I bought this and gave up. I could not get the app to work properly on my smart phone. In the end I went for an outdoor VoIP intercom. The branded ones which seem to be more reliable, like 2N, CyberData, Commend. They are considerably more money, but they are built to last.
I hooked up a single call button outdoor voip intercom. POE to my local router. We then bought a Asterisk based hosted (cloud) based VoIP line for like £5 a month. From the GUI of my hosted Phone system i can log on remotely and change the intercoms call path. I could trigger the door remotely with the use of Out of band DTMF signalling (RFC2833).
I may revisit this if and when it offers more reliability
I noticed the Chime for the Motion detection changed. It’s not bad, (sounds like a crystal electronic sound), but it’s too soft now. It would be nice if this volume could be changed, or better yet, a custom sound.
Let me guess. iPad/iPhone?? I cant even hear it unless I hold the device to my ear. On the android you can set which sound you want by changing the “Notification” sound. That does not work nor change anything on the apple devices.
It will eventually charge, for me so far no problems at all , the ring chime does not bother me as much. Today I had some delayed notifications like someone steps on the door and the chime comes in a few seconds later , a router reboot fixed that one. My ring’s battery shows up at a 100% , now for that smartthings integration
Well my video cloud trial just ended.
Functionality is severely limited without the cloud service as I can no longer see the activity at the door that I missed during work. I wish they could at least allow us to see the last 24 hours or so for those who opt not to subscribe for service. This almost forces us to subscribe.
Till date I’m still having issues with my Ring Doorbell. Hope someone here can help me out.
I’m living in Singapore and I’m using Singtel Fibre Broadband 500mbps plan. I’ve just bought a new Asus RT-AC3200 and place it as my main router. Ring have no issues connecting to my WiFi and notification to my iPhone and android phones are fine. This is where the problem is.
When I’m at home connecting to my Asus WiFi and Ring doorbell rings, my phone opens up the notification. I open the app and Ring comes to the video screen for you to choose Accept or Decline the call. There’s no video and it keeps having that buffering thing showing on the screen. But when I’m on my phone’s service provider 4G or 3G, the video shows.
Initially I thought there’s something wrong with my router, but I have another Asus RT-AC87U and it is also showing this problem. The video just don’t show before you accept or decline the call. Still having the buffering circle on the screen while my phone is connected to the same network.
But when I changed to Aztech FG7003GRV router and my phone and Ring doorbell is connected to the same network, the video works while I’m at home.
Why so? I have tried opening ports on my Asus router but it still don’t work at all. Did I open the wrong ports? Ring Doorbell technicians just can’t provide me a solution and they have already replaced my previous Ring to a new one. The problem still exist. All Asus routers I have tried as I have 3 different Asus routers at home and none of them worked.
Can someone please please tell me what is going on? I don’t want to change my Asus router to another brand just because of Ring Doorbell… From the older models to the latest models of Asus routers I have tried it all…
Odd… I have Asus routers (N66U, AC66U and N12). Ring accept, display video work just fine on my iPhone 5. (still on iOs 7.1.2) and my iPad (iOs 8.3) . I currently have the N12 (cheapest Asus router) sitting (inside wall) about 4 feet from my Ring doorbell and my signal strength is about -47db. Before I hookup this router the Ring was connected to the AC66U with signal strength as low as -68db. Even then, I had no problems accepting a call and having video appear instantly.
What FW version are yu using on your AC87 ASUS router? Given Ring works fine when connected to your cell network as well when connected to a wifi from another router brand I would take a look at you FW. Not familiar with the AC3200 so I cant be sure this will work but you might want to check out Merlin FW http://www.snbforums.com/forums/asuswrt-merlin.42/ Merlin FW will work for your AC87. This FW is ASUS FW with some cool modifications. The latest version is 378.54 but that is just out. I’d try 378.53 first. Alternatively, you can try the latest FW by ASUS.
