DISCUSS Deals/Sales/Coupons/Pricing HERE (post deals in the other thread)

I agree, but that’s going to require a third thread since that thread will be about discussing discussions and the third thread will be about the discussion of discussing discussions thread.

Yes, absolutely! I really like this idea (for old, archived threads)!

Exactly ^^^^THIS^^^^

…Why would I bother looking at a deal if several other people say the product is horrible or some other reason not to purchase it…
Again, I totally agree with the idea of wanting to know whether or not something is really a good product or not; or whether the posted deal is a good deal or not, BUT those are NOT points to take up in the deal-posting thread.

Why would you EVER in ANY situation go out and buy something just because somebody on a forum told you it’s a good product and currently available for a god deal?

First, if you know how to think for yourself (I’m just assuming we all do here), you would go do your research on the product and on the deal.

The deal-posting thread is not for that kind of discussion. We’re all adults here (again, assuming; making me an ass once again, I know, but still…), and we all know how Google works. Why not act like them too and do our own research outside of the deal-posting thread (again, we have an entire forum here dedicated to discussions about devices and all kinds of other stuff. Why so much resistance when a group of people want to use a single thread for a very specific purpose?), and be respectful to those that rely on that thread for being alerted to actual DEALS, and not always coming in here to find 5 or ten (or 20 or thirty) posts about this or that which don’t add any new deals to the mix?

Ok, isn’t a community forum about discussion? Why limit discussion? Why stifle discussion?
Yes, exactly.

Why clutter up a thread that is supposed to only exist for the purpose of posting DEALS with all kinds of other types of comments; meanwhile, hindering the REAL ‘discussion’ by always triggering this nonsensical ‘discussion’ about what the thread is supposed to be for and how to use it?

I totally agree with you about this being a forum for discussion.
So, I say, set the discussion free and allow it to be whatever it wants to be and not be limited or stifled, by doing it in the discussion thread, and not the deal-posting thread.

It’s not really all that complicated. It’s WAY more complicated when people can’t just use the tools available for what the majority obviously want to use them for.

I SUGGEST A POLL
Perhaps the next thing we should do is create a polling thread to gauge which option is best, according to the majority of the people that most often use this thread/thread-set.

We could list out each concept in the OP, with a separate post dedicated to each concept, and we’d vote by clicking the ‘Like’ button for the post representing the concept we prefer.

p.s. Personally, I think it is REALLY, REALLY cool that we’ve now managed to contain a BUNCH of this discussion in the DISCUSSION thread instead of cluttering up the deal-posting thread. I know that a lot of people here truly appreciate that fact. So, thanks a lot, everybody!

Tie goes to the house. Shipped at 11:36 PM on Thursday for Sat delivery. Lowe’s beat my shipping on Friday by 24 minutes. They actually put both Gardenspot sets in the same box ( Or at least I only have 1 tracking number).

Start a thread titled DEAL LINKS ONLY. Have a Mod. monitor it a delete anything that isn’t a link.

Then shove all discussion about the device on sale to the Device page.

Or even better just leave it as is. Lock it at the end of the month and start a new one.

This has gotten kinda ridiculous. We do need to start using a quote as part of the reply to make things a bit less confusing,

Guys lets just keep both sides of the fence happy. Make 2 threads. 1 strictly for posting and another for posting and discussion.

200 posts discussing whether or not discussions should be allowed, if discussions dilute the thread is ridiculous ? :monkey:

Did that many ppl have a problem with the thread? I didn’t see many ppl complaining.

I’m new to this community so I’m throwing this out if this hasn’t been considered. How about making a category for deals? Each new deal gets a new thread. Discussions will be in the same thread. If the same deal ressurects it will be easy to search and/or link to the old deal as knowledgebase.

Basically how deal sites work without the upvoting.

Now that’s a GREAT IDEA! The threads would remain manageable and be s much better service to all of us!

Another great idea!

@jody.albritton ? ? ? ? Can this be done? ? .

