[RELEASE] Official Monoprice Motion Sensor with Temperature, Tamper and Battery Device Handler

RBoy Apps is now an official partner of Monoprice.

This Device Handler is for the Monoprice Motion Sensor with Temperature v1 and v2 models (15271/10796)

image

This passive infrared (PIR) sensor detects motion and sends a Z-Wave® trigger signal to the network. It also detects changes in temperatures and reports the temperature to the network whenever a significant change has occurred. It also has a tamper-proof switch, which will trigger a Z-Wave signal when the cover is removed.

This device handler supports the Z-Wave and Z-Wave Plus devices. Support has also been added for v1 and v2 hub fingerprinting for easy identification and supports the Classic and new ST apps. Ideally install the Device Handler BEFORE pairing the device for easy setup.

This device handler supports the following features:

  1. Reading the following sensors
    • Motion
    • Temperature (auto convert to F or C depending upon your location)
    • Battery
    • Tamper
  2. Select the primary sensor to show on the dashboard (Temperature or Motion)
  3. Configure the following parameters:
    • Temperature offset (for correcting the temperature reported by the sensor)
    • Inactivity timeout (the number of minutes since the last motion was detected after which the motion sensor sends a no motion detected event)
    • Motion detection sensitivity (Z-Wave Plus devices)
    • Wake up interval
  4. Support for v1 and v2 hub fingerprinting for easy identification
  5. Request a manual update for the sensors and configuration (this is a delayed update at the next wake up)
  6. Easy to use configuration page with detailed explanations for all the parameters
  7. With the newer Z-Wave Plus devices, the device handler automatically sets the temperature scale F/C based on the hub configuration and also sets the temperature reporting threshold to 1 degree

NOTE:

  • After the configuration/preferences are updated, for the settings to take effect immediate, open the Motion sensor cover, wait 15 seconds and close it.
  • To request the manual update, please press the “Request Update” button, however this is a DELAYED update. The motion sensor is mostly in sleep mode to preserve battery. The next time it wakes up (every 4 hours or as configured), if the user had requested a manual update, it will fetch the latest sensor status, temperature, battery and also update the inactivity timeout configuration.
  • To force an immediate update for all configured settings, press the “Request Update” button and then open the device cover, wait for 15 seconds and close the cover. This forces the motion sensor to wake up and process the manual update request.
  • To force a temperature/motion/battery status update just open the cover, wait for 15 seconds and close the cover.

MONOPRICE JUMPER PINS: On this device you will see a few Jumper pins labelled Pet1 and Pet2. When using Pet1, Pet2 and Test modes it reduces the distance at which it picks up motion correspondingly:

Depending on the settings it will change the distance of motion detection, specifically PET1 does 8m-11m, PET2 does 5m-7m, and Test does 3m-4m

NOTE: This is different from the motion sensitivity option for the newer Z-Wave Plus devices which determine the level of motion within the “range” that must be detected to trigger a motion event.

Low Battery: If your battery falls below 35% consider replacing it. The device will stop sending updates if the battery falls below this level. So you won’t know if you battery has run out, the motion/no motion sensors / temperature sensor may get stuck as well and you may receive no updates.

Temperature Updates: For the older Z-Wave devices, according to the documentation, “Every rise or drop of 2 degrees will trigger a notification to the Hub”. If you aren’t seeing too many temperature updates it’s likely that your room temperature isn’t changing much so the device will send fewer/no temperature updates. According to the monoprice technical team the temperature updates are sent every 10 minutes (if there is a change of atleast 2 degrees).

For the newer Z-Wave Plus devices, the device supports two options 1 degree or 2 degree threshold to trigger a temperature reporting update. This device handler automatically sets the reporting threshold to 1 degree when the “Request Update” button is pressed. Make sure you open the device cover, wait for 15 seconds and close the cover for it to take effect.

More features to added, if you have any suggestions or ideas please feel free to ask and we’ll try to add it.

INCLUSION INSTRUCTIONS: It is recommended to install the Device Handler BEFORE paring the device for easier setup.

