Zwave hose timer?

Don’t laugh. :scream: Fire safety is really important when setting up home automation systems. It’s not just your house that’s in danger – – it’s your neighbors’ as well.

Sure Danno, that would be great if you could send me the info.

Calm down JD  I’m a fire fighter and know about fire safety… laughter is just a sign to show light mood in a wiring scenario I know nothing about

I do have the Iris Irrigation system which from my understanding isn’t available on ST at this time

Also, did you just use a standard 24v valve? If you got it working, I’d like to mirror your setup as closely as possible until I get it working… then I can play with it a little

[image: veg manifold1.jpg][image: veg ps1.jpg]Yes. Standard 24V valve. I
also wanted to be able to initiate a water cycle if i was in the yard with
no phone so I rigged up a manifold.

Is there somewhere you recommend to get the adapter from? A local store you went to perhaps? I’m guessing you just cut the end off the adapter and wired it direct to the valve?

Yep. Wired it to the valve.
I just did a search on amazon for the PS that i used.

https://www.amazon.com/UpBright-Adapter-Stancor-STA-4124-Charger/dp/B00IB7BT9K/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1481143008&sr=8-1&keywords=stancor+sta-4124

Just remember that the output of the PS is AC not DC
24VAC @ 300 mA.
The 300 mA was right for the valve that I got. I called the valve mfg and
asked for the mA range that i could use and the 300 mA fit. I don’t
remember the range though.

I really like the simplicity of your design, Danno. I don’t know much about those types of sprinkler valves though. How do they work? I assume that the electrical signal triggers a solenoid to hold open a valve and that it stays open until electricity is cut off…and then it springs closed??? I would like to use a motion sensor to trigger the valve to open and stay open for 60 seconds. I have the idea to create a kind of sprinkler scarecrow to keep varmints out of the vegetable garden.

Hi Matt,
Thanks for the kudos. Your assumption on the operation of the solenoid is spot on.
I think that the motion sensor/scarecrow concept is excellent. I , however do not possess the knowledge to achieve this. You may be able to find some sort of timer already made for a simiklar application. Alternately, i would think that an Arduino board could be programmed for this purpose although i have no expertise with Arduino. I believe that there is a healthy online forum for arduino experimentation that you could utilize. There is another simple processor board like Arduino as well but i cannot recall its name.
Good luckj
Danny

So this is really interesting! Instead of using a zwave module, could you hook up a smart sprinkler controller like a Rain Machine and have it open and close the valve?

I’m not familiar with that product but there are a couple of sprinkler
control ers that will work with smartthings. I didn’t go that route bc
those controllers are expensive and I only needed to control one valve.

I already have a Rain Machine only using 3 out of 8 channels. I guess I was curious if the transformer is needed if connected to a controller? Does the controller provide the electrical needed?

Not sure understand how you want to control the valve.
Are you looking to control for example zones 1,2,3 with the rain machine controller for lawn irrigation as well as using say, zone 4 for veg garden irrigation on a routine that would differ from that of Z1-3?

Yes. Its pretty easy actually. The problem was figuring out how to connect a hose bib on the house to the sprinkler controller. I figured it out. Basically hooking up a inline sprinkler control valve with an adapter and running new irrigation wire to the controller. I did a test run hooking directly to a hose and it worked great. I hope to complete it in the next few weeks.

Hi there. Did you manage to get this to work? I’m doing the exactly same thing but I’m planing to tie it to Sonoff Wifi LV safe switch which once powered (up to 24V) can pass the current to the valve, which sounds like a dream in this case. We’ll see if it works. I got the valve already so now I’m just waiting for the switch.

Yeah, it works great. I just got it set up for it’s sophomore season.
I wonder if I can get the app to let me set the module up as a timed operation.

Thanks for the info on the valve and power supply. I’ve been looking for info on triggering a sprinkler on demand using an electronic valve and I think this will do it, I just need to get the parts. I have it put together in my head but we’ll see how it comes out in reality

There was a wireless multi-zone water timer from Orbit on sale yesterday. It works directly with Alexa but not ST yet.
