UPDATE: Recent SmartThings User Experience & Platform Performance

For what it’s worth… I also removed the security piece of SHM the day after all the issues surfaced because it failed. I have not had any significant problems since then (well, except for the occasional delays and small failures - but nothing more than before). I am not going to add it back until the issue is fully resolved.

I also have seen a better HA experience since setting up a new hub and leaving SHM out of the mix. I have another home alarm system that does not integrate with ST so I really do not need ST for security and since ST can’t seem to get it working and are vainly focusing their efforts on that in order to gain a revenue source I have no plans to consider them a source for security. I have to completely power cycle my hub about every 2 days to get Smart Lights to work and regain access to zigbee and Z-Wave devices. I have a combination of 84 between the two signals as an ex-Revolv user I am daily wishing Google(NEST) didn’t shelve that product.

If you leave SHM out of it are you still able to use smartalarm?

I’m new here and don’t have any specific insight into the issues with the SmartThings platform.

I know right now that the people on these forums are the most committed and engaged members of the ST community. With the ongoing issues plus little specific communication and missed deadlines from ST, the frustration level has increased dramatically. Given that, it is hard to see a light at the end of the tunnel.

I am hopeful that the ST team understands the gravity of the situation and is doing everything in their capability to address the issues impacting the platform. Once they do (please make it be soon!), they will not regain the trust of this community overnight.

Once we are past this, I am hopeful that this period will be a blip in the rearview mirror and serve as a lesson to ST to execute better long term architectural and operational planning in addition to vastly improving its communication with its core community of enthusiasts. Over time, if they execute on that, it’s pretty likely that they will rebuild a strong & vital community here.

i just outright removed it, as others have said I will rely on my ADT system until such time that these issues are resolved, if that happens before another platform comes and sweeps us all away.

I attempted to use the SHM security features in October 2015. It was a disaster, nothing worked rights. I uninstalled it and things were good.

I have it another try in Feb. 2016. Again a disaster, so I uninstalled it again.

The only part of SHM that I have used consistently from the beginning is the coming and going presence sensors. It works really well using the life360 integration.

I’ve used rule machine for almost 80% of my automations, and some if that is very complex. I use a couple of other smart apps as well. Smart lighting has only 21 scenarios, RM is at 62, and the others make up around another 10 or so.

The only time I’ve had major issues was when I was using SHM security features. Even through this melt down my system has really been stable and reliable (as reliable as ST can be).

Overall I’ve been very satisfied with my setup, and honestly, if you are having problems with your system. And you are using SHM, I can’t recommend enough to uninstall that feature until it’s actually properly fixed.

I am very certain that your HA experience will be better without it as it is.

I’m fed up with support! Everything WAS working just fine for a few days. I didn’t touch my rules or app. But it’s Rule Machine that’s broke? Come’on!!! It’s only my time based rules that aren’t working. The new scheduler not what it was cracked up to be? My rules show being fired at the correct time in the IDE but none of the actions happen. I have other RM rules based on motion etc where the actions are running just fine.

Hi Jon,

Thanks for reaching out!

Like you said, I do see the actions are running on my at the specified times but the devices aren’t doing as they should. Since you’re using Rule Machine, it’s going to be hard to determine where the breakdown is.

From what I gather, you’re using Rule Machine to limit the amount of SmartApps you have running? Everything I see so far can be replicated in Smart Lights albeit it between two Smart Lights automations rather than one. Is that correct?
If so, could you try recreating these in Smart Lights and let me know if they run properly then?

Are the devices themselves working properly?

Kind regards,

I’m new and my system is small and simple but I haven’t had any issues with smart lighting other than a couple times when they failed to turn on or shut off. I only have z wave switches at this point and only use SHM to monitor a water leak/temp sensor I have next to my oil boiler but I haven’t had to cycle the hub at all.

