I have multiple Smartthings hubs for testing / dev purposes.
My Samsung Smartthings Station shows up as two discrete devices. One each with device type “HUB” and “MQTT”.
This implies native MQTT support - I’m guessing as a client only, but I see no place to give it broker / topic information.
-
Does anyone know if this is meant for public use, or is it just something for Samsung to use internally?
-
If the former, is it there merely to communicate, via MQTT, on the status of the Station device only, or could it be used to send the status of (and perhaps even receive commands to) all devices attached to the Station hub?
I (and my new bestie, Claude 3.7) have searched far and wide and have yet to find out how to use the Smartthings Station → MQTT device in any meaningful way.
Any advice/input would be greatly appreciated!
Many thanks in advance.
There’s nothing within the SmartThings platform as provided by Samsung that supports MQTT that I know of.
There have been multiple community projects that create MQTT integrations, but they all depend on having a separate server device to act as the MQTT broker.
Here’s the most popular one, I believe, but there are others as well.
Integration Solutions using MQTT
As far as what you’re seeing, not sure what’s going on there. Can you post a screenshot?
Tagging @orangebucket just in case he knows of anything.
Thank you for the quick response, @JDRoberts. In looking at the device details, it looks like it’s mostly offering MQTT for the Station Device itself (button single press, double press, long press, firmware status, etc.).
I have also seen the reference to MQTT in the AWA for the ST Station. I don’t know what it means.

Don’t forget the Station is a Hub Everywhere device just like a TV, monitor, soundbar or fridge. It can be thought if as a combined wireless charger and button with a few other knobs and whistles that also acts as SmartThings hub. It would appear that the non-hub smart features of the Station itself are implemented as a direct connected MQTT device.
Does the button work when the internet is down? It looks like it may well not.

Thanks @orangebucket,
That does make sense and along the lines of what I was suspecting. I’m surprised (in a positive way) that Samsung used MQTT instead of a proprietary protocol - there’s hope they they could open things up a bit should a business model suit them.
I’ll confirm in a day or two if the button works without an internet connection.
Thanks.
I’m curious because that is how I understand SmartThings type MQTT
devices to behave.
It would be awfully ironic though.
Routines using the Button on the ST Station are marked as local.
Interesting, but it doesn’t necessarily mean the MQTT functionality is available without the SmartThings cloud.
