2D/3D Dashboard

I think a few people have succeeded at this task:

These are hacks (which are impressive, appreciated, and certainly count as “proof-of-concept”).

These require manual manipulation of the placement of Tiles by modifying the source of cryptic CSS. This is not a feasible way to package this design option as a product.

Hey, I agree with you, this is so far from being a product, but I’m not suggesting Tiles should incorporate it, I think your product is great as it is. I’m just showing that it is possible to achieve anything you want after some tweaking and that flexibility is a good thing about Tiles.

I think a compromise would be allowing for approximation. Most people would be happy with a graphical représentation if their floor plan versus a scaled replica. I’m no coder but with basic shapes and transformation tools (scale, rotate) I’m sure anyone could create their basic floor plans. I’d pay to have Alex’s perfect dashboard, but would be happy with a good enough one… I simply hate the ST ui

eeek!! Part of me hurts from bringing this old thread back alive, but I think this topic deserves to be kept at the top. It’s a project I think many of us hope someday someone has the funds, skills and time to complete.

In the meantime, there’s a couple of apps we can use. The hardest part about this is the floor plan, at least to start with. Because everyone’s floor plan is unique and different. I think doing a 2D floor plan won’t be that big of a hassel, so long as you have the front-end java/code in place, it should be no more difficult than overlaying the code on top of the floor plan and using the floorplan as the image background. It get immensely more complex though when you’re trying to do 3D.

However, if you can somehow make a ‘3D floorplan’ image, then again the same princple should apply. Just overlay the frontend code on top of the image and use the image as the background for the page/area.

I think there’s a mobile app you can use to make a fairly decent floor plan, let me find it.

Trying giving this guy a whirl: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=pl.planmieszkania.android&hl=en_US

The single most difficult and time consuming part of this project, which I believe @tgauchat and I have discussed about in the past, is the application itself. It’s extremely complex and time consuming. It would certainly work best on a platform already in place to support it, like actiontiles, but I just don’t think there’s nearly enough demand for a project of this magnitude as of yet.

Is there any chance we can start setting up bounties for specific projects on github or something? I’m sure other projects around here could benefit from that as well. Some people would definitely pay to have projects done, it’s just that they’re never really given that kind of opportunity.

We (ActionTiles) have the skills and infrastructure, but not the funds or time.

I seriously wonder if there will ever be enough demand.

  1. SmartThings has millions of customers, and yet none of them have even convinced Samsung to build a basic customizable UI like ActionTiles, nor has there been any hint of them thinking about floor plan layout.

  2. There are dozens of home control UI “portal” Apps out there now, some of them with significant funding. We know of one which got ~$300,000 via 3 or 4 accelerators. None of these Apps offer anything similar to a Floorplan.

  3. This Topic has existed in the SmartThings Community (and in SmartTiles and ActionTiles threads) for years. It never goes beyond a few posts.

If a serious investor wants to fund this, please approach me. We’re talking at least $100,000. In other words, if someone who has money really believes in this idea, then they can ante up. The bet may payoff.

It always blows my mind how much app development costs. I’m in the wrong Damn profession lmfao.

This is crazy to me. When I was setting up a HomeSeer system in my old home a decade ago, using far less advanced technology, it was pretty easy for me to whip up a pretty basic image of a floor plan (which I made with MSPaint), add controls on top of that using the application they provided, and bam, it would populate to our smartphone app, and we would bring it up and see an image of the floor plan where we could just tap all the lights etc. It worked great. On far older software. I’m amazed we don’t have anything like this yet on ST. It really was a much more intuitive way to control everything.

Few years late but YES!!! I will now scroll down to see what happened with this thread.

I too would very much appreciate a “floor plan” view of the home.

Home automation UI is important, and I am planning to use HomeKit a the UI with Smartthing as the automation and Alexa as the voice control. You would want something that is part of your home to look nice and be easy to use.

Today, most UI dashboards offer a what seems to be an arbitrary layout of icon and tiles that bear little resemblance to the actual physical objective they refer to. As the ecosystem consolidate towards Apple, Amazon and Google, there will additional refinement on the UI dashboard. However, I don’t see any of them offering a customized floor plan view as it would require too much effort from the user’s perspective to setup.

I see a floor plan view similar as to the transition from text based computing to GUI, but the key here is to allow the creation / configuration of it easy enough such that it is accessible by a large segment of the population.

How much are you willing to pay for it?

$100 including outdoor plan option

Great! It’s good to see a potential customer willing to recognize the value of this and the effort it takes to build and maintain.

Now how do we find another 999 of you?

it was a day when IBM said “it’s no market for PC” and let MS develop Windows.
and it was another day when IBM developed OS/2…
You can never know…

I cannot disagree with that assertion. Business is all about taking calculated risks.

The issue here is that we (ActionTiles) are not IBM in the 80’s. We don’t have $$ billion in capital. Not even $$ million - by far.

I was referring to Bill Gates.
And I agree with you, such development and support cost money and many people willing to pay

Yup.

Notice that this Topic was started in January 2015. In over 4 years there are only 56 posts. (Total only 22 users…).

Compare that to the thousands of posts on SmartTiles and ActionTiles Topics.

About $100 dollars to have the ability to easily create / edit my own plan in a way that is visually pleasing and functional. Probably another $25 or so a year for the maintenance.

Hi,

I am developing the Hyperborg home automation system. I would like to pick this style for the default look. I alread have a 2D floor planner that might be used as a 3D generator for this approach.

So, I can do the programming, but I would need your help for the UI.

So, can we make it happen?
