The SmartThings Wifi hub cannot connect to the Sonoff M5 Matter device

Please help me check if my SmartThings Wifi hub supports connection to Matter devices, specifically the Sonoff M5 Matter device. I have tried the following methods:

  • QR Code pairing: I tried to connect using the QR code. The device was found nearby, but the addition step failed with an error stating the hub is not supported.

  • eWelink setup and reset: I installed the eWelink app, successfully connected the M5 device normally (directly, not through any hub), upgraded the M5’s firmware, and then deleted it from eWelink. I then attempted to connect it to the SmartThings Wifi hub again, but it still returned the same unsupported error.

  • Multi-Admin pairing: I re-added the device to eWelink, generated a Matter code, and tried to use that code to connect via the SmartThings Wifi hub, but it also failed with the unsupported error.

  • Linking eWelink/SmartThings: I tried linking the eWelink account with SmartThings Wifi, but the M5 device did not show up.

Conclusion: Does the SmartThings Wifi hub simply not support Matter devices? What is the workaround? Should I wait for a newer firmware update with support? (If the SmartThings Wifi hub does not support Matter, it would be truly disappointing—I have many different types of devices from various brands integrated into this hub. Having to switch to a new hub would be very sad. I might have to abandon the SmartThings platform entirely.)

ST Wi-Fi hubs don’t support Matter. It’s unlikely they ever will as the AWA shows Matter as “Unsupported" vs “Unavailable" and the last firmware update for these hubs was June 2024.

You can use Hub Replace to move your devices to a new hub easily. Note: if you have z-wave devices, You would not be able to move them to a Station or the new V4 hub (Aeotec Smart Home Hub 2).

  • Hub Replace provides an upgrade path for some older hubs that are not supported by Hub Groups, such as Samsung Connect Home, SmartThings Wi-Fi, and Samsung SmartThings Hub 2015 (Hub v2).
