DoorBot v2.0 - now called ring video doorbell

As far as I know that code no longer exists and was originally intended for owners of the original Ring v1.0. If I am wrong I’d like to know. I’d consider it for $99.00 but not more. At least not at this time.

According to the Ring.com website, the Complimentary Cloud recording that we have been getting will end April 1, 2015 and the company states that they will begin charging for the recording service.

I personally think that Ring.com should keep a “free” basic service, (like Arlo has), and offer upgraded pay cloud service to hold recordings for longer amount of time and space. Hopefully the company is looking at this thread and getting some user feedback.

I just ordered mine this weekend, there was a $20 off but no longer the $99 deal. Recall the version they were selling during the $99 deal has since been changed I doubt you will see that deal again.

As for cloud recording, honestly this is a money grab, they are trying to create a revenue stream for themselves. I will be interested to see what they charge but I know we pay like $0.0001 per GB of storage for archiving and about $0.01 per gig to serve it up on the Rackspace CDN so there is no reason this should be more than like $10 a year for 50gb or so of storage.

Received a replacement unit today. Found out that if the existing Ring is out of range (or in my case dead battery) the Android app doesn’t allow you to add or remove any devices. Once I charged the faulty device the options were once again available.

Now I am back to the original problem with the new unit, 45+ seconds between pressing the Ring button and getting a notification.

I suspect I will be shipping both units back with the prepaid waybill.

Can’t say I didn’t try!

Haven’t seen much news about this product lately. Has it and/or the latest FW updates improved this doorbell beyond the point where it is now ready for prime time or is the consensus that this product is still in beta?

FWIW, an informal study among people I know has determined that if the Ring is near a window, it appears to work much better, probably because the WiFi signal can get through better. I had one friend who moved his doorbell from one side of the door to the other to take advantage of this. And if your house is brick, but no window, more problems than if the walls are wood. All makes sense, of course…

“All home automation is local.”

It’s easy to test WiFi signal strength at the place where you want to put the Ring, of course–just hold any WiFi device that shows bar strength in that place and see what you get. You may find that moving it just a foot or two will find a better location.

The following has a nice visual of what materials block WiFi signal:

http://www.liveport.com/wifi-signal-attenuation

“While our recording function was in beta we enabled all customers to access it for free. The service will be turning into a paid service starting on June 1st.”

This is going to kill 75% of my functionality for my Ring doorbell.

I have no plan on paying more for a subscription to this, and wish that they would adopt the same concept as the Arlo where only a certain amount of storage is free (to at least view the last couple days worth of video), until it is deleted.

This is because 1/2 of the time I either don’t have time to view my Ring app when someone is there at the door, or because the Push notification just sometimes doesn’t go through. This means that if I no longer have cloud recording access, my Ring is now just a plain old Doorbell.

Hope Ring staff is reading this forum, to consider 24 hrs of temporary cloud storage or at least something for those who do not wish to purchase a subscription to the cloud service, so we could catch up with the recordings that we missed during the day.

Yeah I had my router setup to even prioritize the ring and it just was beyond flakey…I had to end up buying a new access point, hardwire it down to the router, and position it within 10 feet of the brick outer wall to get a better signal.

I wish…

  1. They allowed us to run ethernet to it (I’ll even buy a new one to take advantage of this)
  2. They showed the rings wifi signal strength from the app
  3. It didn’t power-off…I find there’s lag between it firing back up and needing to re-connect to my network.

It’s $30 a YEAR ($2.5 a MONTH)…it goes to help support their efforts to make the thing better and deliver more firmware and app enhancements…I’m cool with it.

I wouldn’t complain though if there was a freemium model where paying users get something extra (I need another Ring for my side door, but don’t need recording)

My Ring which has been working fine for last couple months, just stopped working today.
Did anyone else have this issue? I’m hoping it’s a connection problem as sometimes I see the white ring light flash on, but this is not good.

