This is discussed at length in the various threads about the new app. At the present time, most custom device type handlers will not work with the new app. At all.
So if you are using any custom device type handler, the switch will not communicate with the new app.
This is one reason why people are being told to remain using the old app until support tells them individually they are ready to be moved over to the new one.
