We’re excited to share that the Aeotec Smart Home Hub 2 is coming soon to Samsung.com for purchase. Some of you already noticed the launch in Korea (thanks for the great discussion on the post)—now it’s available for everyone in the U.S.
This hub is built for performance, connectivity, and ease of use, with local-first communication for fast, secure control (even offline). Key highlights include:
High Performance: A 900MHz CPU, 512MB RAM (2x previous), and 70% faster processing handle complex automations and large device networks smoothly.
Broad Connectivity: Supports Matter, Thread, and Zigbee 3.0, with Ethernet/Wi-Fi for network access and Bluetooth for quick setup. Connect up to 150 Zigbee devices and 1,000+ Matter-certified devices from 270+ brands. It is the first hub with Matter camera support.
Compact Design: Includes a wall-mount kit, USB-C power, and USB-A, fitting any space.
Quick Setup: Get started in under a minute with BLE and QR code onboarding for a hassle-free experience.
Safety & Efficiency: Home Monitor provides water/smoke alerts, air quality updates, and energy-saving routines. It also supports voice control with Bixby, Alexa, and Google Home.
SmartThings Pro compatibility: If you’re using or planning to use SmartThings in a B2B or large-scale environment (apartments, offices, etc.), Smart Home Hub 2 is designed to be fully compatible with SmartThings Pro.
We can’t wait to hear your thoughts and see how you use the Smart Home Hub 2 in your setups.
Thanks for the information.
Just one question, is ‘USB-A for expandability‘ the same as the V2 hub ‘USB-A for expandability’?
The V2 hub USB-A was only ever used as a power source.
The burning question on this forum is: is there a plan to support Z-Wave via a Z-Wave USB dongle?
Can you clarify on this? This means local network communication for app control of devices? Or is the same that we already have for other hubs: only local automations, app control depending on the cloud?
I asked about that local-first, offline control, etc. when it was announced and the reply was that the team didn’t have information.
The official website is even more explicit about supporting “automations and controls” while offline. Even has a diagram where they show the locally connected devices and a broken cloud link like if it’s not needed, but the app to control the hub and the devices doesn’t appear and if it’s local-first it should .
I still hope that’s a feature, maybe not yet ready but coming in the future, would be a selling point and put SmartThings on par with other platforms with local controls and automations like Apple Home, Aqara (M3), IKEA (Dirigera), Home Assistant, Hubitat, etc.
I received mine from Aeotec yesterday. Stuck on Firmware 57.00111 and other issues in AWA. Hardware Type displays “Other” when it should be V4_Hub and Hardware ID displays “FFFF”. I don’t seem to be able to soft or hard reset the hub - no blinking or solid yellow lights.
over 27 hours later and I have not received 58.x. I don’t even have the ability to choose between Public and Beta firmware. That field does not show in AWA under the hub.
No prompt to update unlike the V3 I added last week. Using Ethernet. Another odd thing, I tried a few times with the new V4 and each time, it gets added as a secondary in a hub group so I am never prompted on that.
And many of us here on the SmartThings forum are disappointed there is no support for the Z-Wave protocol. I won’t belabor the point–plenty is being said elsewhere on the forum–but can you give us any clue whether it is technically possible or exists anywhere on the SmartThings roadmap for the product, if there might ever be support for plugging a Z-Wave 800LR USB device into the hub to plug this hole?
Much appreciate any feedback you feel you can supply…
I think this is the intended behaviour for any group eligible hub that is added, and has been for some time. I don’t recall it ever having happened for me with V3 hubs but perhaps it did and I didn’t mind at the time. I certainly would mind if it happened now.
I’ll belabor the point - without native Z-Wave support this is a total non-starter for me. With the amount of Z-Wave devices that already exist in peoples homes (certainly mine) this seems like a silly decision.
We’ve discussed this at length in the other thread about the new hub, but the short answer is that Samsung already made this decision a couple of years ago when they introduced the SmartThings Station (which also didn’t have Z wave).
The publicly announced roadmap for smartthings includes support for matter over Wi-Fi, matter over thread, and Zigbee. No Zwave.
I’m not saying that it’s impossible that they’ll ever add some kind of dongle option, but they seem comfortable with the business decision they’ve already made, and whatever their business experience was with the station, it didn’t cause them to change their mind for this new one. So I think that ship has sailed.
And, honestly, as a user with a house full of Z-Wave, I’m not that concerned about it. As my Z-Wave devices have been dying, I’m replacing them with Matter over Thread switches/dimmers/outlets and connecting them to my ST Station. The Plume Wi-Fi in my existing hub already bit the bullet after 6 years and I’ve moved on to Eero. Change is the only constant.
And I’m aware of the history. I’m sure they are comfortable with their decision. They will move forward based on that decision without me…not that that makes any difference…LOL. I’ll just keep my fingers crossed that my v3 SmartThings hub lasts a good long time.
I went with Smartthings 10 years ago because it supported zwave, wifi and zigbee. I have almost 100 devices scattered over a large area and many are battery operated. Zwave-LR looks even better. I also loved that you could make custom programs. Now with the “new smartthings” I have to use “Gentle Wakeup” as a beta in labs. It’s been beta for years and it still has no option to only run when I am home.
If everything is going Matter and they won’t support zwave, what do we need smartthings for?
From Samsung’s perspective, as the app to run their smart televisions and smart appliances, and include the ability to add matter devices to that set-up.
While most people in this forum do have a hub, the vast majority of SmartThings users, well over 90%, do not. That’s the Samsung target audience, and their typical customer, so Zwave users are really just a blip for them.
As for what we as power users need smartthings for, judging from people who’ve added hubitat or home assistant to their setups but are still also working with smartthings, the answer appears to mostly be a family-friendly app.
