I’m a long-time SmartThings user. When we bought an additional house, I planned to use ST for the security and automation. I purchased and installed an ST “station,” which the Samsung documentation refers to as a “hub” (as well as a wireless phone charger).
I had no problem connecting an ST camera and two Arlo cameras. But (as I’ve covered in a prior post) the Aeotec “Works with SmartThings” multipurpose sensor wouldn’t connect. The message was “A hub is required.”
So, which devices does the ST Station actually support?
More … I opened the ST App on my phone and explored “Add Device” options. I got “hub” required for any door sensor and for outlets. I’m wondering now if Samsung is inaccurately referring to the Station as a “Hub”.
The Samsung ST Station does indeed act as a SmartThings hub. It will support all the devices in the ‘supported devices’ list that say they need a hub except those requiring Z-Wave. Just to be clear the ‘supported devices’ list is just a catalogue and you can’t install devices using it. You have to use one of the ‘Add’ or ‘Scan’ buttons on the ‘Add devices’ page to do the installation. I mention that because it has caused confusion before.
You say you have installed the ST Station into SmartThings, so it should be appearing as a hub device in the mobile app. So there shouldn’t be any doubt it is a hub.
Thanks for the quick response. As I reported my attempt add the Aeotec Multipurpose sensor failed with the message “This device requires a Hub.” I was about 10 feet from the Station. I’ve successfully connected one Samsung camera and linked to two Arlo cameras.
I’m running the latest version of the Samsung App on my Samsung S24 Ultra.
I have a Samsung “Hub” and devices in each of two of our houses, and they all work fine. I tested the Aeotec sensor on one of these hubs and it installed and worked fine.
The Station is in a third house.
When I run the ST App, I see all three systems.
However, when I select either of the two houses with hubs, I see a “Hub” as a device. However, when I select the new location, I do not see the Station as a device.
Now … I may have found the problem. The Station was listed as a “Secondary Hub” under one of the other location’s devices. (This may have been because I initially tested the Station under that location, or it may have been picked up automatically because the new location is across the street from that existing location.)
So … I’m not currently in the same city as the Station. I’ve removed the Station from the Device list of the existing location with the Hub. When I get back to the site, I’ll see if I can add the Station as a device to the new location and then try to add the Aeotec multisensor.
The hub groups info in the app rather implies that if you add a hub to a Location with a single hub you will end up with a hub group whether you like it or not, so given how easy it is to assign a hub to the wrong Location perhaps I should have seen that coming.
Except that this morning I did add a hub to a single hub Location and no such thing happened. I had to create the hub group myself.
I did a complete “restart” and connected the Mult-P Sensor to the SmartThings Station just fine.
Although there were some frustrating issues and incomplete documentation, I was also after several (re-Flashing of the board) able to connect the latest Konnected Alarm Panel Pro to the hub and have (so far) been able to connect a wired open/close sensor to appear as a device under the SmartThings Station.
