Nest is more of a surveillance camera than security camera. Most of us can’t afford the inconvenience (wired) and cost (minimum $300/year for five camera system).
I view a security camera as a motion detector on steroids. Motion detectors WILL have false alarms. Security cameras allow you to investigate the cause of the alarm, false or not.
Plenty of roads to Dublin. Still new to ST so will continue to mull this over & do research. Full ST app integration is not necessarily the end goal. I do love some of the SmartTiles integration folks are doing.
Well, not directly, as ST doesn’t include modes on their IFTTT channel, but…Yes, I do synchronize both my security system and Arlo and ST via ST physical switches. IF ST switch X turns on, THEN change Abode and Arlo to Y mode. I am using life 360 IFTTT to disarm all 3 systems. It has been working smooth for me. I have a dedicated switch for Arm (Stay) and Arm (Away). Virtual switches can be used but they were less reliable for me, so I am using actual z-wave switches.
can you tell me more about your setup Bobby? I’m trying to figure out a good physical arming/disarming solution for SHM/SmartAlarm (Basically I’m trying to get a usable alarm solution going)
Little background. I have been using IFTTT for 8 months now to arm/disarm my security system, and for the most part it has worked reliabily, more so on my alarm side than st. First I was using virtual switches and they failed me, so I looked at my system and picked two switches that are less likely to be accidentally turned on. So when Good Bye routine fires, the ‘good bye’ switch turns on. IFTTT recipe runs when ‘good bye’ switch turns on and arms Arlo. Same thing for good night. As for disarming, I use 3 life 360 recipes to disarm Arlo, ST, Abode, when we come back and the Good night switch off for the morning routine.
If you are looking into mode synchronization and motion triggers, you should really give IFTTT a try. Is really not that complicated. You just need to log into both Arlo and ST from IFTTT, to authorize, and then creating recipes is pretty easy…
LOL and you lost me at IFTTTT log in. I have no idea what that is. Recipes I can make I just made a killer roasted Sriracha Almond snack.
Once you log in and set up the recipes can you then control the Arlo from the Smartthings app and will the Arlo who in the smartthings Things at that time?
Not directly. Think of IFTTT as the man in the middle. It tells Arlo what to do when ST does something and vice-versa. I have mine set up to arm Arlo when ST good night routine runs ( via a physical switch that turns on in ST) and likewise, I have a ST light switch turn on when motion is detected on Arlo. Call it poor man’s HA integration. There is a community app that taps into Arlo API if you want mode synchronization.
My replacement Arlo cam arrived, since the previous one tinted everything to pink (wrote about it above). It looks new, not refurbished. Synced in seconds, and back to work.
