New SmartThings App now completely broken (Outage 14 Jan 2021)

This is all too common after an outage.

Wow, they have really messed things up this time. After noticing the issues and seeing the incident report yesterday afternoon, I shrugged in frustration and then later went to bed assuming it would all be better by morning. I was stunned to wake up this morning and find everything is still completely haywire.

I am now having to relearn how to use a light switch all over again. :grinning:

In Android, I swipe the app away (out of RAM) and re-launch. I never sign out, as I’m aware the app is stupid enough to clear everything I setup (because why bother persisting settings server side, when you can just temporarily save them in volatile storage space and #@$#@ with your user base? :face_with_symbols_over_mouth:).

Edit: Hub went offline about 5 mins ago and has not returned online.

Edit 2: After about 15 mins, my hub notified that it reconnected. Everything is still #$%#$%.

“Hub Offline” for me…

Things are not working here either. Doors say open when they’re closed. Power sucking pool pump ran all night instead of the few hours my automation was set for. Ugh

i didnt do anything this morning other then clear the cache on the phone and restart it

Woke up and Smart Lighting automation are not working. It shows toggled “off” in my apps list and I can’t turn it on, I get the “something went wrong, try again later” message. The phone app (other than Smart Lighting) seems to be working okay, I can at least control my devices through that, but my scenes don’t seem to be working. I can’t create or update any of my few automations I still have in the ST App. So now, none of my automations are working, none of my scenes are working. I’ve spent hundreds of hours working on my system to get it just as I want and BAM, like Emeril Lagasse, it’s gone without a trace.

I’ve mentioned this in a number of other threads in the forum but this is exactly the reason why it is against safety code in many US jurisdictions to automate an open fireplace in any way at a distance further than you can see. No remote operations are allowed. Even if you don’t intend to be 4 miles away and turn on your fireplace, the fact that you can is against safety code for just this reason.

The exception is units which are categorized as in wall furnaces and have their own thermostats and safety mechanisms. And which normally are sealed With glass in the front.

I personally don’t automate anything that I would feel unsafe running for 24 hours unattended. But that’s just me.

If you want to automate a fireplace, I recommend using a Bluetooth switch connected to your phone so that you can turn it on and off or even use an automation while you are in the room, but it won’t work if you are not. again, unless you have one of the sealed units which counts as an inwall furnace.

oh yes, if something happens, it would be your own fault, not that of a smart switch.

Things were great last night and early this morning. Now things are hosed again. Lights say off when they are on if I turn on a light nothing happens on the App but the light goes on. Hue shows it correctly but the app doesn’t.

Looks as if this is cascading across the entire ecosystem… Europe is now being effected with same issues according to status.smartthings. Coming close to 24 hours since this mess started…seriously, what is going on?

JD- I’m with you on the safety part, but a default for restoration of a device shouldn’t be ‘ON’. I’m more concerned with energy than safety with this specific failure. If motion(s) are ‘ACTIVE’ and it sets a thermostat as if I’m home, or open doors triggers lights- it cuts in to efficiency. I threw the fireplace in for added agony! Nevertheless, your point is well taken.

This is trash…I have roughly 30 devices on my V3 hub, and after having all of my devices, automations and smart apps quit working then totally disappear I decided to go for the nuclear option and totally start over from scratch. I finally got it working after 6 to 8 hours of tinkering ad re-pairing devices It seemed to be working ok. Woke up this morning and my automations and smart apps quit running, devices are showing the incorrect states. I’m at a loss here, and so heavily invested in the ST ecosystem I don’t even want to think about going to something else. I exclusively use ST automations and smart apps to control my indoor garden of high value plants, and even temporary interruptions in environmental controls and lighting schedules can destroy a crop very quickly. I have been a ST user since 2017, and cannot recall ever having these issues with my old V1 hub and app.

Something similar has happened twice before that I recall, that is, an outage of more than about 10 hours, but I don’t remember if those affected the V1 hub or not.

Is one symptom being that the hub keeps reporting as being online?

Online, offline, yeah. Could definitely do that. Also loss of device control, missed automations, etc.

Personally, I wouldn’t try to do anything with it until ST sends the All-clear.

Okay, my app seems to be working again. Got a sensor stuck in motion detected but other than that it might be back to working. I said that last night too…

It says the hub status is ‘connected’ on the mobile app, and the state on ST IDE is ‘functional’
