Contacted U.K. support via live chat and after a rocky start they have agreed to replace the 12A one. They did offer to replace all 3, but I declined as I don’t think the 13A ones are likely to develop a problem. If they do we will take it from there. They said they don’t think any are faulty, but due to my concerns about fire safety they would offer replacements. It was reassuring that they did not think that the plastic used could actually flame, just smoulder if overloaded.
They have since had the USA ticket forwarded with the details I gave them.
So to summarise, unless you have a problem with your socket overheating or not working, they normally would not exchange either the 12A or 13A models. However if you are not happy with that, then insist that something is done and get a replacement.
So reports of a faulty product recall are exaggerated. There does not seem to be a recall at all.
Have supplied all the details requested by U.K. support, serial number, proof of purchase, etc. But no acknowledgement or details received so that I can proceed with the return of the item for replacement.
Seems to be another total breakdown of communication, after yesterday’s promises.
I don’t expect to hear anything over the weekend of course, but this was on Friday during working hours.
ST support have been in touch today and confirmed all info is OK and sent me label for freepost return of the unit for exchange. Apologised for delay, have been very busy, and I thank them again for their help.
The new SmartThings brand model (zigbee) is now scheduled for wide release on March 24. It will be available from Amazon among other places, and it’s priced very competitively, under £25.
I’ve just got hold of one of the new ones, and it’s exactly like @David_Anderson pictures above - rated 13A, removable fuse. I imagine the first batches went into the starter kits, and now they’ve got enough to start selling them separately again.
I have two more on order. Feels like I’ve been waiting an age for these - I’ve no other sensible way of strengthening my zigbee network, as I’ve not got any suitable lights.
EDIT: So far I’ve seen them in stock from Vodafone (£44.99), Amazon (£22.50) and Very (£30.99). No sign yet at Currys/PC World.
I’d have to dig out my old one to check if this is a new feature, but this one also appears to have a button on both sides, and it’s labelled in the quick start guide as “On-Off / Connect Button” so it looks like you have local control.
Was that on the old socket too? I’ve installed my new one behind a unit so unfortunately can’t test until the other two arrive next week.
I received the replacement yesterday, it is exactly the same as the other 13A ones that I had, and different of course to the 12A one that I chose to ask to be replaced.
Arrived just in time for the EU outage of ST yesterday of course😮
I got a couple from Very last week. I’ve not checked, but I didn’t notice any difference from the one I got at the end of last year. One thing I did notice was stickers over a couple of places in the manual in regards to power ratings/12A/13A. I’ll post a photo tonight.
The newest one is rated at 12A, not 13A, and carries the same warning as @jymbob noted:
Each module outlet is rated to 12A only if the connecting cord is rated to 90 degrees C or higher. If a load greater than 12A is attached, the appliance module will be damaged and will no longer function.
No, you’ve got that backwards. The old one was the 12A one, this is the new one, hence the sticker with 13A in place of the old warning.
Also this new one, like most UK adaptor plugs, contains its own separate fuse, which should serve as an additional protection for anyone trying to draw too much power. This also means there’s a good chance you’ll be able to get it working again afterwards simply by replacing the fuse - not an option with the old sealed unit.
Is it cynical to suggest that the old ones and the new ones are actually the same ones and the reason there was none for sale for a few months is that Samsung’s printers have been working overtime and a small army in Asia have been sticking labels over the old stock?
Perhaps they redirected some processing power to the printers, hence the EU outage these last few days
They’re physically different. The new one has its own fuse, and I expect they’ve addressed the ‘narrow contact’ issue that was reported to be the original design flaw, although I couldn’t confirm that without destroying one, which I’m not willing to do with my own stock!
Of course, if anyone wants to send me over one of each, I’ll happily tear them down and post some pictures
I have four of these and I was about to put two of them on high current devices (dish washer, washing machine) and was wondering if there is anyway of telling from the web site device list (graph…) if they are old or new. Physical access is limited, but I will get to them. Would be nice to be able to just check the device list.
My smart outlets are becoming useless I have five in total
Living Room - Tried plugging in my laptop yesterday charged for a few minutes then stopped
Dinning Room - Normally plug my dyson in to charge have to find the sweet spot
Kitchen - Never has anything plugged in so not sure about that one
Shed - Needs to be on the sweet spot to work, its the one I’m most worried about
Bedroom - Phone charger at night (Piston turns the outlet off at 100% to prevent overcharging) this one works fine
Other than the shed and bedroom the others are mainly just repeaters but there in the only spare sockets in the room so when I need to plug something in thats where it goes, I don’t like unplugging them as it that causes issues with devices nearby
I getting to the point I want them replaced, three are just pointless the other two I would just like replaced for piece of mind.
I just tried support (Live Chat) which was like talking to a brick wall and she ended the chat while I was explaining the issues with each plug. I don’t expect a follow up email.
I really don’t want to replace them out of my own pocket and dont feel I should have to. Currently a five pack on amazon is £119.99. I paid £125.48 over the years for four of them as one came with the starter pack
Two from amazon @ 44.99 & 31.99
Two from ebay @ 24.50 each
