hello all. can an automation be created, that notifies me that a Tag that i own, has entered a preset geo-location? in example, my 5 year old kid’s Tag, thats in his backpack, and has entered my neighborhood because hes on the school bus coming home? i cant seem to find this type of automation. thanks fam.
I want that too.
i know a lot of things arent implemented for security reason, just cant seem to think of an issue with this. relying on the school system’s bus GPS app is horrible, their connection is iffy, and the app itself doesnt load properly some days, so it eats up 30-45 minutes of my time staring out the window waiting for the bus to appear.
only thing i can find even remotely close to my topic is this thread, which the solution seems to be defunct as well.
I own and use 5 ST Tags 2. The ST Routines does not show Tags as a triggering device. The Life portion of the ST App will show location but only triggers a notification when the Tag enters/leaves the hub location, ie. your home. I do not see any way to assign a geo-location other than the hub location. The Tile tag and app may provide what you’re looking for. I do not know if it integrates to ST. Hope that helps.
How do I get a notification when it comes home? I don’t see it.
only place i see something concerning, leaving or arriving at a place, is from within the Family Care feature in the Life section, however, once ive downloaded the Family Care feature, i dont have any selections or things to change.
My best guess is that Samsung Electronics and SmartThings might be considered as different organisations for data control purposes and that could limit the flow of personal data. Any data in the SmartThings API might need to be collected independently.
Is that associated with “offline finding devices” such as Stations and TVs?
I don’t believe it shows the tag entering/leaving a hub location. Instead, it shows when the tag is no longer in proximity to the device to which it is registered. This makes sense as 1) you don’t have to have a hub in order to register a tag; and 2) tags utilize BLE to communicate with other BLE capable devices to update the location and ST hubs don’t support BLE.
Tags are not triggers in ST Routines, however, their capabilities are exposed in the 3rd party rules engine sharptools.io. You might be able to utilize Sharptools to get the notifications you want, although it may require their paid tier to set variables for the desired geofence or longitude/latitude. @joshua_lyon might have more insight.
I find it under Life, Find, (select a tag), More (…), Notify when arriving or leaving. The only option is the Hub location, as opposed to selecting a school or office, when the tag leaves.
Dan, this is what I see.
What hub do you have? I think the charging station allows for this functionality.
Yep, I see the same thing. I think this further illustrates that the tag has no relation to a hub for geo-tracking.
Additionally, when you look at the device card for a tag, two things stand out. 1) it shows Connected and I have no hub at the location where the tag is located which indicates to me that it is connected to my phone. 2) the automations state they can be started when the tag is connected to your phone.
Leaving behind/finding a tag is simply in relation to the device to which it is registered.
Arriving or leaving is in relation to the device to which the tag is registered. It has nothing to do with a hub or where a hub is located.
My tag is currently at a location with no hub and it reports leaving/arriving in relation to where my phone is located.
Of course.
But Samsung Find or the SmartThings app could populate the attributes (geolocation and so on). I think that was the initial idea but it was never implemented.
Could be. Based on other hardware devices like TVs, refrigerators, stoves, etc, it seems the onus is on those developers to create the features on the ST platform vs the developers of the ST app or hubs.
so you have a different UI because your tag is linked only to your phone? that is bizarre.
93 percent of smart things hasnt been implemented, completely totally, finally… …yet. lulz
How is your UI different than what I posted?
this really does add up to potential features for the Smart Tag 2.
derp, sorry that was a misquote, you and i have the same UI
Samsung Stations and certain Samsung TVs are supposed to be able to act as static ‘Offline finding devices’ that can detect tags and other devices just as phones can.
Stations (don’t know about TVs) are supposed to be able to generate notifications when tags come into and go out of range, presumably in a similar way to phones being able to notify you if up to two tags have been ‘left behind’. What form that notification takes I wouldn’t know, but it wouldn’t surprise me in the least if it is purely a Samsung thing and not exposed to SmartThings.