It is a good idea, but I have a few concerns. First, there are days when there are half a dozen or more deals posted. It would quickly flood and overwhelm the rest of the forum. Two, the deal posts would get mixed up with the posts and discussions about the actual item, leading to confusion. Three, some deals are actually multiple deals. When I posted the deal about the Iris stuff in Chelsea, NY, it was half a dozen items. Rather than one post, that would be six new topics. Same thing for all of the Lightify deals that went up recently, as there were almost a dozen separate items. Finally, I am concerned that people would continue conversations about the items in the deal threads once they were up and it would be very difficult to quickly skim through and look for deals without having to read a million unrelated posts (granted, that is the entire issue that this post was designed to prevent). Just a few thoughts and thanks for the great community everyone.

Well, all good points in both sides.
I know there are better forum programs available, this one’s style is archaic. But, it’s what we have.
It’s tough to search, until you get the hang of it. It’s tough to navigate, even after you get the hang of it.

My vote goes to just leaving it like it is, unless ST wants to upgrade the software.

I don’t see where every item would have to be a new thread. A single Philips lights on sale at Lowe’s would work. The same when HD has locks or whatever as a daily deal. You would not need a separate entry for each item, just the deal.

This has been suggested before, and usually loses steam in light of the fact that it would mean that we’d have bunches and bunches of deals threads, and we already have that over at SlickDeals, etc.

However, this time when you mentioned it, I think I get (and like) it now…

For the forum in general, it would keep all deal posts in the same section.

For the people relying on the deal-posting thread for DEALS-ONLY, it could work like this…
Subscribe to the DEALS SECTION, so that you get notified of every new deal thread that gets created.
That way, if that particular deal thread is something you’re not interested in, you can safely ignore it, and by doing so (and NOT going to the thread), you won’t miss out on any other deals that sometimes get lost in the flurry of commenting that happens soon after (because the only commenting you’d miss out on would be the commenting going on in that particular deal thread that you decided to ignore; i.e. the next actual deal thread created would trigger another notification).

BAM! Done.

If a majority can hang with that, I think it’s really the best way to do this.
I know we don’t just want to duplicate what’s going on at SD, and we wouldn’t be; i.e. assuming everyone plays along and makes sure the only deals that get posted here are actually, at least in some way, related to SmartThings.

e.g of a gray area that is totally acceptable would be cameras. Even if the camera itself isn’t directly compatible with SmartThings via Device Handlers or SmartApps, if images and/or video from it can be integrated into SmartTiles, etc, then it’s definitely a welcome post around here.

Guys please stay on topic and talk about the deals in the other thread. If we must let’s open a third thread on how to handle ourselves in this thread and the deals thread. I am tired of this thread now getting cluttered. (see what I did there)

I’m not totally sure I understand your point, but if it is that we should just ‘police’ the deals thread and that’s it…

This already happens a lot, but it really only ‘works’ for a minute or two. So, it has to continuously keep happening all the time…cluttering up the thread with even more non-deal posts.

I think we are outgrowing the “single deal thread”. As more and more new people come in (like me) the more discussion is needed. Sometimes, I just get to know about a device through a deal. Eventually this 2nd discussion thread will be too hard keep track.

Duplicate deals need to be flagged or reported. A mod would definitely be needed, I’m not sure how could this be done here though.

My point is that the purpose of this thread is ridiculous and the content in here proves it. Nobody knows what the best way to do this is and to be quite honest we won’t keep everyone happy so how about we just ignore this thread and go back to how things were. There doesn’t seem to be that many people complaining asides from yourself and and a few others (this was pointed out earlier). Everyone else keeps posting in that other thread, ignoring this one, and you spend most of your day trying to correct people to do things the way you think it should be done. The only people posting in here are the “regulars” trying to keep others happy but its not working. Do you enjoy continuously cleaning up threads? I know I won’t so I just ignore what I don’t like and move on with my life without complaining.

I am not trying to fight here I am just saying that the other thread was working fine, deals were being posted, people were discussing it. What more do you want from a community? If it ain’t broke don’t fix it. Discussion is valid especially when people post stuff that is not compatible with SmartThings or a special coupon or store code needs to be entered. Why do I want to keep up with 2 threads just to understand if the product is right for me. What do you do when someone posts a deal on something you don’t need or care for? You ignore it.

Again, these are all good, valid and necessary opinions.

In order to do what’s best, I think we should do what’s right; start a POLL THREAD to let the users decide in at least a semi-democratic way.

I say we ban all deals! ! !

Here’s an idea… A new category

“A place to complain”
