Smartthings Hardware being licensed to Aeotec?

I wish someone would edit the title on this thread.

I have never liked the wording with the current one

The last paragraph seems to contradict the European Market earlier statement…

Our partnership builds upon Aeotec’s world-class experience and commitment to quality in manufacturing smart home devices. We are pleased to collaborate with a company that customers trust and excited to continue bringing SmartThings into every home around the world.

Must say - I am not feeling the ā€˜Zigbee Love’ from Aeotec…

I actually see it the other way around: I’d guess this is Aeotecā€˜s path to adding Zigbee to their line. It wouldn’t surprise me if they have desire, just not experience.

Time will tell…

Said certification doesn’t seem to be listed any more. Perhaps they decided to start off with a cock up to make us feel at home.

I really hope this is the case. I have 98% Zigbee in my house. I prefer it and am too invested to switch now. I’d like to see a brand like this offer both solutions.

I came to smartthings in the first place because I wanted to combine zigbee sensors with Z wave fixed position devices like door locks and wall switches. Zwave doesn’t have to worry about WiFi interference, but zigbee still has better power management and a higher number of hops, which can help with getting signal around tricky obstacles. :sunglasses:

(I actually very recently was finally able to add zigbee contact sensors to my HomeKit set up via Aqara, which made me very happy.)

Aeotec make very expensive sensors and only z wave.

The smartthings motion sensor, button and multi sensors were the best sensors I found for those jobs and also at a reasonable price.

Lotta familiar faces there. With a new coat of paint…

and some unreleased faces

And a hefty price tag…

Being in the US, prices in Euros don’t immediately register with me.

What’s the price premium compared to past Samsung versions?

The Aeotec hub is 20% over the current cost of a SmartThings branded V3 hub on Amazon UK or at Argos (Amazon and Argos price is £80 which is about $105).

Difficult to say with the other devices as availability has always been erratic with the prices all over the place and generally nowhere near as cheap as US prices. However …

Converted to UKP, the Aeotec button is about £21 which compares favourably to £40 for the ST button from Currys (once THE source of Smartthings in the UK) and about £35 on Amazon UK from third parties.

The Aeotec Motion and Multipurpose Sensors are about £30, which is 20% up on the ST brands in Argos where they are £25.

Obviously I am comparing UK prices with a German online shop.

Actually this makes me think, who was actually producing the Hub before. Was it from the beginning Aeotec?

Can you explain this? What do you mean? Which camera integrates well with ST?

But where you can buy them?

If/when Aeotec does actually upgrade the 2018-era V3 hub, I’d love to see the new Z-Wave Long Range spec included, too.

Z-Wave’s branding is slowly morphing into USB: the x00-series chips, Z-Wave Plus, Z-Wave Plus V2, Z-Wave Long Range, etc. Ideally, they’ll wrap up LR + 700 into a ā€œ800ā€ or a ā€œ900ā€ chip soon.

For now, Long Range is being included in Z-Wave Plus V2, even though previous Z-Wave Plus V2 devices won’t have it.

ā€œLRā€ (long range) Is different because it extends the number of allowed device IDs so that you can have thousands on one network. They said this is specifically because of the dramatic increase in sensors that many smart homes now have. But in order to make that work, even though they say it’s backwards compatible, it’s going to be tricky so that the addresses are recognizable for the routing.

Vesternet has a good explanation of the various currently available device terms:

And they are still using marketing terms as well as engineering terms.

So ā€œZ wave plusā€œ is the same as ā€œseries 500ā€œ and ā€œZ wave plus V2ā€ is the same as ā€œseries 700.ā€œ

LR is just a specification for now and will be indeed part of Z wave plus V2.

The new Z-Wave-LR specification will be managed and certified under the Z-Wave Plus V2 certification program. This currently requires the inclusion of the S2 security framework as well as SmartStart, a Z-Wave technology that enables simple setup and installation of Z-Wave devices by scanning a QR code.

Z wave alliance has said that there are currently three manufacturers in the alpha phase of testing LR, but they haven’t been named yet.

Sorry everyone, I had to change the title of this post because the old one was driving me crazy. Feel free to edit it to something better if you want
