Couple of sites have done an in-depth analysis of the prime day sales for 2015 and 2016. What they found was the selection was much more limited than the Black Friday sales and there was a lot of weird stuff on sale that most people weren’t very interested in. But of the big items that were on sale, like a few televisions, a few Xbox Models, A few small kitchen appliances, A few personal care items like shavers, the prime day prices were mostly equal to or better than Black Friday.
So you didn’t get that sense that there was a lot of great stuff on a lot of great sales, but if you happen to see something that you like, the special day price probably was a bargain.

Also remember that last year Walmart, target, and Best Buy already all ran some sales to compete with Amazon, so it’s worth checking them as well. Again, limited number of items, but decent prices.