  1. If you are unsure about the device state exclude the device first otherwise it won’t pair (see below)
  2. To pair the device, Select Add New Device from the MarketPlace on your ST phone app.
  3. Then open the motion sensor device cover.
  4. Push a pin into the little hole behind the sensor and press it a couple of times.
  5. The close the cover after it shows up
  6. It should complete pairing within 30 seconds

image

NOTE: If you’re doing an inclusion after an exclusion, remove the battery first and then reinsert it and then follow the above instructions, otherwise the device doesn’t always pair up.

EXCLUSION INSTRUCTIONS: If you deleted the device without excluding it won’t pair up again until you exclude it. To exclude the monoprice sensor:

  1. Set the hub into exclude mode (log into the IDE → My Hub → View Utilities → Z-Wave Exclude.
  2. Place the sensor within 1 meter of the hub and push a pin into the little hole behind the sensor to initiate exclusion.

Monoprice Motion Sensor with Temperature, Tamper and Battery Device Handler - Version 02.04.06

  • Added support for the new ST app

So I now have 4 of these z-wave plus versions and was thinking maybe time to get the handler to adjust the sensitivity. What is the default sensitivity setting and how much more sensitive can I get this set with the handler? For comparison I have some PEQ, Bosch, and Iris sensors. Those are all zigbee and I hear z-wave will never be as fast, but the Monoprice seem to be particularly slow.

@RBoy

I have several of these monoprice pir motion sensors installed using this device handler, but they are all stuck on motion. it looks like the initial motion never cleared from the app ‘recently’ list. i have opened them and pressed the pinhole in the back but that didn’t help.

also, have several of the go control pir motion sensors using this same device handler and they are working correctly.

Sounds like there’s a communication issue with the devices and the hub if pushing the pin hole button doesn’t do anything.
You may want to try to exclude your device and pair them again with the hub. If you migrated from the Classic app it may help to delete the DTH and exclude and device and then set it up again. “Migration” sometimes creates issues with existing devices.

@RBoy

just noticed that for all sensors it says " * networkSecurityLevel: ZWAVE_S0_FAILED"

so it means it didnt complete the pairing process correctly.

I excluded and re-paired (right next to the hub) but its still showing the same security error.

then to rule out your dh, I commented out the fingerprints, excluded and re-paired and let it used the ‘built-in’ dh. motion is still stuck and still have the " * networkSecurityLevel: ZWAVE_S0_FAILED "

so, obviously its something wrong with the monoprice zwave plue motion and temp device as its happening to 7 of the same devices.

That usually means interference or device issues. Often doing a factory reset on the device and rebooting the hub helps with pairing problems.

ill try this

“Take off the cover and first hit the program button once to wake it up (it’s the pin hole on the bottom, not the tamper switch which is an obvious looking button on the circuit board). Then hitting the button once, hit it 10 more times. If it succeeded in resetting the LED will blink in rapid succession.”

and ide reboot the hub.

okay it appears that the problem lays with the security protocol S0 and the new S2.

@JDRoberts

is there anyone on the ST zwave device programming team that could look into this and help?

I’m just another customer, you would need to put in a support request.

heres something of interest. on a whim I excluded the device in the classic app and then included it in the new app using device brand zwave. while at first it said ‘checking status’ in the new app, it is working in both classic and new apps. it defaulted to “Z-Wave Plus Motion/Temp Sensor” although it works, it still says * networkSecurityLevel: ZWAVE_S0_FAILED

the next device paired to your dh, but its stuck on motion. ive tried to re-pair the device a couple of times, but it is stuck on motion.

at this point i just excluded the other devices since they were pairing and stuck on motion.

Monoprice Motion Sensor with Temperature, Tamper and Battery Device Handler - Version 03.00.00

  • Support for new ST app including primary sensor selection for dashboard

NOTES

  • The UI changes can take 24 hours to take effect due to platform caching. One way to force the cache to clear is to change the device handler to a “Z-Wave Device” and then back to this device handler from the IDE, then sign out of the ST mobile app and sign back in.
  • This can take some time after an initial pairing to communicate properly with the mesh. IT also helps to keep the sensor within 20ft of a buffering device/repeater for best performance and reliability.