I was able to fix my Ring … for now.
Removed it from the back plate, and found one of the metal connectors slightly bent.
Tried to bend it back straight, but it won’t stay straight. Reconnected, and so far it’s working again, but
I have a feeling that this is going to happen again.
Here is a pic of the bent connector:

I got a new one and fixed it just 2 days ago. So far its been ok , no network issues , prompt notifications on iOS when there is motion or someone rings the bell. Slight delay with the video but its not that bad. The grey half screen effect is present when viewing videos or sometimes when viewing a stream at night but it does not persist for the life of the video. The cloud recording is going to be paid , too bad it was good and free when it lasted but I might go for it as its invaluable to have that stream in case one cannot answer the ring in time. The only wierd thing for me is the battery. I do not think I charged it fully the first day but it was 60% when I connected it and have hardwired the connection but the battery never charges to 100% it stays between 50-60%. So far so good. Most people have complained after 5-6 days of usage . Using firmware version 1.3.59 with light alerts and all zones enabled for motion and slightly more than 5ft for range.

Now if only this was smartthings integrated. I know from the old posts something was promised early 2015 …

My Ring was delivered and installed yesterday without any serious issues except one.
I hardwired the Ring and mounted the backplate on a brick wall at my front door. Now it came time to “hang” the Ring on the mounting plate. In the instructional video, the guy simply pushes the Ring onto the mount and it almost effortlessly slides down and locks into place. There was no way I could get the Ring to lock/slide down into place even though all 6 tabs on the plate were inserted into the Ring slots and both security set screws on the bottom of the Ring were fully extracted.

With no way to finish mounting it, I removed the wires then the back-plate from the wall and tried joining/locking the plate to the Ring. Absolutely no way would this plate slide up (or the Ring slide down) to lock into place. I ended up removing a plastic/rubber seal that was on the edge of the plate and only then with great effort was I able to lock the two units together. I remounted the back-plate on the wall and after 15 minutes of frustration and cursing the ring finally locked into place. I tightened the two little set screws on the bottom of the Ring to secure it into place. All I can say is that I hope I never have to remove it. Has anyone else had any problem with this?? Any ideas on how to simplify this step??

nope I just installed by ring a week ago and the ring locked on the plate (slide and lock) easily . Perhaps you have a defective piece ?

So you had the same results as that shown on the installation video. Well, there is something awry with mine alright. Probably contact support so they have a record of the problem. For now that it is mounted I will leave it. Glad it is hardwired. Wouldnt want to go through this everytime I need to recharge the battery. :fearful:

yup same as the install video. I was so excited to put it on that I did not charge its battery completely, it took around 4 days but eventually reached 100% as have it wired into my old bell. I would best get it returned and fixed when you can and get a better unit

This is a great thread for us Ring owners that has been very helpful.
Since Ring does not have their own message board/forum, we could also use
the Reddit subreddit: ringdoorbell
(http://www.reddit.com/r/ringdoorbell) to post messages about the Ring doorbell.
(which is easier than flipping through 197pages of a single thread)

I had considered returning it but weighed my options. Repack it, drive it from Canada back to the UPS store in the US to which Amazon.com shipped it. Pay for the bridge toll (twice) and, worst of all, fill out a customs form to reclaim the taxes I paid when I brought it across from the US a few days ago. :anguished: Alternatively, live with the inconvenience and frustration of having to remount it in the off chance I had to remove it from its current location. Obviously, if I had to remove it each time I needed to charge it this would be a no-brainer. I wonder though, now that it is hard-wired how often, if ever, I have to remove it.

As for the battery level, I had to same as yourself. My Ring, however, was supposedly fully charged (the light became solid after several hours of USB charging) when I mounted it. Once I powered the transformer back up the Ring showed 72% charged. Currently (after 2 days) it is at 88%. Don’t really care how long it takes as long as it is going up aor staying the same

Enabled the motion detector yesterday. While it is working the Range setting don’t seem to give me the expected results. I read here about people reporting problems with these settings such as a 5’ range still detects 30’ distant motion which is opposite of what I get. I initially set the smallest range possible and all was good. I tried to increase the range but it didnt appear to make any difference. I set the range to Max yet the sensor only seems to trip when I am 5-8 feet away.

UPDATE: I think my ‘problem’ had more to do with frequency of notifications. I tried the motion sensor again this AM and it triggered right at the point where I expected/wanted it to

Day 6 and my battery has never fully charged while hard-wired to the transformer. Seems stuck at 86% although It did once reach 88%. It went down because I would periodically turn off the transformer to avoid the old doorbell from ringing while I was “playing” with the Ring.
