Can't connect Cree Connect (Zigbee) Bulbs

I took 6 bulbs that I had which were not installed and put them into paring mode. In spite of being in pairing mode none of them would connect to the hub. Cree stopped selling these bulbs about 2 years ago, but that shouldn’t prevent connecting. I have many others which are already connected and are working fine.

I’m beginning to think the problem is my V3Hub. It works for devices that are already connected but won’t find or connect anything that isn’t. I need to figure out a way to test it without losing everything that is currently connected.

Yes I put them in pairing mode.

@JoeK and @Mark3 , my comments probably don’t help, but those Cree bulbs are junk, and they are horrible Zigbee mesh routers (since they can be turned off and screw up your routings). I had 12 of them and always, ALWAYS, struggled getting them to reset and join. They are POS devices, and in my opinion, and if you can, find alternatives. It’s not your hub.

For me, I replaced all my Cree bulbs with Singled and have never regretted it. These bulbs are reliable, and they are not mesh routers, which means if someone manually turns off a bulb that your Zigbee mesh doesn’t go crazy.

@JoeK For what it’s worth, I run the V2 hub

@johnconstantelo Yep - I was eyeing the Sengled bulbs you mentioned.

Thanks for everyone’s feedback!

Hi Joe,

Figured I would jump in here, as I am having similar issues with the CREE zigbee bulbs. I didn’t have any power issues, but I had my network rack powered down as I was adding some new switches and moving everything into a new rack (long time IT guy), for several hours. When I powered everything back up, that’s when I started having issues with the CREE bulbs.

I tried doing a soft reset on my V2 hub several times and was finally able to get most of them back up. I still have one that shows offline, and two others, that I did reset and tried to re-scan and add back, that it doesn’t see.

I do NOT agree with the assessment that they are junk. I have had CREE zigbee bulbs for 8 years and they have always worked flawlessly and paired immediately when scanned. It is only after Smartthings moved to the new driver platform that the issues started.

I am still playing around with getting the three remaining bulbs connected, there have been a few different posts with people sharing what they tried and got them re-connected.

I was having problems with those bulbs long before Smartthings went through their platform migration. One of my biggest complaints with Cree bulbs are that they are routers in the Zigbee mesh. In my opinion, a device that is a router in a mesh should not be able to be manually powered off and cause mesh problems.

I have been using them for around 5 years and this is the 1st problem I have had.

Right after the SmartThings problem of not recognizing the Cree bulbs during a re-pairing process, I just happened to purchase a new Hubitat C-7 for $20. So I figured it would be an interesting test to see if the Cree bulbs would pair up w/Hubitat. They sure did, no problem.

A little frustrated with the SmartThings and repairing older devices right now, not the first time this has happened.

Yes it is frustrating because they use to pop right up during discovery and were added immediately. Smartthings has totally screwed up the Zigbee stuff and they can’t even be bothered to respond. I think I am going to try one of the Hubitat C-7s for $20.

I was curious to see if these bulbs would work with Smartthings… https://www.amazon.com/Sengled-Daylight-Equivalent-Assistant-SmartThings/dp/B078HHWQWG?ref_=ast_sto_dp&th=1 NOPE. First tried scanning the code on the bulb, smartthings said NOPE, that is not to add the device to smartthings. Then tried doing the device add nearby scan… NOPE. Then went into add device>partner>Sengled>light… NOPE!

Tried the hub reset trick, holding down the reset and powering on until the light comes on… hub booted up and then same things… will not allow adding.

Is samsung trying to kill smartthings?

Thanks for posting this. You just saved me some money and more importantly frustration

I was really hoping it was going to work. But it did the same exact thing that the Cree bulbs were doing.

That’s odd they’re not working for you. I have 15 of them and I just moved 7 of them to a second hub. While resetting the bulbs were a PITA, they joined right up to the new hub right away. I also added 6 of these to my parents hub without any problems.

I was really hoping they were going to work. I tried two of them out of the 4 pack, same result. For some reason my hub does not want to add zigbee lights. Not sure why.

I am curious, since scanning the QR code on the Sengled lights wouldn’t work. What are the steps you are using to add a new bulb to the hub? Are you just taping on + and then scan nearby devices?

Yup, that’s exactly what I do for any device I add. I find that way more reliable than using any QR code.
