V2 Hub and Matter?

If I understand your question, you’re not going to add the Nest hub to your smartthings account. I know this part will seem complicated, but that’s technically a “matter controller,” not a “matter device.“

Instead, if you connect a thread with matter device to the nest hub like an Eve smart plug then you should be able to generate a QR code for that specific device, and then add that specific device to your SmartThings account.

Right now, smartthings does not yet support adding a “matter bridge“ to a smartthings account, that is bringing in a Matter hub and some of its associated devices. Just one thread or Wi-Fi matter capable device at a time.

Automatic linking will only be available if you have a galaxy phone, and I’m not sure if that’s been turned on yet. It may just be a pre-announcement at this point.

At least that’s how it’s supposed to work. @Automated_House may be able to say more about how it actually works right now.

And this was all supposed to make inter-operability easier.

I can live with adding just the one specific device using the Nest Hub thread router, but I’ll be darned if I can find a way for it to generate the QR code. ST also talks about adding a Matter device with a 32 digit code, but also cannot find that.

I realize this is probably a Google/Nest issue rather than a ST issue, but since Google support seems totally confused I was hoping someone here had cracked the puzzle. I’m tempted to try a Station not because I’d otherwise want one, but because it might play better as a thread router than a Google or Alexa device. Or just wait until Matter matures.

This is where I am at personally. I did buy the SwitchBot Hub 2 with matter because I wanted to bring my curtainbots into the Apple Home app, and that worked great. But otherwise, I’m just waiting to see what happens. I have several devices which are supposed to eventually have matter compatibility, but i’m not joining any betas right now.

You are wise, as well as helpful.

Ah yes I see finally, Blink cameras were once nicely integrated without “matter” blabling and then Amazon stepped in.
Thank you Amazon.

Ok, so ingesting all of this, can someone let me know if this specific example would work:

I have:

  • Smartthings hub v2, on the lastest firmware, so it runs matter but does not understand threads
  • a nanoleaf lines wifi device that has a TBR built in, and it is connected to the home router and is controlled by the Smartthings V2 hub

Into this I want to bring a nanoleaf matter strip light.

Once I enable the strip light and get it connected to the home Network, should I be able to control this device from Smartthings?

My first thought is yes, because the chain would be:

  • NL strip light thread connects to the TBR in the NL line.
  • NL line is connected to home router via WiFi
  • ST V2 Hub is connected to the same router via Ethernet
  • ST V2 Hub understands matter and can talk to the NL matter strip via the above chain.

Is that a correct assumption?

It would be, except that nanoleaf ‘s older thread devices don’t support matter and don’t play well with others. :disappointed_relieved:

So I don’t know if the nanoleaf TBR will connect the nanoleaf matter light to smartthings via matter or not.

@Automated_House might know. :thinking:

The matter support was just added to the NL Line (along with thread support) specifically because of the thread support being added to their essential line of products. (That’s why it took so long)

I suspect a lot of it was straightened out.

The NL matter strip is only $50, I’ll get one and let folks know if it worked.

Hi everyone.

Finally got the Nanoleaf strip in (took forever, btw). Just tried it out:

  • set up was simple. Nanoleaf recognized it as a native device. Set it up and updated the firmware
  • I turned on matter compatibility in the NL app
  • my android phone lit up without me doing anything to add the new device to the Google Hub
  • I added it, and GH and GA could immediately see and control it

Not so much love on the SmartThings V2 Hub side. It cannot see the device even though it understands matter.

Gonna try it again by removing it from GH so it doesn’t use that as the TBR, and try it from the Nanoleaf device I have, which should also function as a TBR.

After it’s paired to the first Matter controller, you need to “share” it from their app to other matter controllers. Did yo share it from the Google Home all, hey the one time QR code and PIN code and then add it in SmartThings?
