Looks like the camera is on all the time. This is my internet data uses from my cable company. My Samsung TV was alway the highest used because I only steam TV via YouTube TV but now Nest is …
what I did was create a virtual momentary button in SmartThings which shows up in Alexa natively as a contact sensor. I then setup a ST automation So when the doorbell goes off, an automation in SmartThings simultaneously presses the momentary button and then you can get Alexa to run a routine based on the changed state.
The routine is announce and if you also have an echo show, you can use the “customised” Alexa routine action and type “show me the front door”.
Works perfectly for me! Let me know if you need any further details or help.
that sounds awesome…ill try to figure it out but I suck out this stuff I’ll let ya know how I make out…Thank you
I got it working, Thank you again for posting this. I also put that door bell sound to play on the echo shows I have with the “someone at the front door”
Great to hear. Yes I did the same. Doorbell sound. Announce “somebody is at the front door” and then also auto show on echo screen.
Now it works like the ring doorbell
I had the “show me the front door” set up also but the video from the Nest Hello does not go away unless I say “Alexa Home” so if I’m not home will it just sit on that screen all day? Did you do something in settings to make it on show the video for a couple of mins?
Alexa by default will end the stream after a few minutes (I’m not sure on exact length) but viewing any cameras it won’t do an endless stream… if you want to set your own times maybe in your routine you could add a “wait” of X mins and then a “customised” command of “home” ?
Is anyone else having an issue with the doorbell not being able to trigger a ST automation? Motion detected or being pressed doesn’t do anything. Tried un-linking & re-linking - still nothing.
Hey I was trying to make this work tonight and can’t find a virtual momentary button when creating a device in the SmartThings IDE. And everything else I’ve tried Alexa sees as a switch. So any additional detail you can provide would be helpful.
Have you been able to find any additional information on this? I’m also looking to run something that’s dependent on the state of the system (ceiling fan). Frustrating to get something not quite ready for prime time.
this will help
I don’t understand everything you said above, but it sounds brilliant! i would LOVE my shows to do their own thing, and then display the doorbell when appropriate - i’ll have to read this a few times, thanks!
Here’s what I think is the BEST reason to integrate Nest with ST (at least my thermostats)
I have various leak sensors - my biggest issues in the past were condensate pumps in the summer, but i also have a HVAC humidifier (that drains to the condensate pump)
so, set up a leak sensor, and if it triggers, BOOM - turn nest to off - DONE! I recently had bought 3 z wave toggle switches to replace the HVAC emergency off switch - they’re going back (so, roughly $60 in savings) plus this will work with the low voltage wiring on my already installed nests, versus possibly improperly working with the switches that control the HVAC versus being for lights. I would love motion sensing from the thermostats, but not a major need. I was reading about the doorbell stuff on the show, and if i can get that to work properly, may encourage me to buy yet more echo shows. Thanks all!
Is the NEST - ST integration only for USA?
I’m in Canada and not able to see my NEST doorbell or any NEST branded devices in the ST app.
Hi - can i impose on you to share how you go the nest doorbell to go ding dong on your shows, and to show on your echo shows? i’m as far as having a virtual switch on smart things that alexa recognizes - then i’m stuck. I’m not seeing echo’s etc. on control devices, i have to be doing something wrong. Many thanks!
when you go and try adds a devices and search for Nest nothing is showing up?
you try here for the info
Many thanks, “Bob A Booey” (Howard Stern, right?)
I actually used that smartcave page last night and that’s how i got as far (or as little) as i did already.
i have my nest in smart things, and in fact, my water sensors use nest to shut off the HVAC, but i stalled on the alexa side. sorry to be thick, and maybe this will help other folks as well.
in alexa routines (which i’d never even noticed before!) i have voice, schedule, smart home, location, alarms, echo button, and guard - smart home has a few motion sensors, and the virtual switch - but there’s no nest hello doorbell showing (my doorbell does show up in smart things) - i’m seeing it in alexa as a camera, but no where under routines. thanks again for any help!
