The End of Groovy Has Arrived

I am going to miss “Notify me When”.

Does anyone have a suggestion for an easy alternative for Vacation Lighting Director? I use it to keep one light always on and cycle a bunch of other lights whenever we all leave home.

In the app, tap on Menu, choose Labs and try “No worries while away”. Some users like it, some don’t.

yeah, No Worries While Away or I use Alexa Guard’s option for random lights when armed

Have you used it? Wondering about the cycle on and off. It’s not quite clear how it works based on the description. Does this turn on all the lights I select for the chosen time, all off, then all off again? Or does it switch between them?

Also unfortunate you can’t use sunset or sunrise. Big difference in the winter when it’s dark at 4:00 versus in the summer and it’s dark at 8:30.

I do have an Alexa or two around the house, but I’m mostly a Google Home user, so haven’t done much with Alexa automation. Can you automate Alexa to turn on/off guard when smart things registers away (virtual device or otherwise)? Or does it require verbally telling it to activate/deactivate? If the latter, I just don’t think I can get my family to do that.

yes, you can automate it, but it requires some work arounds. I have a virtual contact switch created in smartthings that turns on/off based on our Goodbye and I’m Back routines. Then in Alexa Routines you can create a routine to arm alexa guard based on that switch. But they don’t let you disarm it via that option in Alexa routines. Instead you create a custom action in another routine that mimics saying “Alexa, i’m back” based on the switch

It’s rubbish. I gave them feedback that it should be called “no worries” because it doesn’t look at the away status at all, so you have to enable the smart app every time you go out.

I’ve just recreated similar using the smart lighting app. It no longer turns things on and off when I’m away in the evening but does turn on a set of lights that are visible to passers by.

I have an oddity in my Beta Dashboard today in the Automations section:

SmartSense by Id…? clicking on it takes me to https://strongman-regional.api.smartthings.com/endpointapp/init but the page is empty. about a minute later:
ERROR: Something went wrong. Please try to install the SmartApp again.

ahh: Idaho Farm Bureau which I have never installed nor attempted to install and it does not appear in the app.

OK… this one may or may not have been available before but in the iOS app, I now see “Search for unknown tags near you (Labs)” on the Settings page in the app

just noticed it today when i was looking at Android vs iOS features. Doesn’t really make sense when Galaxy Tags can’t be used on iOS devices at all :joy:

That’s covered in a notice. Galaxy owners already had it in SmartThings Find and they wanted to extend the ability to detect unknown tags nearby to users of other phones.

last notice in the iOS app is dated Oct. 2022

Interesting. I think that’s possibly the app described on st-schema.com. I don’t know why that would suddenly put in an appearance.

The Android app has an update notice for December that includes:

4. Search for Unknown Tags

iOS and non-Galaxy Android devices will now see a new option in the settings of the SmartThings app to “Search for unknown tags near you”.

If you suspect an unknown SmartTag is in your vicinity, you can access this feature by selecting the “Menu (☰)”, choosing “Search for unknown tags”, and selecting “Start”.

  • If using a Galaxy device, the “Search for unknown tags” feature is located in the settings of the SmartThings Find service found in the Life tab.

The latest notice had a mention of " a plan to migrate supported virtual devices"

Ugh. Guess I’ll do the same thing with a routine as I think think I’ll run into the same issue with Alexa as when I tried to automate ecobee since I don’t want any sort of verbal or phone notification when it does stuff which I’m assuming the disarm command would generate.

That seems to be my main theme with this transition. I’m able to accomplish most things, but they take a proliferation of routines and are only about 50 to 60% as good as they used to be.
