Onvis S4 matter thread firmware updates with android

Is it possible to update firmware on android? I can see there is an app called onvis home on ios but I think that’s for homekit.

Anyone?
I have just commissioned an Onvis s4 and can see it’s on firmware 1.1.0-442 (10010000)
I believe the latest version of it is 1.1.11 but there’s no native app for android and smarthings doesn’t see any update to apply.

Have you tried the check for firmware update command on the AWA?

That’s interesting since in the official Matter DCL (click on Model and search for S4) the only registered version is 1.1.0-315 (10010000) and the only Matter certificate at CSA is for that version.

In other words, looks like they’re not using the standard Matter firmware update mechanisms, they might not even be certified since they’re pushing updates reusing the same firmware version.

SmartThings can only update the firmware of selected devices like the Eve Energy, but they do publish the firmware and use standard update mechanisms.

If Onvis published the firmware, as a workaround you could run Home Assistant in a virtual machine, share the plug from SmartThings, update it, remove Home Assistant fabric if you don’t use it and call it a day.

I would either return it and get the Eve Energy, even if it’s pricier, or ask Onvis to publish their firmware so smart home platforms can update it without their own app.

All my UK plugs are on that release which seems to work fine.

Onvis say that if you have 1.1.0-315 it needs a critical update to 1.1.1 but have nothing to say about 1.1.0-442.

Yes I tried that. Nothing happened.

Just got a response from Onvis, support

“The firmware 1.1.0-442 is the latest firmware. 1.1.11 is the upgraded firmware from 1.1.0-315. The 1.1.0-442 is same with 1.1.11. So there’s no need to upgrade from 1.1.0-442 for the moment.

By the way, we will soon release a new firmware compatible with Matter 1.4 and Thread 1.4 soon. Hopefully it will be released in 1 month.”

That’s somewhat confusing as I’d have imagined 1.1.11 would be later than 1.1.0-442.

However the question now becomes how will I update to the latest version in a months time?

See above:

Also just spotted I got a reply on twitter too. So fingers crossed the update will land via SmartThings.

That looks good, it was a bit shady to have firmware versions with critical updates not certified and not available using the Matter update mechanism.

If that happens, you’ll be able to use the Home Assistant workaround explained before (maybe even Google Home or Alexa if you have a smart speaker) or encourage SmartThings to add that model to the selected list of devices that has been two years without any update.

Another update from Onvis via email, to be fair they have been very responsive :crossed_fingers:

Cheaper than Eve Energy, Matter 1.4, Thread 1.4, firmware updates via SmartThings?

Now I feel stupid that I bought a dozen Eve Energy plugs.

I bought it mostly to act as another repeater to improve mesh strength of thread network for 1 bulb which went offline sporadically.
Was on amazon spring sale 2 for £32 , so definitely cheaper than Eve.
Too soon to make a call on reliability yet and also whether firmware updates really deploy via SmartThings, but all ok so far , if you don’t need the energy monitoring.

They used to do a four pack for £65 on Amazon (it was actually two of the two packs in a plain box), and often discounted that by a further 15%. In November last year they were 20% off. So I’ve never paid as much as £32 for two for them. I wish they’d bring that four pack back.

I hope OTA firmware updates do come along as I feel a bit exposed without them.

Thats a decent price.
I’d looked at them for a few weeks and they had been £39.99 for 2

Now the ‘Spring Deal’ is over they have nominally reverted to £39.99. However you can still apply a 20% off ‘voucher’ for the next week by ticking a checkbox. The availability of the voucher does appear in the search listings but it is easy to overlook.

I hope the updated firmware puts in an appearance sooner rather than later.

I’ve just had to return a pair of plugs that were the first I’ve received with the 315 software, and if there are stocks that old around then it makes future purchases problematic. Given the obscene price of the Eve Energy and it being so laughably big it is barely usable in the UK, that doesn’t leave anything to purchase in the way of Matter Over Thread Smart Plugs.

Unfortunately I am also having a pair of plugs, coincidentally both running low power electric fans, going offline for no obvious reason. Not just SmartThings app offline either, they go offline to Google as well.

Open goal for LG if they price their smart plug realistically and they work.

I had that issue with some (old) Kasa plugs, the inductive load of the 33 W fans would make them crazy and restart and go offline for whatever reason. Plug in a 2000 W heater and they would be rock solid. I’m still using the same fan with other plugs without issues.

The Eve Energy is indeed expensive, I got one just because a electronics store had the last unit at half the price so decided to try it. Got to admit its Matter compliance is quite good, unlike, let’s say, Tapo which didn’t implement any of the optional features and is still not offering Matter 1.3 energy reporting.

Edit: The only thing I don’t like about the Eve Energy is the lack of a smart energy reporting, instead it just reports periodically. If you create an automation based on power, for instance if you have a TV plugged in and want to know when it is on, it can take up to 1 minute to report the change. I would have expected a report when it detects that meaningful change.

Ah, that’s annoying but helpful to me. I perhaps need to be thinking more along those lines.

I have three similar fans and all had shown the same issue though naturally one recovered to create inconsistency and perhaps mislead. I seem to remember one fan also briefly had an issue with a Zigbee plug and I had been rotating them around as I phased out IKEA and eWeLink plugs. Wish I could remember which Zigbee plug had the issue.

The eve plugs should go on sale for Prime day.
