Replacement universal remote for my new tv and old amp

I just got a DU9000 and for the first time cannot use my Logitech Harmony system the way I want.

I have a Sony surround amp that cannot pass through 4k and I will not be replacing it. So I just plug my PS5 into the tv directly then fiber out to my amp. It all works great, but I have to use 2 remote controls again.

Right now to get around 2 remotes, most of the time, my harmony hub as well as tv is connected to Alexa and google home but this is a very clunky work around. Google home automates powering the amp when it detects the tv turn on and vice versa. I have to ask Alexa to turn the volume up/down but it is unreliable and not efficient when watching tv. I need something that can power on both amp and tv as well as control volume of the amp. It would be nice if I could control the tv and all apps with that device also.

I was looking at the Switchbot hub since it is in the list of “partner devices”, but I don’t know the capabilities or limitations.

Is this a good solution or are there other better devices that will not cost what the now obsolete harmony hub cost?

you can still connect Harmony hubs to ST. There are two methods;

  1. https://community.smartthings.com/t/edge-device-simple-harmony-bridge-alpha-testing/237389

  2. link to ST from within the Harmony app.

Thanks for that top link! I will check that out. Hopefully that will solve my problem without having to buy even more equipment. If this doesn’t work I may just buy a $30 remote that can learn IR and make sure to point over the chair in front of me (stadium seating in my home theatre room) to turn the amp up and down.

I did try linking ST and harmony hub but when doing it from my harmony app I just got errors and it never linked, even though I logged into both and told it to link, and from the PC it said no compatible devices found. Would I need an actual hub for this? I thought the TV had a built in hub.

yes, I should have asked or mentioned about a hub. If you do not have a ST hub… option 1 would not work as Edge drivers require a hub.

Hopefully other community members can respond if the Harmony to ST integration still works through the cloud?

I got option 1 to work with the TV. I do believe the TV has a built in hub.

Here is my current issue. I added a routine for volume up. When pressed it takes a couple of seconds to send the command. The amp gets the volume up command and displays the current volume and waits for follow up commands to turn the volume up or down. Unfortunately by the time the routine is available to press again the amp has gone back to normal mode and when you hit the volume up routine again it just displays the current volume.

I am still experimenting. If I can get it to trigger the volume up command twice, that would work perfect. I just haven’t figured that part out yet.

So I am much closer than I was before lol. If only the TV remote could control the amp volume via IR, that would be perfect.

Thanks for your help. It has gotten me closer to my goal

Quick update, the web UI on my laptop actually allowed my to press the routine several times back to back which worked. The app however does not. Progress though

Ok I got the volume working. I only cared about volume up/down and I could not get it to learn the commands and it just kept saying “optical” on the tv. I finally read someone else’s comments in another post where they had to keep trying the power on/off test. After selecting my amp 50 times and continuing to try to power off, the amp finally powered off. I still have to lift the remote over the chair in front of me, but I only need one remote now.

Your original solution above fixes my power on/off issue with the ST routines. Thanks for all the help!

I just tried to add SmartThings as a device/service to my Harmony Hub. It acts like it’s going to work, it logs in to my ST’s account, asks me to give permission to read the devices then gives me a message that the setup is complete. The screen gets stuck at this point, then errors out and says I need to reset the app. I’ve only used my Harmony Hub integrated to Google Home, never tried this integration to ST’s. Since Logitech has long since discontinued all of their remotes and hubs, I don’t think this integration works anymore, at least it didn’t for me, I tried it 3 times with the same results.
