Your app is great. I did submit a ticket to support about headless rules. It really sucks that the platform trashes the best tool that we have to get things done. Without rule machine, I would have so many smart apps trying to accomplish just a portion of what I can now do. Hopefully next week’s fix will cure the headless rules.
Don’t count on that, they are just trying to recover from destroying milliseconds of delay.
I just rebooted my hub, and 52 z-wave devices are not responding.
I noticed this too that my rules are becoming headless. What an awful past few weeks ST is having between the SHM issues and now this. Once again, the communication has been dropping off as well. Although I suppose, a message every day telling us they are working on it without any real concrete information was useless anyway.
I wonder if they are prepping for v3 launch. I haven’t seen any TV sets out on the market yet.
Ouch. At this rate it will be years before this stuff becomes mainstream. I can’t see anyone in my family getting this to work, or even trying to keep it running when it fails every other day. Again, glad it’s a hobby and not a requirement.
I am not sure what a new hub will do if the back end infrastructure is crap anyway. Unless of course a new hub does everything local, which we would all switch to in a second.
No, never came back, you can find a list of them in all the children in the ide, so you can copy and paste at least, however unless you create them in the same order (based in the number in each command), you will have to go into each rule detail and re select the correct one.
These issued have nothing to do with ticker, or the ms mess up, this is all database stuff, probably from changing databases or moving locations around. Interesting that I haven’t lost all state info from other pc apps I have.
I had selected rm in my list of apps, it came back and told me to Install it, like it does on an initial install, I knew at that point state variables weren’t comming back…
A new hub that runs all local. That would be the ticket. Kind of like my Wi-Fi thermostat. Everything is handled and stored locally but can be accessed via the web. I would think rule machine at the heart of this hub for programming would solve so many problems but then again, most of what goes on in the back end is so far above my knowledge I could be “all wet” and only fantasizing about something that in reality wouldn’t be any better.
Hey @bravenel, an i looking at this wrong? I wonder if this could be causing a problem?
Check out the version numbers…
hehe. No, ver is a vestige of the past. Once you have a state variable in an app, it never goes away until you remove the app. So unless you want to remove RM and all Rules, you are going to have ver sitting around in your application state, even though its not in the code anymore. I could update RM to change its value for you, if that would make you feel better.
Notice the blank by ruleState. That went bye-bye also. But, I made the code blank it out. These are like archeological markers for when you installed RM.
Ummmm yeah, I’m not denying RM and reprogramming 74 rules for the fun of it
Here is the response from my support ticket for the zombie rules. Not very promising. I am really losing my faith in smartthings.
Hi Steve,
Thanks for reaching out!
We have seen a few other reports about Rule Machine losing its child SmartApps but we haven’t had reports of any other SmartApps doing this.
I will let my developers know that this is happening but since the only SmartApp this is happening to/is being reported on is Rule Machine, they most likely aren’t going to be able to fix anything.
I will let you know if I find out anything.
Kind regards,

That may be the proverbial straw for me.
It could cost them their entire community base. They very people that have kept the platform alive.

Ummm… This is just a case of a support agent not understanding the implications of the standard answer they are trained to give for non-certifed SmartApps and DTHs.
Of course if non-certifed SmartApp “x” is the only one with reported problem “y”, then most of the time it really a bug in the code that is the responsibility of the Community Developer.
Platform bugs/issues, though, are meant to be routed through the Developer Advocates @jody.albritton, @slagle for escalation.
It is curious that Support has no indications that this is occurring in other SmartApps; but it is a rather difficult behavior to confirm & reproduce… Or is it?
I’m willing to help if you can tell me what info to provide the next time (probably tomorrow) that I have a rule that loses information. It’s Bruce’s creation. He might be best to answer what is occurring and why.
Honestly, it’s just getting tiring moving from one problem to the next with the platform. Just when you think it’s working, bam, another issue and then getting an answer from tech support basically telling me to find another solution. If not for guys like Bruce, most would have abandoned this long ago.

In the IDE/API web pages under Locations / SmartApps, you can click each SmartApp instance and its current details, including State variables and Settings, are shown.
That’s the best way to capture a before & after snapshot.
Along with the Event log and any clues from Live Logging and then @slagle or @jody.albritton (or their designate) can dig for internal traces that might reveal the cause…
Yep, let us know. We’re here to help. Support is really good at what they do, but usually need other resources for this kind of stuff, he will probably escalate to us.
But Jody and I will help as much as we can.
Also, @bravenel since you’re the creator of this app and have the most knowledge about its inner workings, can you PM Jody and I any theories you might have so we’re not chasing dead ends. We can figure this out together
I reported this to you 3 weeks ago, and on a number of occasions you have chimed in about it. The simple fact is that some portion of the Appication State disappears. This started suddenly one day. There is NOTHING about the app that would explain this. This is purely a platform failure. There is some active corruption of your database going on. This is abundantly obvious to people with some technical knowledge.
On that day when this began, you said that the change could not be rolled back. That was the beginning of the current devastation to the reliability of the platform
Tim, you should be the one explaining this to us, not the other way around!
I do not beleive Rule Machine is the only app having this issue, it’s probably the one most affected by it.
I have other apps that go all stupid, and need to be reset so their states are reinstantiated. This isn’t a re schedule problem, I don’t use schedules.
I have suspected state being lost for the last month or so, for most of my apps that depend on it, their next cycle resets it, so it’s hard to pin point.
