So for as long as I’ve been using Android Auto which is connected wirelessly from my phone (Galaxy S23) to my car ('24 VW Golf), every time I leave my neighborhood, Android Auto will briefly disconnect and then reconnect. It’s not a big deal, but it’s definitely annoying.
It happens every single time around the same location and distance from my home.
I’ve narrowed it down to a SmartThings automation that runs when my phone leaves a particular radius from my house. If I disable that automation, the disconnect doesn’t happen. If I connect with a wire, the disconnect doesn’t happen.
Any ideas on how to fix this while still using wireless Android Auto? Thanks.
The SmartThings app should be handling the geofence exit in the same way whether there is an automation enabled or not, and the automation doesn’t run on the phone anyway.
What does the automation do? Does making it do something different change anything?
I had this happen with my 2018 Mercedes, but not due to location based routines. Do you happen to have any app the manages a gate, like ones at entrances into your neighborhood or even your driveway?
My wireless Android setup is via an AAWireless adapter, and it conflicted with the Alta Open app we use for a gate. I had to change the wifi channel of the adapter, and bingo the problem went away.
Your newer car may not be configurable like that, but if you have a conflicting app perhaps the app can be tweaked. Of course your situation could be completely different, but i thought I’d still chime in with what I’ve experienced.
EDIT: Updated to reflect it was the adapter’s wifi channel that was changed.
You’re not going to believe this… But the gate into my community uses an app… And that app is Avigilon Alta! Of all the solutions I could have predicted, this was not one of them!
I haven’t actually figured out how to fix this yet since it’s not configurable like yours is, but it at least gives me a starting point.
@DavidAg02 , one quick update! It was the wifi channel on the adapter that AAWIRELESS support had me change. I just double-checked their email, so maybe that helps a little better.
“Please open the AAWireless app and go to device settings (the wheel icon in the top right) and tap on “Advanced Settings”. Scroll down, locate and tap on “Wi-Fi settings”. Here, change the “Wi-Fi channel”. Please make sure to manually test with every Wi-Fi channel available. This should remove any interference related issues.”
I wonder if a solution in your case could be to get someone to adjust the Alta gate controller channel, but then again that’s probably something your HOA would need to get involved with.
Although if you think about it, others in your neighborhood are likely to be having the same issue that use wireless Android Auto. Perhaps that could be enough of a business case to look into this. It’s a longshot, but you never know…