I had exact same problem - this weather strip was too big to let device lock in place. I’ve ended up removing most/some portion of strip or moving it more to inside but I don’t remember what exactly… I’ll have to charge it soon (after month of use 18%) so I can look what I’ve done.
I took it off as well but it still was hard to mount. Sine then I have removed it several times each time it is not quite as difficult to remount. Now that it’s installed, hard wired, I hope it will be a while before I have to remove it again
@cdikland I’m using the AC3200 now. FW is the latest 3.0.0.4.378_4980. As for AC87, the FW is latest at 3.0.0.4.378_5134. AC87 is being used as an AP in my room so I’m not using that as the main router.
May I know if you open any ports on your Asus router for Ring? If so, what are the ports?
I will try the Merlin 378.54-1 for my AC3200 and see how it goes.
No ports open for Ring. Actually, Ring was one of the easiest things to setup. Couple of questions for you.
Does the Aztech replace the AC3200 (i.e your main router) after which your problem is gone? If so, can you connect the ASUS ac82 to the Aztech as an AP then connect the Ring to it?
Are you able to check the Aztech 2.4ghz SSID setting and compare them to that of the ASUS 2.4 SSID? (i.e is the wifi channel used on the aztech the same as that of the ASUS?)
Is the SSID you connect the Ring to the same on the Aztech as the ASUS routers? (freq, naming, etc)?
On the ASUS, do you name your 2,4ghz SSID the same as your 5,0ghz? If so, change it,
Is the 2.4 SSID name on your main router the same as that of your AP? The only difference being, the Control Channel. (For my Region, 2.4 ghz wireless has a channel range 1-11. The optimal channels to use are 1,6 or 11. In your part of the world that range may differ)
If you plan on installing Merlin FW you may need to do a factory reset on the router although if that router already has the latest ASUS FW that is unlikely.
Below are my wifi setting on an ASUS AP router. Note that I use Merlin FW so the screens may/will be slightly different
Hey guys, just picked up one of these, expected to arrive tomorrow. Will be installing it on a stone front on a new house in July.
Is this the “unofficial” official forum for Ring as I don’t seem to see a dedicated forum elsewhere for it, which seems odd!
In any event, I plan on hooking it up directly to the power on my existing doorbell. Can someone confirm that the existing doorbell chime will also ring when the Ring is pressed if I hook it up directly?
Yes the existing doorbell should ring when the Ring button is pressed and hooked up by hardwire.
I have the Ring, but don’t have the SmartThings controller, but since Ring doesn’t have their own forum, I have found this forum to be helpful.
There is also a new Reddit forum that i set up at http://www.reddit.com/r/ringdoorbell
that people can use which might be easier to track messages
My Ring is hardwired and pressing the button will cause my existing doorbell to chime. I had to “mute” that feature as the chime made my dogs go insane (2 standard poodles howling at the front door) making it impossible to answer the Ring with the mobile app
Based on the initial (at times somewhat negative) feedback of this product posted here I must say the Ring has exceeded my expectations. Its current shortcomings are quite bearable for what I need. In particular, motion detection. Setting it to max range (30feet) will cause trigger numerous events well beyond the expected range (cars in particular). Setting it to a smaller range causes a significant delay in report. For instance, a range of 15 ft and the person is already at your door (or inside) by the time the motion is reported. Hence, you will have lots of “motion” videos with no apparent motion visible. Motion detection in general works ok on overcast days but flaky on bright sunny days.
If you hardwire it be sure it is 100% charged. Your transformer should (trickle) charge it but when I mounted mine at 72% charge it never went beyond 86%. I removed it and charged it via usb. Now it is at 100 and stays there.
Probably cause there is no API yet, and the product has a sorted history. If you you send one to my home address I’ll get to work on it as soon as I get it setup.
Who needs an API? Now I’m intrigued… I wonder how much integration we could accomplish with a bit of ingenuity. Unfortunately, with their history spending $200 on the thing has never interested me a bit.
I have to tell you I have had mine for about 6 weeks now. Other than getting the zones adjusted correctly, I love it. Would love to see it integrated with ST
