Z-Wave door sensor shows up as "Z-Wave sensor" and is Active or Inactive vs Open/Closed

I bought a Z-Wave door sensor, can get the model after don’t have it handy. I bought 3 of them, and with 2 of them they added to smart things as a door sensor, and shows DOOR OPEN or DOOR CLOSED. I excluded before including them. However on one of them, it just says Z-Wave Sensor, and has ACTIVE or INACTIVE. If the door is closed it goes to INACTIVE and open is ACTIVE. How can I fix this so that it reports as a proper door sensor like the other 2? They are all the exact same brand/model, not sure why the one is different. Thanks!

We need to know exactly which brand and model it is. This isn’t an uncommon issue, but the fix depends on the exact device.

No problem, it’s: Vision Z-Wave PLUS Recessed Door and Window Sensor ZD2105
purchased here https://www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B01JNOCQL4/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o06_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Thanks!

@TheSmartestHouse sells those, they may know what’s the best device type handler to use with it.

2 of them work fine though it’s just the 3rd one I added that doesn’t. I think I might return them anyway as they are iffy quality. Thanks!

Yeah, unfortunately there have been a number of reviews indicating that a fairly high percentage of that particular model seems to be defective on arrival. Sometimes things are cheap for a reason.

You can easily change the device type if the sensor was not recognized correctly (it sometimes happens with SmartThings regardless of the product’s firmware version):

  1. Log in to https://graph.api.smartthings.com/ (or to https://graph-na02-useast1.api.smartthings.com/ if you don’t see your devices using the first link) with the same login and password you use for your ST app

  2. Click on My Devices in the top menu

  3. Click on the Vision sensor which shows up as a generic sensor

  4. Scroll down to the bottom and click on the Edit button

  5. Go to Type and select Z-Wave Plus Door Window Sensor from the drop-down menu

  6. Click the Update button on the bottom of the page

Let us know what type of quality issues you experienced with the sensor and we’ll be happy to address them however we can and pass the feedback on to the manufacturer: https://www.thesmartesthouse.com/pages/contact-us

The plastic case can be tricky to handle and you have to be extra careful (we agree that it’s not an ideal solution) but the same goes for the Aeotec recessed sensor - we actually received a greater ratio of broken units from Aeotec than Vision in the past. As for @JDRoberts comment on pricing, it may be true for some industries but with Z-Wave, what we found both as an etailer and brand owner, pricing depends more on a company’s business strategy than the actual product quality. Aeotec has been primarily focused on branding in the past couple of years while Vision is a straightforward manufacturer who makes products for other highly popular brands (which then sell them at triple the cost). Most of the components for all Z-Wave devices come from the same places anyway and all Z-Wave Plus products need to be certified by Z-Wave Alliance before they come to market.
We definitely agree that there are a lot of improvements to be made for almost ALL of the Z-Wave products. This technology is so young and has developed so quickly that we still have a lot of catching up to do in terms of user experience, manufacturing, support, etc. That’s why your feedback is so important!

I changed it to Z-Wave Plus Door/Window Sensor to match the others, but it’s reversed, says open when it closed and vice versa lol, who knows.
