New Smartthings V4 Hub released, do you already know about it?

There is the question over how much heavy lifting the words ‘compatible devices’ are doing. If they were just considering Matter devices then there is the Home API that came out a while back to allow third-party Matter apps. I can’t remember the architecture of that.

“The SmartThings Home API allows you to directly use the SmartThings Cloud in your application”.

There’s a graph too, there’s no local communication with the hub, only through the cloud.

I always thought the local link between the Home Service app and Hub Core looked interesting, and that it would be odd if third-party client apps were being offered a service the ST app wouldn’t also be able to access in time.

Totally missed that line  It is interesting indeed

This year’s SDC is going to be interesting.

Can you tell me the source of this information?

Grok cited 67 sources - too many to list here.

It’s kind of vague anyway. Let’s wait and see what comes up at the SDC.

Does this reply have even a Tenuous link to Samsung (Aeotec v4) SmartThings hub ?

I have many Z-Wave items, they are NOT legacy. They are brand new designs. I will be purchasing additional Z-Wave devices. I will skip the V4 and wait for the V5 in order to get Z-Wave compatibility.

And why would you think a V5 would have Z-wave?

No current generation ST hub supports Z-Wave and I doubt they will in the future. The ST Station and now the Aeotec Smart Home Hub 2 standalone hubs don’t have Z-Wave. And none of the appliance or TV integrated hubs support Z-Wave (with or without a dongle). As others have suggested, if you need an updated smart home hub with Z-Wave, it’s going to have to something other than ST/Aeotec.

Currently, Amazon sells over 500 Z-Wave devices. Other companies outside of Amazon sell hundreds also.

From the Aeotec website today.

Aeotec Smart Home Hub. With amazing integration with most propminent technologies such as Matter, Zigbee, Z-Wave, Thread, and Wi-Fi, Simply connect it to your existing home network, and you’re ready to go.

Just yesterday, I ordered a NEW V3 hub from them, fully Z-Wave compatible.

>> And none of the appliance or TV integrated hubs <<

I avoid Samsung appliances like the plague. I’m not a fan of their television either. I have zero interest in controlling appliances. My televisions are handled through a Control4 system that I have. I understand that Samsung is moving away from Z–Wave. Their version 5 unit will probably bring it back.

Why Z-Wave is “MUST HAVE”.

Reliability & Range: Z-Wave uses a sub-GHz radio frequency, which is generally less crowded than the 2.4 GHz bands used by Wi-Fi and Zigbee, leading to less interference and better signal penetration through walls.

Mesh Networking: Z-Wave forms a mesh network where devices act as signal repeaters, extending the network’s range and creating a self-healing network that can reroute messages if one device fails.

Interoperability & Certification: The Z-Wave Alliance certifies every Z-Wave device, ensuring that devices from different manufacturers are compatible with each other.

Our organization recently purchased a high-quality automatic water shut off valve for about $600, they ONLY utilize Z-Wave.

Obviously, everyone’s needs are different. Many people can get along just fine without Z-Wave. I am not in that group. There are other options to maintain control of Z-Wave devices. When the time comes, I’ll have to make the jump.

I am not too worried. The Z-wave Alliance is embracing Matter fully and I believe it won’t be too long before we see commercial Z-wave Matter bridging solutions similar to what HA already offers. That would give us the choice to integrate Z-wave devices to any platform of choice including SmartThings.

Thanks for this! I’m heavily invested in z-wave with about 40 of my 60 smart devices using it. I’ve been getting concerned about my SmartThings V2/2015 hub either failing or getting dropped from support.

Just ordered the Aeotec V3 hub from the Aeotec site!

Just FYI, $150 for the hub plus $15 for 10% tariff. Plus applicable taxes.
