Why does the new SmartThings app take up 7x the amount of storage space compared to the Classic app?
Keep in mind that the classic app only controlled the hub and hub connected devices. The new app does that, as well as many other non-hub related things (TVs, appliances, etc). The new app was a consolidation by samsung of a bunch of other individual apps.
AKA “bloat”.
I tried to google for the huge size of the Smartthings app. Just to find this old chain.
Am I the only one paying attention to the insane size of the Smartthings app on iphone? I unfortunately have a phone with just 64 GB memory and I’m constantly running out of space. Smartthings is eating 1 GB of it (5th largest app, after photos, messaging, emails, which all are way more understandable).
I’m using the app for just 4 AC units. This function should fit to mere megabytes. And I would not want to delete it as remote control for ACs is very comfortable.
What can we do?
Please don’t tell me “it’s controlling TV’s and all”, this size is not justified at all.
Just to add another size datapoint, on iOS 17.6.1 on an iPhone XS the app size is 1.22GB.
The download is 774.6MB as reported by the app store.
Currently have 74 devices and 2 hubs.
Probably lots of unused static content coupled with code for features that don’t typically apply - like the TV remote functionality for me.
It is a bit of a lump on Android too. I notice it because I’ve been playing with the API a lot over the last few years and I frequently pull down just about everything I know how to get with a PAT bar the history. If I save it as JSON its only a few Mb worth.
I get the impression that a lot of the functionality in the app has been migrated to plugins and there was probably a period when the app had both the old and new code. I do note that although you often to wait for a download when first using new functionality there doesn’t seem to be an elegant way to remove it if you don’t need it.
I forgot all about this until I received an email alert that someone replied. I’ve moved to Home Assistant and very happy compared to the issues I used to have to deal with using SmartThings. In case anyone is wondering, the Home Assistant app is way smaller.
That’s because the HA app is basically a web browser.

You’re correct. But at least the “server” is something I can control and not a bloated app reliant on Samsung’s cloud.
