GE 12724 Dimmer Won't Turn On from SmartThings

I just installed a GE 12724 dimmer, and I can’t get it to turn on from SmartThings. The physical switch will turn it on and then I can dim or turn off from SmartThings. Yes, I installed the neutral wire. I’ve tried removing and re-adding it as well as switching off the breaker.

Anyone have any ideas or should I just return this and look for another brand switch? Any recommendations?

Try a Z-wave network repair?

I tried that too. No such luck

Hi @Ryan_Wiley, what does the Event Log for the device show? Also, have you observed the Live Log to see what real time events are being communicated with the switch?

Also, check to make sure the right device handler got picked up.

I have a ton of these working great in ST, so don’t go returning this yet.

Did the device pair to you ST hub? If not then reset your hub either physically in the back of hub or using IDE, then go into my locations click the cog wheel scroll down where you see your hubs name & click the +. Then go into Zwave utilities click on include/exclude hub, after that completes click on general device exclude then go over to your switch & power on & off the switch waiting 5 sec in between do this 4 times & your hub should find it. When ready to pair it you must click in on & off 4 times waiting 5 sec between. BUT YOUR HUB MUST BE SEARCHING FOR IT BEFORE PUSHING ANY BUTTONS ON THE SWITCH.

In the event log for the device I see the ON command being sent, but the device does not report anything back. Here’s the live log:

Also, I tried what Kevin suggested, but that didn’t work either

Ok so I can turn it on by turning it on then setting the dimmer level. Sometimes it won’t turn off now too though. Here are some device event logs:

Hi @Ryan_Wiley, like John I also have tons of these and they all work great, so it isn’t a brand compatibility issue. You could have one with a faulty radio unit if the device works as it should using manual controls. The other thing I would check is whether it paired as the right device type. Sometimes pairing picks the wrong type and you have to manually change it. Log into the IDE, go to Devices, edit the device you added and check the type. It should be Dimmer Switch. Why they didn’t name this type following the same naming convention of the other Z-Wave types such as Z-Wave Switch is beyond me. But anyway, make sure that is set. You could also use the custom one talked about in this thread. It isn’t needed as much these days due to the app redesign but I still like seeing pictures instead of icons on my buttons.

This happened to me as well with two of those exact dimmers. Only thing that fixed it was removing it from the z-wave network and re-adding it. Once I did that, it worked perfectly and has had no problems since.

BTW, when I removed the switches, the ST app told me an “unrecognized device” was removed. I then had to Force Delete the switch from the hub. I think somehow the switch’s unique identifier became disassociated with it in the hub.

The device type is Dimmer Switch.

I’ve already tried removing and re-adding it. Like you I wasn’t able to remove it like normal. I had to force delete it. I’ve tried this several times, but that hasn’t worked. I think I’m going to send this one back to Amazon and get a new one.

Ryan how are you trying to turn on this light? When I turn mine on using my iPhone going into things I don’t get a live report I have to go into device & list event for that device. See below.

Are you trying to use an automation to turn this light on? And yes sometimes these switches can be a real pain connecting to a new network, it took me 30 min to unpair it from my ADT pulse & repair them to my ST Hub cause they were being Aholes.

It does sound defective. Once I removed re-added mine they’re working fine. Sorry to hear. Such a pain to have to return and reinstall.

I installed the replacement dimmer today, and it works great. The old one must have been defective.
