Hi! I’m trying to improve the energy management of my apartment, which is connected to central heating, and I’m looking for a TRV that is fully compatible with SmartThings. Unfortunately, I can’t find anything that doesn’t require at least a non-original controller.
Ideally, I’d prefer something that can read the temperature from the Aeotec sensors I already have.
I uses to go pretty well with Shelly TRV, but they ended the SmartThings support
I almost got rid of my Tapo/Kasa KE100s, was looking into Tado X, Aqara, Eve Energy, until the KE100s suddenly got Matter support.
They use a property protocol (868 MHz) to communicate to the Tapo H100 hub, that also acts as a Matter bridge.
I love that they can use the Tapo T300/T315 sensor as an external temperature sensor. They can also be connected to a window open/close sensor.
So it’s the best of both worlds: Matter and native/proprietary binding with external sensors.
Until we have native Matter binding support, this is the best solution in my opinion.
If I ever had to replace my devices, I’d probably go for Eve Systems Thermo, since they have an Android app now, that supports Matter binding for their own products.
This is how the scheduling looks like in the Tapo app:
Four months after I set it all up, the TRVs disappeared out of the sudden from the Tapo app and the Odyssey started. It took four weeks of email ping-pong to get them back.
The first two days I had to convince them that they have a product named KE100 in their portfolio. I had to send links to their own website. The next two days I had to send screenshots from the app as a proof that the devices were gone.
Another week or two were spent on convincing them that I had them in the Tapo app and not in the Kasa app with screenshots from the app and another screenshot from the change log in the Play Store:
Tapo App 12.34.5
Added support for the KE100
They escalated the case to Shenzhen or wherever the poor soul works who was responsible for adding it in the Tapo app.
Turned out that all they had to do was to flip a field in the database entry of my account that probably looks like this:
user_really_wants_ke100_in_tapo_app = true
I finally had my thermostats back in the Tapo app just in time before it got hot outside…
They sent an apology and some random piece of hardware with it.
Two months later, the same thing happened again. Contacted support and almost ordered Tado or Eve Thermo, but this time it only took two weeks and it was summer anyway. Got another random piece of hardware as an apology.
Later that year they added Matter support and you can imagine how much that meant to me.
I guess, what I’m trying to say is that if it doesn’t work, I can provide you with the necessary screenshots and text snippets you need for the inevitable support request.
Wow, long story Andreas. And thanks, I’ll take you up on your offer to help if I need it.
I’ll report back when the KE100 arrives towards the end of next week.
Ok, the H100 hub was up and running for a couple of months. I just set up the KE100 but in the Tapo app ‘Add Device’ menu I do not see the option to install it. The app has two sections, one for Tapo devices and one for Kasa, but there are no thermostatic valves in either.
About a year ago, the idea was to merge the Kasa brand into Tapo, but I think that they gave up halfway through.
As I said before: I can add every Kasa device directly to the Tapo app and never had the Kasa app installed. I have five KH100 collecting dust that I have never plugged in.
I would contact support and tell them to do the necessary changes to your account, because the Tapo app is superior, in my opinion.
Meanwhile you can set it all up and just use it through Matter.
All of them. Started with US, then UK and then DE. There’s no script. You have to improvise, depending on what day of the week it is. I had to sprinkle in some swear words here and there. Especially when they were asking for the same screenshots over and over.
Typical human interaction, I’d say.
Use my screenshots if they want proof that it really works with the Tapo H100 and the Tapo app.
In the meantime: get a Kasa KH100 and maybe read this whole thread again.
The goal after all is to have your TRVs connected to the ST hub via Matter.