Well obviously this whole thing has gone on way longer than it should. I mean, this is getting beyond ridiculous. I’ve been loosely following this thread since the beginning. I always come back to this question:

Why is this even an issue? At least with Smart Things Hub v2, shouldn’t SHM be running most of its functionality on the hub itself? I mean, why would they release a new hub with the ability to run apps locally, and then leave arguably one of the most important apps susceptible to the cloud? At a maximum, SHM should use the cloud for phone sensors and notifications and that is it. I can’t even fathom why all of the rules/actions need to be cloud-based (other than for older v1 users).

Finally, what is Samsung planning to do for its customers on this? This is beyond a little blip in service. This is going on a month now. Everyone should be getting some sort of compensation for this. Perhaps coupons for some free ST devices (actually, that might be more hilarious than anything) or a rebate.

For anything to run locally it needs to be baked into the firmware.

Parts of SHM Do run locally, as long as you are using an official DTH(that’s supported to run locally) the child apps should run locally. I believe the issues it’s having have to do with Loss of State variable which ST is working on.

I wouldn’t hold your breath… This isn’t going to happen.

I wouldn’t expect any compensation. Frankly, there’s not much they can offer. The only part of my ST investment that’s currently broken is the $100 hub. What are they gonna do… give me a free hub? I already have one. I don’t want a free multi sensor. I want a working hub.

There was another massive service disruption back in October 2014. (That also happened to be the month that I purchased my hub… bad timing, I guess). Fire, anger, pitchforks… the whole thing. We didn’t get any compensation. Here’s the thread if you want to look:

I want a free multi-sensor, already had a few die that needed RMA, would be nice to have a spare. And I think we’ve put up with enough BS to warrant it!

Yeah yeah I don’t expect anything, but I still have SOME hope for this platform.

is your hub rebooting randomly and repeatedly still? Mine is too, but seems to reduced to once per day, and only occasionally multiple times in a row.

Yes, last time I checked. I does reboot randomly, several times a day. Not a clue why.

I don’t use SHM. It actually got uninstalled by accident and I haven’t gotten around to reinstalling it. (The most recent version of the iOS app broke voice navigation so I actually can’t use it at all. I have to have someone else do it.)

I just wanted to mention that the problems are not in anyway restricted to either SHM or complicated set ups.

I have two simple rules. One uses a routine and one uses smart lighting. Both are official features. Both break at least once a week. Both have been reported to support, and I’ve been told there are known problems that will be fixed in the future.

Here’s one from last night. This is a smart lighting automation. No custom code. All it does is turn one light on at a particular time. That command gets issued to the device correctly, but then it repeats as many as 30 or 40 times. There are a couple of issues with this. First, it’s obviously flooding my network which can cause other commands to get missed. Second, if you try to turn the light off while this is happening, even if you do it just with the mobile app, the light will turn itself back on.

Again, no custom code, nothing complicated.

From last night:

@JDRoberts
I’ve got random activities that do the same thing. It doesn’t seem to matter if I turn a light on via the app, echo, or an automation. And it doesn’t occur every time.

… At least I do feel a bit better knowing that it’s not just me!

C’mon folks, we gotta get this ironed out. SMH started acting somewhat normally, but now we’re getting erratic behavior from our smart switches/outlets. The biggest one, the switch for our bedroom light.

My wife has been amazing putting up with the odd behaviors so far, but having the system ignore my requests to turn on the bedroom overhead light, and then perform the action an hour later after we’ve fallen asleep and woken us up is no good. Then, I got up, and turned it off with the z-wave switch on the wall, only to have it come back on a few minutes later, ON IT’S OWN.

SmartThings folks, you’re not inspiring confidence in making the shift from smart home monitoring to smart home automation. Your app is taking a lot of heat in the google play reviews from this shaky and erratic performance.

I want you to be good. You have so much potential to be good. I’m pretty sure you’ve burned through the faith balance you had with many of your die hard followers, and I’m sure they (the techies that the normies go to) have trouble recommending ST when the normies say “hey! I’m hearing about this smart home stuff, how should I get into it?”.

We struggle enough with getting it to work, I would never subject my parents to this until i felt it had the reliability of an appliance, and the ease of use.

You’re killing me guys.

funny my switches etc are great but my SHM started flaking out today. Has gone off 3 times so far

Is that instance running locally. And, just out of curiosity, have you tried removing the offset?
