Time based events failing?

I was looking at one of my events that should have fired off today but didn’t. It worked yesterday but it executed at 4:46:59 just a hair before the actual due time 4:47:00. What’s weird is since it executed before the schedule, it looks like it got left behind and now it’s waiting for a day that’s already passed.

Serveral weeks since Good Night worked.
I’m going to use Tasker to issue a Good Night routine.
No response on my ticket in weeks.

Mine worked well for a couple of days after Christmas, now we’re back to working sometime, sometimes not. The application (Android) is almost unusable, keeps giving me “Sorry, an unexpected error occurred” every 2 or 3 screens, mostly when trying to access the notification screen.

Support seems totally overwhelmed, I’m doing followup every one or two weeks and keep getting the same answer for month now “Developper are looking into this”. I definitely wouldn’t want to work in the consumer service department for SmartThings these day.

My HA project has been on hold for something like 6 month now… now I’m looking at OpenHab instead.

It’s funny because my events were failing for about 3-4 days straight. For the past two days everything is working fairly well, not perfect, but much better. I think they are just switching resources around on the back-end so they allow some users to work some of the time. This way we stick around because it appears that all hope is not lost.

Hmmm, interesting. I already use Tasker for other things maybe I’ll try it for the time based stuff and run it on one of my old smartphones.

I’m already using Tasker for my presence sensing. I use SSID Near to determine when I’m home and when I’m leaving. It has been working pretty well. I am in a GPS limited area so that’s basically my best option.

I don’t know why I bother posting this, since nothing at ST ever seems to get fixed, but I’ve had two time-based events that simply did not bother to execute this morning.

OK, ST, you’ve now got three times as many time-based events from me, to increase the odds that one of them might actually work. If you’ve got capacity issues, they just got a little worse, because of your piss-poor reliability.

Nothing like random-result software. ST% really is a POS. I’m starting to think that I’ll use IFTTT for any time-based activity. It may be delayed at times, but at least their scripts actually run.

I know how you feel… I’ve had 47 failed scheduled events in the past 7 days!!!

Let me know if the multi-scheduling of tasks works for you as I also thought to do this. And my thoughts regards the extra stress on their system is the same as you!

I’m about to start building my own system using Arduino and a web/server app to replace the totally unreliable SmartThings… happy to have others join the project as well.

Is there any app besides Polster or WatchDog that can restart failed timed events? I switched over to WatchDog thinking it would be able to restart it’s own failed timer using a trigger from another device but somehow it isn’t working and I am now getting on average to failed time events a day.

I have a very simple setup with routines that are supposed to trigger simply based on time of day and nothing else. No custom device types, all fully supported/certified devices included in the routines and I’ve had nothing but inconsistent issues and have had multiple tickets in with support, one of which is still open and has been for months now. I’m going to give rule machine a shot today and see if I can ditch all of my smart lighting and routines to convert everything over. I’m really hoping this works. If not, my last resort is to use my Logitech Harmony hub to program routines so the timing of these events actually works and is reliable but I haven’t started down that path yet.

Sharptools/Tasker can poll and/or refresh the same devices that Pollster can. You can set it to poll or refresh based on an event or specific time. Sharptools/Tasker can also can also flip virtual switches to trigger rule machine (to trigger routines).

My problem is I am trying to poll SmartWeather Station Tile v2 and polester doesn’t see the device. That is why I switched over to WatchDog because it was able to see that device. WatchDog was working well for several months but it too has fallen to the failed timed event. Supposedly WatchDog is able to check it’s own timer by using a device as a trigger but that part of the app doesn’t seem to work, or I don’t know how to set it up correctly. This bug in the Scheduled Jobs Handler is really terrible and for as important as it is, I doubt they will ever fix it. After all, hasn’t the problem been going on for almost a year now?

I am also using the SmartWeather Station Tile v2 and use Sharptools/Tasker to refresh. I have it set to refresh every hour but the time is easily customizable. You can see the updates occuring under “Recently” in the SmartWeather Station Tile app.

I was having a problem with SharpTools crashing when setting a widget for SmartWeather Station v2.

I found that the the place to select the command to send which is grayed out. What I just figured out is if I tap the three vertical dots in the upper right of the screen I had to tic Show System Commands. After I did that the Command to send was properly filled with “poll” and now it works.

Thank you. I and going to switch over to using Tasker. It is sad that it has to be done that way but ya gotta do what ya gotta do.

I was just about to give you directions. Glad you found it. It is sad that we have to use workarounds. But it least the system allows workarounds. Trying to stay positive today.

Btw Sharptools/Tasker is great for polling devices but conserving battery. For my front door lock (which is slow to update) I set it up to refresh 30 seconds after the door has been closed. No need to refresh constantly.

Would you mind reaching out to me via Send Feedback within the SharpTools app or by PM? If the app was actually crashing, I’d love a report of how to reproduce it so I can fix it.

—edit—
I would warn that there is currently an OAuth issue impacting a number of integrations including SharpTools, IFTTT, Initial State, Alexa, etc. Hopefully it’s short-lived and gets fixed quickly.

I sent a crash report a few hours ago and gave details on what I was trying to do. I believe it crashed when I tried to create the A-Thing widget and applying it without having the “Select the command to send” set.
When I select the device “SmartWeather Station Tile v2” by default it doesn’t populate the “Select the command to send”

What I had to do was use the 3 vertical drop down in the top right of the app and manually select “Show System Commands” Once I did that the “Select the command to send” was automatically populated with “poll”

Anyway, look for the crash report I sent a few hours ago. If you can’t find it let me know and I will force it to crash again and send another report.

I have been using Tasker for a number of years and one of the best apps out there. I just activated my SmartTools plugin trial and it seems to be working great. I am very happy about that. Thanks

FYI: I just pushed SharpTools 2.0 R3 to Google Play which resolves the crash you submitted (and works around an issue SmartThings introduced for authorizing third party SmartApps)! The update should become available to you over the next few hours. Thanks again for sending the crash report.

Edit: It looks like there are still some lingering platform issues. From what I can tell, SharpTools can control all NON-LOCAL devices. If a device is manually moved to the cloud, you will regain control of it.

Edit 2: The platform issues seem to be resolved and everything should be working as expected now.

Well as long as I can try to get some reliability out of the system by either offloading the scheduling portion of the routines to my Logitech Harmony and use something like Rule Machine to manage my triggers and rules… I might be able to skate on this one for now. I have a rough plan thanks to all of the advice I’ve picked up on these boards but I haven’t had time yet to re-write the whole thing to get out of smart lighting and routines. I need some time to sit down, map it out, and tweak it to see if I can get it all to work the way I think it will first and not while the wife is around getting frustrated with the system too.
