Z-Wave Dimmer switch not found by SMartThings problem

I have installed a Leviton DZ6HD-1BZ 600w dimmer switch and the dumb switch for a 3way operation…and it is working fine but…I can’t get SmartThings to find it as a device/thing… I have 2 issues:

  1. I contacted ST support and they said the hub may not be close enough to pair it, but I have a GE fan smart switch right next to it, and the hub found it fine.
  2. I tried to find the device, so i did the instructions held the paddle for 7 secs, the light blinked green (even though the instructions said it would blink amber), and pressed the paddle again, but no luck.
  3. I tried to add it manually through ST, and in the list of devices under switches/dimmers, I did not see the DZ6HD-1BZ listed, so I don’t know which one I should pick or if I can…

What could be the problem? Or more what is the solution? Am I doing something wrong?
TY for the help…

Try excluding it. Goto hamburger menu (more) in App, then Hub (hub is online), then Z-Wave utilities, then General Device Exclusion. See if it finds it there.

Then try to repair.

Note that the exclude is a direct hub to device operation so the hub needs to be near the device/dimmer.

Hard to do if it’s hardwired…

I have had this problem with GE switches. Something went funky with the pairing. Wouldn’t show up on pairing because it was already paired but wasn’t showing up in the app. When going to exclude, which I do not believe it has to be close to the hub just on the Z-Wave network, it was found and excluded. When re-pairing, all was well.

Agreed. When I had this problem I moved the hub nearer the switch but that’s not always an option.

What I was trying to say is that exclude does not work across hops thus moving the hub closer would just remove any issue if the switch itself is too far away for direct hub communication. I was told this by Support and I’ve read it in a few places. Perhaps it was wrong information. Repairing can work over hops.

Awww got you! Never knew that. Hmm. Been a long time since I’ve had to exclude anything but given this info, its going to be hell on earth upgrading! Silly me went and made everything I could “Smart”. :fearful:

Found an old post of mine (need to read whole post)…

I’m sure that’s very frustrating. :disappointed_relieved: The fact that the LED blinked a different color than you were expecting indicates that you haven’t quite hit the pattern that the device wants.

You’ll need to start by doing a general exclude. Note the following, as several people have reported issues with the new Leviton zwave plus devices, and it seems like the pattern has changed somewhat:

https://support.smartthings.com/hc/en-us/articles/200878314-How-to-exclude-Z-Wave-devices

After you get it successfully excluded, follow the instructions to include it again.

If it doesn’t work, or again you see the wrong color LED, contact either Leviton support or SmartThings support.

I went to the exclusion screen for the hub, but it was never listed there, so there was nothing to exclude. Unless it doesn’t have to be showing up there to need the excluding.

I also don’t understand the range part, since I installed a GE smart switch right next to it, and the hub found this device.

I also noticed when i tried to MANUALLY add the Leviton, this particular model I mentioned wasn’t specifically in the list, so I don’t know which other one to try, if they can work the same even though they are different Leviton models…

If the device has successfully been paired to the network, then the exclude Will find the device even if it’s more than one hop away.

If the device belongs to a different controller, or was never successfully paired to the network, then it has to be within one hop because since it’s not on the network, you can’t pass a message to it.

Thanks for the clarification. Support did not provide that important bit of information.

To the OP, sorry for the slightly wrong info I handed out there.

Bummer. I can say that my first 6 devices gave me the blues…Not because they were bad, but because I was, most of the time, doing something wrong or the device was actually added and I missed it somehow.

Might just be a bad switch. Hope you get it worked out.

First things first… Check the model number which is on the device itself, not just on the box, if you can. Leviton has now put out several different models would use the same physical case, and they don’t all work with SmartThings. But as long as it’s the model number that you gave in your first post, that part should be OK.

Now, as to to exclusion.

When you add a device to your network, that’s called “inclusion.” Once the device has been successfully added, it shows up on your list of devices, and if you want to remove it from your network, you can do a process called “exclusion” where you are sending a specific message to that particular device telling it to clear the controller ID information It has stored.

