New V4 video
Is that a USB slot in the back? Could it be used for a zwave stick? Did anyone ask aeotec what their business plan was if it didn’t include zwave and they sell a ton of zwave products?
Read the whole thread.
I asked this question to the person demonstrating the product in the video, and I haven’t heard back yet.
I’m more curious about aeotec’s response and how it fits into their business plan.
Yeah, this makes zero business sense, to me, if I were aeotec.
I’m not an expert, but I think you have to click on the blue Post button.
Thanks, I did after the screen shot! ![]()
I mean, I could go straight up to their booth at the IFA and ask them, but that would be too late.
Aeotec does also sell Zigbee devices, although the selection isn’t nearly as diverse as their Z-wave lineup.
No Z-Wave, no sale. I’ll keep my v3 hub and v3 backup hub going as long as I can. But, I’ll be looking to go to some other platform in the near future, probably HA.
If they drop Z-wave support it is really bad. Majority of matter devices (over Thread), I am seeing interference with my wifi 2.4 ghz. If you have a router where you can control the channel on 2.4 ghz band then it might work fine by setting the channel to 1 and then set the channel for zigbee and Thread network to 24 then you are fine. If you have a router (Eero or other similar mesh networks) where you have no control on you wifi channels then you are going to see interference issues.
After seeing those interference issues I feel that it is better to stick on with Z-wave devices unless you are missing some great features and functionality.
You can use them as separate hubs in the same location, I didn’t know that bit the option popped up when adding my older v2 hub to my location (which already had a v3 hub in it). They have separate zigbee and z-wave networks, and automations do not run locally, but my goal was to overcome the device limit on my v3.
I do this in my homes; I always have two options, the TV Hub + HubV3, and also a third option, a Tuya ZM Matter Hub. I avoid creating automations with one device associated with the TV Hub and another with the V3 Hub, so they don’t go to the cloud. Always local.
I fully understand if someone has a ton of legacy Z-Wave devices why you’d be upset,
But the market’s strategy for in wall light switches doesn’t make sense. I have a combination of the GE / Jasco / Ultrapro Z-wave switches through my house and they’re 100% reliable and in 2025 fairly cheap on Amazon.
If Samsung and the universe wishes to use Zigbee/Thread, Ok, why didn’t these companies pivot and make a Zigbee/Thread version ? I understand the Lutron ones are popular but they require their own hub and are expensive, which again is fine, but it makes no sense to me why this category is so limited. Thoughts?
That’s my issue. Most of my switches/wall remotes/scene switches and the like are zwave. The remaining zwave items othjer than those are few and easily swapped to something else. For that set of switches/remotes/etc, there are no other options I have seen that provide the same functionality/flexibility that aren’t zwave.
Yeah it just doesn’t make sense! If you have half a dozen can lights, it’s just not practical to put in smart bulbs. I just checked, the Ultrapro ones I have are $45 2-pack so call it $22.50 for a switch.
I’m working on moving to a new home and have been speculating to what I’d do for this and the idea of buying even 10 of these at this price is fine… but I’d be really fearful to lose support if my V3 hub dies.
Since a new home is a clean slate , even if I use my V3 hub which I would, it would make sense to switch to a protocol support in the future, ex. V4 hub, but those Lutron ones are like $70/piece.
Of course a different hub would work, it’s just disappointing as I’m really a big fan of Smartthings.
I just don’t see why there isn’t a Z-wave over Matter bridge that would solve this problem
