Samsung is going to be selling a mesh router product that is a full fledged SmartThings Hub.
The S8/S8+ will have software that integrates IoT features into the phone. For example, you can pull the notification bar down and actuate a switch right from the Samsung Connect notification panel. This software should also be available as a standalone app. You’ll also be able to control your devices with Bixby.
will the new hub have bluetooth disabled on launch day?
This should shut up all the doomsayers predicting the end of smartthings…
though I highly doubt a migration tool will appear any time soon …
Looks like this is a half baked release. I tried asking a lot of the above questions at the event and no one seems to have a good answer.
The shock was when one Samsung representative asked me in return - "What is SmartThings? " 
So I’m picturing something like how most music players & Harmony app have worked for years. Does this mean we might actually see Androidwear compatible app in the foreseeable future ?
Ridiculous that I can lock/unlock & start my car with a tap of the wrist, but can’t turn on a simple light or reset an ST alarm
On other Samnsung phones? On any Android phone? Across platforms to iOS and/or Windows?
It should be available on Android and iOS, but I don’t have a ton of information about that topic.
The biggest question of course is: will it be sold elsewhere in Europe? So finally full ST support outside of the UK?
And if I now have a v2 hub, would that be compatible with the new Samsung apps?
Another hub? Gees… I’m a technology geek, I would get excited at new device unveilings, but this is ridiculous.
They didn’t even enable the full potential on the Hub v2 (Bluetooth, USB ports, Local Processing etc), and they didn’t even deliver the Samsung TV as a hub as they promised a year ago.
The next thing is Samsung struggling to update firmware on all these different “Hubs”… Just like they struggle to update their phones.
Do “one” thing but do it good. Why try to do the same thing in a hundred different ways?
Just my 2 cents.
This is good for all of us STers. Anything that brings more customers makes ST a more viable business, which in turn means more investment. It’s a win-win for Samsung, even if ST is just a bullet point of differentiation. Remember, almost every home has wifi while relatively few have IoT.
On another note, here’s to hoping we finally get a migration tool!
Your assuming the mesh is for other protocols besides wifi. Does anyone know if the mesh networking for other protocols?
I must admit, I laughed at that more than I should have.
Unfortunately, that is the only way to remain profitable when your selling hardware. I wish they would come out with a subscription model for “premium service” (not that I would pay it…) so that the general public could fund the product.
kinda reminds me of a conversation at CES when a savant rep said ST cant integrate with harmony🙄
