New Smartthings V4 Hub released, do you already know about it?

Yes. I think you are right on this matter…

Without Z-Wave, I will not buy it.

Yup, no z-wave= not buying. I really hope they will support a zwave stick. But unless that happens, no way.

I’m in the same boat, I have almost 30 Z-Wave switches from @zooz. If there’s no support for a Z-Wave stick in the future or they don’t release a second hub that does have Z-Wave support. I will not be in the market for one of these. And unfortunately if my hubs do finally reach the end of their life cycle I will be probably moving to a different ecosystem.

I’m at the “Hard Limit” and switching to Homey Pro. Like most I have 20+ Z Wave devices. I’ll keep Smartthings for devices that Homey doesn’t yet support, and use it for SMS alerts and Webcast over Google speakers.

I can use Bud’s Smart Home solution to connect Homey Pro to Smartthings or Sharptools to control both systems.

SMS alerts via what mechanism ?

Notify someone in the “Then” option in routines.

Ah ok, that functionality must be region specific. It’s not an option for me.

I think it’s US only.

SMS is only available to those with US phone numbers

Quite a difference. I wonder what Amazon.co.uk will sell it at.

this hub allows you to manage all compatible devices through a single application – all without relying on the cloud

Is this just false advertisement from SmarterHome Shop or the app can really manage the V4 and their devices without the cloud? It’s not the first time they insist on local control and this time it’s too literal, although the text might not be from Aeotec.

That would be a feature worth upgrading from V3 if you don’t use z-wave devices.

Local-first operation: whenever possible, automations and controls run locally, independent of cloud connections

Groundbraking!

The hub being able to control things locally doesn’t mean the app will be able to control things locally, and there’s nothing in the matter specification that says that it has to. So it may just be a misunderstanding about the difference between routines that have already been set up and creating a new routine.

i’m not seeing anything in the official Aeotec descriptions that says the way the smartthings app communicates with the hub is going to change.

if somebody gets this hub and finds out for sure, one way or another, let us know.

Yeah, that accounts for the “most of the automations and controls will run offline” (Aeotec site) which is misleading if the only controls are the automations but, fine. There’s also a graph where they draw a cloud with a broken link and suggest it’s not needed but they forgot to draw the app needed to manage the hub, so legally fine too.

That shop however goes further, explicitly states managing devices through a single application without the cloud. It’s probably not a official text so we can just assume it’s a slip, huge but a slip.

I’ve always been curious about the bluetooth functionality since they mention onboarding and diagnostics which suggests the app can communicate with the hub via bluetooth. They don’t mention control, but technically would be possible in the future and this other Aeotec phrase would make more sense: “you can rely on your Smart Home, even when your whole home network is offline”.
