Will SmartThings be upgrading to Zigbee 3.0?

Does anybody know if SmartThings are planning on upgrading to Zigbee 3.0 in the near future?

If so are there any thoughts on timelines?

Yes, this is on our roadmap, but I wouldn’t say that it’s right around the corner. I haven’t seen many ZigBee 3.0 devices yet, though I do see some already certified on the ZigBee site.

Thanks for the feedback Tyler.

Not right around the corner…is that corner a year or two away or more likely months?

I don’t have the knowledge necessary to provide an accurate timeline, sorry. I wouldn’t expect to see it this year.

@Tyler, would it require a new hub or can the existing hubs get a software update for the new standard ?

thanks

Hypothetically speaking this is an update to our existing V2 hub. I’m not familiar with anything that would require new hardware.

Hi, Is there any news on that?

I see Stelpro is about to release dimmers/switches that have zigbee 3 profile.

So: is there a more precise timeline for ST to support Zigbee 3?
Are zigbee 3 devices backward compatible with Zigbee 2 hubs?

thanks

There was no zigbee 2, instead the previous generation of zigbee was a whole set of disparate profiles. Most of Those, but not all, then were being combined together into zigbee 3.0

Older zigbee coordinators don’t work with most Zigbee three devices unless the zigbee 3.0 Device manufacturer has specifically included a fallback to an older profile.

Zigbee 3.0 is backwards compatible, which means the older devices will work with a new 3.0 coordinator… But not the other way around.

Phillips hue has said that they hope to update their bridge in 2018 to support zigbee 3.0 devices, or at least some of them.

But no timeline has been given for SmartThings.

We are currently testing zigbee 3.0 internally. I don’t have any timelines on when it will be officially released at this point.

I’m curious if Smartthings Hub v1 would ever be compatible with Zigbee 3.0 devices. And also curious if there is a timeline update for Zigbee 3.0 for the v2 hub.
