SMS Messages Not Received in Google Voice

With in the last week or so I have not been receiving SMS messages sent from ST to my Google Voice number. For several years I have had routines sending SMS messages to GV with little to no issues.

I have checked and I do not block ST short code in GV.

I have sent YES to ST’s short code from GV and have not received a reply. I also sent YES from my cell phone number and did receive a reply.

Are others having this issue with ST and GV?

This was related to Automatically Run Routines. I did create a Test routine based on time and that SMS was not received.

As as side note, after my first post I switched to a new phone. While setting up my account with two large online retailers, their SMS verifications messages also failed to be shown within Google Voice.

I will treat this as a GV issue going forward.

Thank you for your replay.

You aren’t the only one having the issue. The last ST message i received to GV was on Monday. It’s been working fine for years. Messages to the ST app work, all of my routines I have setup to notify ST and GV. I created a new one that sends to ST, GV & my carrier number. The notifications for ST & carrier arrived but GV never arrived. I don’t know if the issue is with Samsung or GV. I am still getting GV messages from other sources just not ST.

Same issue here. ST SMS to my google voice number has been working for years for some of my automatically run routines . . . now no SMS since approximately 8/18/24 . . . changing my automations to SMS my carrier number works fine. I continue to get GV SMS from non ST sources without issue.

Any updates on this? Has someone opened up a support ticket with Samsung? . . . I’m not sure how to do that . . .

You can open a ticket from the ST app. Menu | Contact us | Error reports

The more people that report it the better. I have yet to find any official statement from Samsung but this is clearly happening to anyone using GV for SMS. I have two GV numbers and neither one is receiving ST SMS notifications they only work to my carrier number. Stopped working for me 8\19\24 after years of working just fine. GV still receiving messages from any other source.

Yup, can confirm. Last text message I got from Smartthings to my Google Voice number was Aug. 15th. In my case, it’s a bit of a pain, because my cell provider doesn’t have signal (and I mean AT ALL) in my rural area, AND for whatever reason, this provider doesn’t support voice OR text over WiFi (and I can at least get Internet service, slow and intermittent as it may be). At least with GV, I can reliably get text/SMS messages, even though the Internet connection is usually too intermittent and laggy for actual phone calls, but even then, if someone actually leaves a message, GV allows me to get the voicemail message from the app or web page (and will do an attempt at transcribing the message to text with their voice recognition algorithm).

Anyway, like others have done, I’ve also verified that I can still receive text messages from other numbers/sources to GV successfully, tried sending “YES” to the ST number, opened the “blocked number” list in my GV account and verified that “‪844647” (the ST “short code” number) is not included in the list, even recreated the Rules within ST that send text messages. A search on Google itself returns a lot of results, but this thread is about the only relevant result for this particular case specifically involving SMS messages from ST to a GV number (so I’m guessing there haven’t been a lot of complaints to Support at Google, since no other truly relevant results come up in the search).

So, like for others, it’s almost certainly an issue with GV, not with ST (unfortunately).

Has the ST userbase shrunk so much that there would be this few people trying to have SMS messages from ST get sent to a GV number?

My last ST to GV text was on 8/18/24. I opened a support case with Smartthings as suggested–hopefully this leads to something. Has anyone tried to open a support ticket with google voice?

I did after posting my response, above.

Edit to add: I went the route of going through the website, which directed me to send an e-mail to the GV Support team (which is only available weekdays, so I’m sure I won’t hear anything until at least Tues., since Mon. is a holiday).

I don’t think Google has “support tickets”. I did send Feedback to Google from the GV Help menu. The Feedback is at the bottom of the list.

I also called ST support.

I encourage others to do the same.

I doubt calling ST support will help. It’s pretty certain that the issue has nothing to do with ST and is due to something going on with GV, since people are reporting that text messages from ST to their regular cell number does work, only texts to GV numbers are not working.

Edit to add: In other words, text messages from ST are definitely getting out because they’re getting received by regular cell numbers, only when ST tries to send a text to a GV number is it not working.

I have certain bank accounts/etc that work for account verification with carrier #'s but not GV #'s . . . even though ST SMS to carrier # works, it still could be a problem on the ST end of things … .

Should have known. Support from GV claims it’s not their fault. Entire response from them quoted below:

Thank you for contacting Google Voice Support.

We understand you are having issues receiving short codes from Smartthings service. We are committed to guiding you accordingly.

We’d like to bring to your attention some important information regarding the use of Google Voice for certain services, particularly those involving security codes or short codes. It has come to our notice that many services and shortcodes may no longer work with Google Voice for security reasons.

Various entities, including banks and other business organizations, are taking steps to enhance security measures by limiting the use of phone numbers to true mobile carrier numbers. Sadly, Google Voice numbers, while versatile and convenient, do not fall into the category of true mobile carrier numbers.

To elaborate further, Google Voice numbers are SMS-enabled, fixed-VoIP numbers, and the SMS functionality is facilitated through third-party SMS gateway services. This structure may pose compatibility issues with services that prioritize true mobile numbers for security or verification purposes.

I’m afraid these security policies are beyond the control of Google, and certain companies, especially banks and other businesses, have started enforcing restrictions on the types of phone numbers accepted for receiving security codes. As Google Voice numbers do not qualify as true mobile numbers, they may not be accepted by such services.

We can assure you that no changes were made to your account or settings related to receiving short codes. Everything is functioning normally on our end, and there are no issues or hindrances.

After two solid weeks of emails and responses to and from the Support Techs at Google Voice, where they kept repeating the same excuses over and over again (“GV is a VoIP service and is not like true mobile numbers” or “Some services refuse to work with VoIP numbers” and others) and essentially telling me that there’s nothing else they can do, so I should just go and have myself a nice day, I suddenly started getting the text messages from ST to my GV number again, just a couple of days ago. I also seem to be receiving texts from other short code numbers again, too. No acknowledgement from anyone at GV that they did anything.

Hope that this continues to work. The places I stay, now that I’m retired, are very rural and don’t get cell signals, and I can’t get text messages on my regular mobile number without driving all the way into town, so I rely on being able to get these messages via WiFi on my GV number.

In summary, as you may have guessed, support at Google Voice is just as frustrating as every other company (Comcast, AT&T, etc.) and will do nothing but point fingers instead of actually investigating what you ask them to.

great news! My smartthings to Google voice SMS notifications resumed working normally Sunday 9/22! hopefully this means it’s fixed for all of us!

I also just started receiving ST SMS text on Google Voice. Thanks to everyone that contacted ST and GV about this issue.
