it should do when certain keys are press, if you want chimes when the doors are opened and so on.

Keypad device settings:

Routines:

These are tied into the STHM applet in the life section. This is where you let it what devices to include for security, smoke alarms (if you have them integrated) and leak sensors.

All three of these must be setup to use the system effectively: devices, STHM and SLGA.

Sorry to drag up an older topic, but I’m trying to find an answer that I haven’t been able to find so far. I have the Rboy edge driver working for the Ring keypad, and it’s working good. What I’m trying to do is have different chimes for different doors. It’s important to know when the basement door gets open if no one is down there. I found that the edge driver is supposed to be compatible with the Chime and Notifications for Doorbells and Sensors app, and that you can accomplish what I’m trying to do with it. The issue is that it doesn’t seem to be able to be installed on the new platform where the edge drivers are actually used for. Anyone have any insight?

Thank you very much!

Right now it’s just one tone which is set in the preferences, but it’s possible to create a custom capability to allow you to pick a different tone.

The question is how are you planning to use it? Are you planning to use an automation routine to trigger it, if so what would it look like?

Sorry for the delayed response. I didn’t notice the notification. Ultimately I’m trying to have it have a different sound for a certain door opening. If there is a way to change the sound being played via routine/automation, I can build that into the trigger of when that door is opened.

Door open triggers sensor → runs routine → change sound for keypad chime → play sound on keypad(s) → change sound back to default.

This is assuming there is a way to change the sound automatically via command, and not have to do it manually. Does that make sense, or am I missing something?

Thanks!
