I hope it really is something significant. Clearly local automations/rules are imminent but although welcome that only becomes a game changer when more device integrations run local and are also updated for popular sensors, and also when more of the Rules API is exposed to make it possible to actually write something worth running. It doesn’t really fit the big and new billing.
To actually fit the big and new billing it would have to be the new hub connected devices and I’m out of the loop on progress with those. I’m hoping for a massive change in approach with those.
Sadly it looks like the UI follows the fad of having tabs at the bottom of the screen instead of at the top. Are the UI designers in league with scooter phone thieves or something? Some of us cradle our phones like we are holding er … phones. We don’t hold them by the bottom half an inch.
So, it could be that the ‘big new’ feature is related to this new SmartThings GUI skin notice, but this notice does not appear on my iPad so the SmartThings app for iPhone/iPad users might not receive this ‘big new’ GUI skin. However, it could just be a delayed notice for iOS.
I checked both the Google Play & Samsung Galaxy app stores, but no new app is being offered to me as of yet. (tick-tock)
I have to chuckle that they still can’t decide what terminology to use for scenes and automations. I don’t think routines has ever been used in the SmartThings landscape.
