Aeotec Smart Home Hub .vs ET-WB520 are they both considered .V3 hubs?
Some articles say the ET-WB520 is a v3 some say its not fully able to do things the .V3 systems can do, for example thread.
I’m wondering if I introduce a new Aeotec Hub, how will it work with the three ET-WB520 I have?
What is the latest version and will there be a new version this fall that I should wait for?
No. The Aeotec Smart Home Hub is a rebranding of the ‘V3’ hub. The V3 hub, aka the ‘2018’, gets referred to by a number of catalogue numbers and SKUs, of which the IM6001-V3P is one of the more common. The Aeotec is the latest, and current, version of what might be considered the classic range of hubs.
The ET-WV520 Samsung Connect Home, the ET-WV530 Samsung Connect Home Pro, and the ET-WV525 SmartThings WiFi are not commonly referred to as V3 hubs, except on eBay by sellers desperately trying to offload them, especially if they are the Vodafone variants. I’ve lost track of where they have got to with Matter as what they have in theory doesn’t seem to match the practice too well.
The Samsung SmartThings Station is a Samsung wireless charger with a built-in hub, so no more a classic hub than a Samsung tele or fridge with a hub in it. However it is the closest we’ve had to a new one in the last six years. Well I say ‘we’. Not a sniff of one in the UK yet.
The Aeotec, and the real V3, do indeed work with Matter over Thread and act as Thread Border Routers. The original design included a dedicated Thread chip but that never made it to production. However the Zigbee chip was capable of being used for both Zigbee and Thread and that is where we are today.
The same is largely true of the current Samsung kit. They are mainly interested in Thread to support Matter but because they are still using the dual stack chips Zigbee is along for the ride for the moment.
It will not network directly with them. It will just be another hub on your account, although likely a more up to date one, as the Aeotec tends to get firmware upgrades more often than any of the Wi-Fi mesh models.
The same is true for the newest hub model, the SmartThings Station, although the station does not have a Z wave radio, so it only works for Zigbee or Matter devices.
There have been no official announcements of if/when a newer model of anything hub related is going to be released.
I do have a number of Zwave devices and feel like the old Samsung Connect Home is not stable anymore. If I get a Aeotec hub, is there a way to transfer the Zwave devices over, or will I need to disassociate each of the and re-add the, (please say no)
You may want too ask SmartThings that question. While there is a Hub Replace tool available… their requirements were 50.x firmware or higher. You should meet that. They also said “supported” hubs but never mentioned what those were. I am uncertain if the Samsung Home Connect is a supported hub or at least I don’t remember seeing any posts about it. We do know the v2/v3/aeotec and the Station but no z-wave.

Hi, @John_Goering!
I asked the engineering team and they mentioned that you could replace the whole hub but not move specific devices from one to another.
He mentioned he wanted to move devices from a Samsung Connect Home to a V3 hub, right? That’s the case I presented to the engineering team but let’s see what the user says and I’ll double-check.
