Use text, not icons

The “Things” screen really needs work. There aren’t enough icons to really make the things make sense. It would just be easier if we could use the name of the device instead of the icon.

Actually, what I would really like to see would be the option to show your things in a list, rather than icons. For me, it’s much easier to scan down a list, than back and forth across icons.

Are there any plans here? If you want us to buy dozens of “Things”, you need to make them easier for us to figure out what is what.

Feature Request: Label on tile "previews" in things view

So, I wanted to bring this issue up again. I think this is something that STs is severly lacking on. Its one of my major pain points, albeit a small one, its the thing that frustrates me the most. In the things view it is impossible, outside of “icons” to discern what data you are view fro the “preview” of the device. Icons are great for lights ut outside of that you cannot change the prview for any other device. This makes it increasingly difficult to manage more than 10-15 devices. I currently have about 100 devices and I want to look at a temp for a device i ahve to clic into a device and if its not the right one I have to back out and try again until trial and error provides me witht he correct data. Updated: Device Name instead of an Icon, here's how I did it

I now have a lot of devices, and putting them in groups does help quickly locate what you’re looking for, especially when a room may have a few sets of similar lights like ceiling cans. My wife really likes to see the name of the device instead of an icon, and shaking the phone kinda wigged her out a bit, so I came up with this process. I’ll say it isn’t as simple as an attribute you can put in “standardTile” in your own device type, but it isn’t too bad considering it works and now my wife is using ST more and more.