But what happens if you don’t have the original controller anymore? Maybe the controller broke. Maybe you bought the device used. Maybe somebody made a mistake at the factory and had the device connected to a test bed, and forgot to clear the controller information. Now what?

Fortunately, the people who created Z wave standard thought of this possibility and they created a process called “General exclusion.”

General exclusion allows any certified Z wave controller to issue an exclusion to any Z wave device that can hear it. Then the human completes the exclusion process by doing some physical manipulation of the device that they actually want to have clear its stored information. Usually this is some kind of button press or on/off pattern. The specific pattern will vary by device and model, so you’ll have to get hold of the user guide for your device in order to know what its exclusion pattern is.

When you are doing a general exclusion, the device will not show up in the things list because the whole point is that it’s never been on your network, or at least never successfully been on your network. Your hub doesn’t know anything about it. Your hub is just Broadcasting a general exclusion to any zwave device that can hear it, and it’s up to you to then perform the complete exclusion pattern on the device that you are trying to exclude.

Once the exclusion has been accepted by the device, it clears its controller fields and then it is ready to be added to a new network. Which doesn’t have to be the same controller as the one that issued the general exclusion.

I hope that helps clear up some of the confusion.

As far as range, it’s just hard to predict, particularly since you were talking about two devices from different manufacturers and you don’t know for sure if the one that is on the network is using a repeater or not.

I realize it’s difficult to move hardwired devices around. Many people use a minimote to do inclusion/exclusion for just this reason.

thanks JD. The ST Support suggested I move the hub closer…so I am going to get a longer ethernet cable and see if closer works. Even though it is in same room, and only 14 ft away. I really don’t think this is it, but I have to eliminate it, to know for sure.
If that doesn’t work, I will try Leviton, and see if they have any ideas I guess…

I was just hoping someone had already installed a Leviton Decora Z wave plus dimmer with success or with solved problems…

Some people have it. You might ask in the following thread

would rebooting the ST hub do any good with hub not finding the Leviton Zwave dimmer? What happens to everthing that ST hub communicated with before? Does hub find them all and reconnect?

It shouldn’t make any difference as far as finding it. The hub has a table of all the devices that have connected to it previously. When the power comes back on it knows that those devices are still part of its network. It doesn’t pick up any new devices and it doesn’t lose any of the ones it previously had.

Rebooting the hub can help if the problem is that the hub has gotten out of sync with your cloud account. Taking the hub off of power for at least 15 minutes can also help with your zigbee devices ( although again, it won’t add any new devices to the network that weren’t previously added, but it can clean up the message path tables). But since the Leviton is a Z wave devices, it doesn’t get involved in that process either.

So if you want to reboot the hub you can, but it shouldn’t have any effect on the Leviton zwave device one way or the other.

avoid those problems and do what i do😉pair them with the hub nearby. ALL. @ashutosh1982 and I do this for customers that want SmartThings but want easy setup. This home had 35 switches installed and mesh network perfect in 3 hours.

I have the same dimmer, DZ6HD. I have replaced it twice and cannot get it to connect to the hub. I see a successful pair on the device based on led flashes however it does not show up in the app for like 1 minute or so. When you click to confirm when it eventually shows up it says an unexpected error occurred. At times I did get it to show in the app, the controls in the app did nothing and the light would not react. I have excluded it multiple times, done factory resets, and move the hub to right where the switch is. This is my first zwave dimmer, and I have outlets and leak sensors for smartthings that worked just fine. I have some insteon dimmers still setup in other rooms and never had issues like this with setup.

OP, did you ever figure your situation out, if so how did you get it to work?

November 2022 here and SmartThings version 1.6.92.23. There’s no “hamburger menu” or anything that hints at “more” in the app. Just trying to exclude a Leviton dimmer switch that is not recognized by the SmartThings Z-wave controller.

How to force-exclude a device that is not recognized (so that I can start over and connect to it)?
